Conferência realizada em Monterrey, México de 6 -13 de julho de 2008.Mathematical activity has flourished all over the world. Such activity is organized either in formal systems of knowledge, or embedded in daily life, emerging in work, educational, leisure practices, professions, norms and artifacts. Several fields of study have contributed to uncovering the human diversity of mathematical ideas and practices, including the history of mathematics, psychology, theology, anthropology and ethnomathematics. Addressing the question, “What is ethnomathematics (how is it related to mathematics, anthropology and the politics of mathematics education?)” posed by Discussion Group18 - the role of ethnomathematics in mathematics education, this paper focuses on the relationship between anthropology and ethnomathematics, explored from the view point of their connection to the field of mathematics education.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Finding a Way Out of the Ethnographic Paradigm Jungle

    Get PDF
In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop a hybrid ethnographic paradigm, taking the best points from the different approaches of ethnographic research. The pioneering proponents of ethnography differed in their conceptualization of the method, resulting in the development of three distinct schools of thought-holistic, semiotic and behavioristic. These three ethnographic paradigms have their respective benefits and shortcomings. Following any one of these approaches may lead to only partial comprehension of the phenomenon by the ethnographer. This study wished to address this issue by developing a best practice approach, which will have the virtues of all the three paradigms. It is hoped that this evolved paradigm will help in making the work of the ethnographer a lot more comprehensive and the experience much richer

Deaf epistemologies as a critique and alternative to the practice of science: an anthropological perspective

    Get PDF
IN THE LAST DECADE, and responding to the criticism of orientalism, anthropology has engaged in a self-critical practice, working toward a postcolonial perspective on science and an epistemological stance of partial and situated knowledge (Pinxten, 2006; Pinxten & Note, 2005). In deaf studies, anthropological and sociological studies employing qualitative and ethnographic methods have introduced a paradigm shift. Concepts of deaf culture and deaf identity have been employed as political tools, contributing to the emancipation process of deaf people. However, recent anthropological studies in diverse local contexts indicate the cultural construction of these notions. From this viewpoint, deaf studies faces a challenge to reflect on the notions of culture, emancipation, and education from a nonexclusive, noncolonial perspective. Deaf studies research in a global context needs to deal with cultural and linguistic diversity in human beings and academia. This calls for epistemological reflection and new research methods

Etnociência: um olhar sobre os saberes tradicionais da pesca artesanal

    Get PDF
