AN ANALYSIS OF PETER GRESHAM’S CUNNING IN MAX BRAND’S NOVEL “FIRE BRAIN”

Literature is a vehicle in order to record the most enduring interest of human being such as their experience and thought. It is a kind of art which offers pleasure and illumination. Moreover, the medium of it is a language either oral or written. But not all oral language is literature. One part of literature is novel. The purpose of this study is to find out the answer of questions: 1) What are Peter Gresham’s cunning?, 2) Why does Peter Gresham make use of cunning? and 3) How are Peter Gresham’s ways in making use of his cunning? The suitable method of this study is descriptive because there is no treatment as in as experimental research. While, approach used is objective approach that tries to describe the literary product without necessarily studying the author’s life, the background of the work, or the background of the society. The object of the study is the whole events related to Peter Gresham’s cunning. The events are in the form of sentences paragraphs, and dialogues concerning with the cunning action which is made use by Peter Gresham in Max Brand’s novel “Fire Brain”. The result of this study shows that there are four of Peter Gresham’s cunning. They are: 1) Peter Gresham’s cunning toward citizens, 2) Peter Gresham’s cunning toward Sherbun, 3) Peter Gresham’s cunning toward Doc and 4) Peter Gresham’s cunning toward Jenny. Then, the reason of Peter Gresham made use of cunning toward citizens is to get citizens’ sympathy, the reason of his cunning toward Sherbun is that Sherbun fell in love to Jenny, the reason of his cunning toward Doc is that he did not need him as a spy anymore and the reason of his cunning toward Jenny is that he obsessed her very much. At last, the way of Peter Gresham made use of cunning toward citizens is by acting like a hero, the way of his cunning toward Sherbun is by submitting his money and challenging him in order to catch Red Hawk, the way of his cunning toward Doc is by stucking him when he had played the role as Red Hawk and the way of his cunning toward Jenny is by killing four lovers of her

Kazakhstan has travelled a long and sometimes difficult road in the years since independence in 1991. From being largely isolated from the world outside the Soviet Union, globalization has taken hold at an increasingly fast pace. Today, numerous international flights bring in still larger numbers of visitors -- be they businessmen, tourists or locals returning from studies or work abroad. The internet age is slowly reaching even the most outlying parts of the country, bringing with it new impulses and perspectives to a young population that grew up after the Soviet era.While the ongoing integration of Central Asia into the global scene involves rapid change on many levels, certain areas are still left behind. It is not unusual for the population to be without electricity and gas during severe winter frosts. Bureaucracy too, retains much of its post-Soviet legacy, as do the attitudes of some government officials and key decision-makers. National economic indicators are not always consistent with the reality of those struggling to get by in the cities and villages dotting Central Asia's vast landscape.As the economic leader of the Central Asian region and the country most strongly tuned in to the global diplomatic and business communities, Kazakhstan carries a particular responsibility to respect, and indeed to promote, human rights and democratic principles.However, while working along an ambitious program for planned future achievements both on the domestic and international arena, Kazakhstan has seen several major steps backwards in the area of human rights over the past two years.Following the tragic events in Zhanaozen in December 2011, when at least 16 strikers were shot and killed by government forces, authorities cracked down on selected opposition leaders such as Vladimir Kozlov of the Alga political party, sentencing him to seven-and-a-half years' imprisonment for his alleged involvement in the strikes. Soon after, the offices of Alga were closed down by authorities, followed by charges of extremism against independent and opposition media outlets, many of which were closed down by court order.As a result, Kazakhstan is currently economically strong, but suffering a bleak media scene, a lack of real political pluralism and a widespread disillusionment as to Kazakhstan's commitment to human rights.The following report summarizes some of our current concerns with regards to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion or belief. It also brings the perspective of one of Kazakhstan's most respected writers on current affairs, Sergey Duvanov, in a special article for the 2013 Human Dimensions Implementation Meeting in Warszaw. The life of Metis: cunning maternal interventions

This paper charts the different and co-existent uses of the Greek myth and concept of Metis for feminist philosophy. I show how the move from using the myth of Metis to an engagement with the marginalised ancient Greek concept of cunning intelligence (metis) is significant in addressing problems of agency and political action in contemporary feminist debates. The paper addresses the concept of metis cunning intelligence in relation to the maternal and argues for a theory of metis charcterised by a double action, and finally links this approach to recent ideas in Deleuzian feminist theory

However, I intend to prove that mere pragmatism is not enough to comprehend the drive behind Ceaușescu’s diplomatic efforts in post-colonial Africa; ideological factors need also to be taken into account
