Review of UK microgeneration. Part 1 : policy and behavioural aspects

    Get PDF
A critical review of the literature relating to government policy and behavioural aspects relevant to the uptake and application of microgeneration in the UK is presented. Given the current policy context aspiring to zero-carbon new homes by 2016 and a variety of minimum standards and financial policy instruments supporting microgeneration in existing dwellings, it appears that this class of technologies could make a significant contribution to UK energy supply and low-carbon buildings in the future. Indeed, achievement of a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 80% (the UK government's 2050 target) for the residential sector may entail substantial deployment of microgeneration. Realisation of the large potential market for microgeneration relies on a variety of inter-related factors such as microeconomics, behavioural aspects, the structure of supporting policy instruments and well-informed technology development. This article explores these issues in terms of current and proposed policy instruments in the UK. Behavioural aspects associated with both initial uptake of the technology and after purchase are also considered

Structural health monitoring for wind turbine foundations

    Get PDF
The construction of onshore wind turbines has rapidly been increasing as the UK attempts to meet its renewable energy targets. As the UK’s future energy depends more on wind farms, safety and security are critical to the success of this renewable energy source. Structural integrity of the tower and its components is a critical element of this security of supply. With the stochastic nature of the load regime a bespoke low cost structural health monitoring system is required to monitor integrity of the concrete foundation supporting the tower. This paper presents an assessment of ‘embedded can’ style foundation failure modes in large onshore wind turbines and proposes a novel condition based monitoring solution to aid in early warning of failure. The most common failure modes are discussed and a low-cost remote monitoring system is presented

UK innovation support for energy demand reduction

    Get PDF
While significant reductions in energy demand can be achieved by deploying existing technologies and management approaches, innovation can unlock further opportunities in the longer term. Research, development and demonstration plays a key role in enabling the development of innovative products and services. Energy efficiency has traditionally accounted for a low proportion of UK public sector energy research and development spend, although funders are now placing an increasing emphasis on the demand side. This paper addresses two questions – what are the priority themes for demand-side research and how should research be conducted and supported in order to maximise the quality of its outputs? It draws on a series of expert workshops organised by the Research Councils UK Energy Strategy Fellowship during the development of its UK energy research and training needs prospectus. The following priority themes for UK energy demand research are identified: system-level and socio-technical perspectives on energy demand; energy use in non-domestic buildings; examination of how large-scale and incremental technological innovations could reduce energy demand. To develop these themes there is a need for interdisciplinary research, field trials, arrangements for data collection and sharing, and raising funding support to levels comparable to those for energy supply technologies. </jats:p

Celebrity Endorsement Kuku Bima Ener-G (Studi Deskriptif Kuantitatif Persepsi Konsumen Terhadap Celebrity Endorsement Kuku Bima Ener-G Pada Karyawan Pabrik Ambassador Garmindo)

Parsimonious numerical modelling of deep geothermal reservoirs

    Get PDF
Numerical modelling has been undertaken to help improve understanding of a deep geothermal system being considered for development in the vicinity of Eastgate (Weardale, County Durham, UK). A parsimonious numerical modelling approach is used, which allows the possibility to develop a workable formal framework, rigorously testing evolving concepts against data as they become available. The approach used and results presented in this study are valuable as a contribution to a wider understanding of deep geothermal systems. This modelling approach is novel in that it utilises the mass transport code MT3DMS as a surrogate representation for heat transport in mid-enthalpy geothermal systems. A three-dimensional heat transport model was built, based on a relatively simple conceptual model. Results of simulation runs of a geothermal production scenario have positive implications for a working geothermal system at Eastgate. The Eastgate Geothermal Field has significant exploitation potential for combined heat and power purposes; it is anticipated that this site could support several tens of megawatts of heat production for direct use and many megawatts of electrical power using a binary power plant
