Innovation through Design Strategy: Case Study of SMEs in Bandung
The rise of business in the city of Bandung has caused the intensity of competition to be very high. Small-scale businesses are very difficult to survive especially facing companies that have larger economies of scale. Innovation can be one way for SMEs to compete. Previous research stated that implementing a design strategy can trigger opportunities to create innovation in the company. This study examines how design is used by Soca companies to produce innovation as a strategy to survive in competition. Soca is an SME in Bandung that produces glasses with wood materials. As a startup, Soca is considered successful in penetrating the market amid intense competition. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive case study approach. Primary data is obtained through document review, in-depth interviews and observations. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for how design strategies are used by SMEs to generate innovation

Pressure equalisation as design strategy for watertightness
Due to rising energy prices and a higher ecological awareness there is a growing attention for energy efficiency and sustainability in building construction. New concepts and techniques for well insulated and airtight buildings require adapted construction methods for weathertightness. This research project aims at developing design guidelines for new building envelope systems concerning weathertightness.
Most building envelope systems rely on pressure moderation to achieve a good weathertightness. By separating the airtightness plane from the water shedding surface a drained cavity can be pressure moderated to limit the amount of water that enters the construction. A better understanding of those phenomena makes way for more rapid evolution in energy efficient and sustainable building envelope design
A novel iterative strategy for protein design
We propose and discuss a novel strategy for protein design. The method is
based on recent theoretical advancements which showed the importance to treat
carefully the conformational free energy of designed sequences. In this work we
show how computational cost can be kept to a minimum by encompassing negative
design features, i.e. isolating a small number of structures that compete
significantly with the target one for being occupied at low temperature. The
method is succesfully tested on minimalist protein models and using a variety
of amino acid interaction potentials.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
A design strategy for autonomous systems
Some solutions to crucial issues regarding the competent performance of an autonomously operating robot are identified; namely, that of handling multiple and variable data sources containing overlapping information and maintaining coherent operation while responding adequately to changes in the environment. Support for the ideas developed for the construction of such behavior are extracted from speculations in the study of cognitive psychology, an understanding of the behavior of controlled mechanisms, and the development of behavior-based robots in a few robot research laboratories. The validity of these ideas is supported by some simple simulation experiments in the field of mobile robot navigation and guidance
A strategy for the design of skyrmion racetrack memories
Magnetic storage based on racetrack memory is very promising for the design
of ultra-dense, low-cost and low-power storage technology. Information can be
coded in a magnetic region between two domain walls or, as predicted recently,
in topological magnetic objects known as skyrmions. Here, we show the
technological advantages and limitations of using Bloch and Neel skyrmions
manipulated by spin current generated within the ferromagnet or via the
spin-Hall effect arising from a non-magnetic heavy metal underlayer. We found
that the Neel skyrmion moved by the spin-Hall effect is a very promising
strategy for technological implementation of the next generation of skyrmion
racetrack memories (zero field, high thermal stability, and ultra-dense
storage). We employed micromagnetics reinforced with an analytical formulation
of skyrmion dynamics that we developed from the Thiele equation. We identified
that the excitation, at high currents, of a breathing mode of the skyrmion
limits the maximal velocity of the memory
Towards Economic Models for MOOC Pricing Strategy Design
MOOCs have brought unprecedented opportunities of making high-quality courses
accessible to everybody. However, from the business point of view, MOOCs are
often challenged for lacking of sustainable business models, and academic
research for marketing strategies of MOOCs is also a blind spot currently. In
this work, we try to formulate the business models and pricing strategies in a
structured and scientific way. Based on both theoretical research and real
marketing data analysis from a MOOC platform, we present the insights of the
pricing strategies for existing MOOC markets. We focus on the pricing
strategies for verified certificates in the B2C markets, and also give ideas of
modeling the course sub-licensing services in B2B markets
India's Development Strategy: Accidents, Design and Replicability
This paper examines India.s development strategy, and to what extent it may be considered a success. It provides a brief history of why and how the strategy was adopted, as well as of its implementation, including the role of initial conditions, such as human capital, geographical location, and infrastructure. It analyses the extent and reasons for success of the strategy, including policy, political economy, timing, and linkage of the strategy to economy-wide development. Particular attention is given to the relative roles of domestic and international actors, including the part played by foreign investment, trade, and other dimensions of openness. The paper considers the extent to which the strategy remains viable for the future, the challenges still faced, and what other strategies might be required. Design-led strategy : how to bring design thinking into the art of strategic management
Design thinking has emerged as an important way for designers to draw on rich customer insights to enhance their products and services. However, design thinking is now also beginning to influence how corporate managers bring customer data into their day-to-day strategic planning. We call this integration of design thinking into the practice of strategic management “Design-Led Strategy” and show how it complements but extends current design-thinking perspectives. Adopting a strategy-as-practice perspective, this article identifies four archetypal practices that managers can use to strategize with design-thinking content. Its findings provide insight into the practices associated with situating design thinking within organizational practice
