    Neighborhood detection and rule selection from cellular automata patterns

    Using genetic algorithms (GAs) to search for cellular automation (CA) rules from spatio-temporal patterns produced in CA evolution is usually complicated and time-consuming when both, the neighborhood structure and the local rule are searched simultaneously. The complexity of this problem motivates the development of a new search which separates the neighborhood detection from the GA search. In the paper, the neighborhood is determined by independently selecting terms from a large term set on the basis of the contribution each term makes to the next state of the cell to be updated. The GA search is then started with a considerably smaller set of candidate rules pre-defined by the detected neighhorhood. This approach is tested over a large set of one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) CA rules. Simulation results illustrate the efficiency of the new algorith

    As developing countries including Malaysia, are now moving towards sustainable development is in line with the Ninth Malaysia Plan, 9th MP, the development should be built to meet current and future needs for achieving sustainability of economic development, social and environmental responsibility for the prosperity without compromising the future generations‘ needs. Over the past five years, there has been a move away from constructing new buildings to refurbishing older and historic ones. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to review and evaluate the approach for the refurbishment of lighting as well as the existing energy efficiency policy and measures in Malaysian historical building for the energy efficiency improvement in the future. The paper takes the form of a review of literature. The main sources of this literature research are based on the articles, journals, and internet search. This study perhaps can add to the breadth of knowledge of lighting performance in the historical building from the perspective of energy efficiency.     Semantic annotation, publication, and discovery of Java software components: an integrated approach

    Component-based software development has matured into standard practice in software engineering. Among the advantages of reusing software modules are lower costs, faster development, more manageable code, increased productivity, and improved software quality. As the number of available software components has grown, so has the need for effective component search and retrieval. Traditional search approaches, such as keyword matching, have proved ineffective when applied to software components. Applying a semantically- enhanced approach to component classification, publication, and discovery can greatly increase the efficiency of searching and retrieving software components. This has been already applied in the context of Web technologies, and Web services in particular, in the frame of Semantic Web Services research. This paper examines the similarities between software components and Web services and adapts an existing Semantic Web Service publication and discovery solution into a software component annotation and discovery tool which is implemented as an Eclipse plug-in

    Intellectual Property Access Systems

    This paper reviews and compares patent pools and intellectual property clearinghouses as alternative systems for increasing the efficiency of access to intellectual property. These systems improve economic efficiency in downstream research and development by economizing on search and transaction costs faced by potential licensees, and by mitigating externalities among owners of complementary intellectual property that lead to excessively high license fees. We compare the administrative and economic features of different systems, review some successful examples, and suggest directions for future economic research.

    A multi-objective genetic algorithm for the design of pressure swing adsorption

    Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is a cyclic separation process, more advantageous over other separation options for middle scale processes. Automated tools for the design of PSA processes would be beneficial for the development of the technology, but their development is a difficult task due to the complexity of the simulation of PSA cycles and the computational effort needed to detect the performance at cyclic steady state. We present a preliminary investigation of the performance of a custom multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) for the optimisation of a fast cycle PSA operation, the separation of air for N2 production. The simulation requires a detailed diffusion model, which involves coupled nonlinear partial differential and algebraic equations (PDAEs). The efficiency of MOGA to handle this complex problem has been assessed by comparison with direct search methods. An analysis of the effect of MOGA parameters on the performance is also presented

    ON-THE-JOB SEARCH, URBAN INFORMAL SECTOR AND THE DEVELOPMENT POLICIES-A GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM ANALYSIS

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the Fields (1989) proposition1 in a multi sector general equilibrium model with perfect and imperfect capital mobility2. The effects of different fiscal policies on the equilibrium rate of urban unemployment are also examined here3. The main findings are more efficient on-the-job search from the rural sector raises equilibrium urban unemployment rate whereas increased job search efficiency from the urban informal sector lowers this rate. Again urban subsidy policy lowers the equilibrium urban unemployment rate and rural subsidy policy raises this rate. Urban formal sector enlargement leads to a change in ex-ante and ex-post labour force in the rural sector even if urban informal sector wage rate is constant.
