Does Time Really Slow Down during a Frightening Event?

Observers commonly report that time seems to have moved in slow motion during a life-threatening event. It is unknown whether this is a function of increased time resolution during the event, or instead an illusion of remembering an emotionally salient event. Using a hand-held device to measure speed of visual perception, participants experienced free fall for 31 m before landing safely in a net. We found no evidence of increased temporal resolution, in apparent conflict with the fact that participants retrospectively estimated their own fall to last 36% longer than others' falls. The duration dilation during a frightening event, and the lack of concomitant increase in temporal resolution, indicate that subjective time is not a single entity that speeds or slows, but instead is composed of separable subcomponents. Our findings suggest that time-slowing is a function of recollection, not perception: 1a richer encoding of memory may cause a salient event to appear, retrospectively, as though it lasted longer

FIESTA: An operational decision aid for space network fault isolation

The Fault Tolerance Expert System for Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Applications (FIESTA) is a fault detection and fault diagnosis expert system being developed as a decision aid to support operations in the Network Control Center (NCC) for NASA's Space Network. The operational objectives which influenced FIESTA development are presented and an overview of the architecture used to achieve these goals are provided. The approach to the knowledge engineering effort and the methodology employed are also presented and illustrated with examples drawn from the FIESTA domain

La fiesta: utopía, historia y derecho a la vida

Este trabajo quiere ser una aproximación a una reflexión historiológica acerca de la fiesta. ¿Cómo introducir el tema de la fiesta como un sentido de la Historia? El mundo intelectual y material de Occidente, sobre todo a partir de sus determinaciones burguesas, lleva a una negación del tema. La historicidad occidental se autoconcibe desde las lógicas de la conquista, explotación y racionalización del mundo. Estas lógicas culminan con el derecho a la muerte de la Tierra. FIESTA 2: parallelizeable multiloop numerical calculations

The program FIESTA has been completely rewritten. Now it can be used not only as a tool to evaluate Feynman integrals numerically, but also to expand Feynman integrals automatically in limits of momenta and masses with the use of sector decompositions and Mellin-Barnes representations. Other important improvements to the code are complete parallelization (even to multiple computers), high-precision arithmetics (allowing to calculate integrals which were undoable before), new integrators and Speer sectors as a strategy, the possibility to evaluate more general parametric integrals.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure

Retrospectiva histórica de la fiesta aniversario de la ciudad de Bogotá: 1930 – 1960

Es mediante la aproximación al tema festivo como contenido teórico y como expresión de las diversas manifestaciones socio-culturales, que la fiesta se constituye en problema de investigación cuyo abordaje debe considerar la complejidad e interacción, tanto de ambientes físicos, como de imaginarios sociales. El análisis de la fiesta tradicional del 6 de agosto, día de Bogotá o fiesta del aniversario de la ciudad, nos permite reconstruir la historia de las expresiones festivas de los habitantes de Bogotá. Como fiesta de la ciudad y de los bogotanos, nos anima a preguntarnos: ¿Cuales han sido sus ritmos, cambios, rupturas y mutaciones? ¿Quienes la convocan? Y ¿Cuales son los espacios de la ciudad en los que se escenifica la fiesta
