Operation of graphene quantum Hall resistance standard in a cryogen-free table-top system
We demonstrate quantum Hall resistance measurements with metrological
accuracy in a small cryogen-free system operating at a temperature of around
3.8K and magnetic fields below 5T. Operating this system requires little
experimental knowledge or laboratory infrastructure, thereby greatly advancing
the proliferation of primary quantum standards for precision electrical
metrology. This significant advance in technology has come about as a result of

A superfluid helium system for an LST IR experiment
The results are presented of a study program directed toward evaluating the problems associated with cooling an LST instrument to 2 K for a year by using superfluid helium as the cooling means. The results include the parametric analysis of systems using helium only, and systems using helium plus a shield cryogen. A baseline system, using helium only is described. The baseline system is sized for an instrument heat leak of 50 mw. It contains 71 Kg of superfluid helium and has a total, filled weight of 217 Kg. A brief assessment of the technical problems associated with a long life, spaceborne superfluid helium storage system is also made. It is concluded that a one year life, superfluid helium cooling system is feasible, pending experimental verification of a suitable low g vent system

The results of tests and studies to investigate the utilization of solid hydrogen for cooling of spacecraft instruments and sensors are presented. The results are presented in two sections; the first describing the tests in which an existing single stage solid cooler was filled and tested with solid hydrogen and the second which describes the analysis and design of a catalytic converter which will be tested in the vent line of the cooler
A helium-3 refrigerator employing capillary confinement of liquid cryogen
A condensation refrigerator suitable for operation in a zero gravity space environment was constructed. The condensed liquid refrigerant is confined by surface tension inside a porous metal matrix. Helium-4 and helium-3 gases were condensed and held in a copper matrix. Evaporative cooling of confined liquid helium-4 resulted in a temperature of 1.4K. Using a zeolite adsorption pump external to the cryostat, a temperature of 0.6 K was achieved through evaporative cooling of liquid helium-3. The amount of time required for complete evaporation of a controlled mass of liquid helium-4 contained in the copper matrix was measured as a function of the applied background power. For heating powers below 18 mW the measured times are consistent with the normal boiling of the confined volume of liquid refrigerant. At background powers above 18 mW the rapid rise in the temperature of the copper matrix the signature of the absence of confined liquid occurs in a time a factor of two shorter than that expected on the basis of an extrapolation of the low power data
The Spitzer Warm Mission Science Prospects
After exhaustion of its cryogen, the Spitzer Space telescope will still have a fully functioning two-channel mid-IR camera that will have sensitivities better than any other ground or space-based telescopes until the launch of JWST. This document provides a description of the expected capabilities of Spitzer during its warm mission phase, and provides brief descriptions of several possible very large science programs that could be conducted. This information is intended to serve as input to a wide ranging discussion of the warm mission science, leading up to the Warm Mission Workshop in June 2007

Passive retention/expulsion methods for subcritical storage of cryogens: Test plan, subscale dual-screen-liner retention/expulsion system
A test program is described to demonstrate liquid-free gas venting of a subcritically stored cryogen using a passive retention/expulsion system. The test plan is specifically aimed at verifying this capability for the dual-screen-liner concept, independent of gravity level and direction. In addition, the test is designed to yield operational characteristics data for the dual-screen-liner, including: tank filling, frequency and duration of venting, cryogen temperature and pressure histories, sensitivity of pressure relief control, and the ability of the passive device to provide communication between the vapor annulus and bulk regions. Normal l-g aircraft and drop tower tests using nitrogen as the test liquid are discussed
