An evaluation of the effects of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) behavior on the efficacy of crab pots as a tool for estimating population abundance
Crab traps have been used extensively in studies on the population dynamics of blue crabs to provide estimates of catch per unit of effort; however, these estimates have been
determined without adequate consideration of escape rates. We examined the ability of the blue crab (Callinectes
sapidus) to escape crab pots and the possibility that intraspecific crab interactions have an effect on catch
rates. Approximately 85% of crabs that entered a pot escaped, and 83% of crabs escaped from the bait chamber
(kitchen). Blue crabs exhibited few aggressive behavioral interactions in and around the crab pot and were
documented to move freely in and out of the pot. Both the mean number and size of crabs caught were significantly
smaller at deeper depths. Results from this study show that
current estimates of catch per unit of effort may be biased given the high escape rate of blue crabs documented
in this study. The results of this paper provide a mechanistic view of trap efficacy, and reveal crab behavior in and around commercial crab pots
Illegal Russian Crab: An Investigation of Trade Flow

Investment potentials in shellfish culture in Nigeria
Shellfish are a major but cheap protein source for human consumption as well as source of income for coastal towns and villages of the Niger Delta in Rivers State, Cross River, and Lagos States. A research into the nutritive value of some of these marine shellfish viz: bivalves (oyster - Crassostrea gasar and cockle - Anadara senilis); gastropods (periwinkle - Tympanotonus fuscatus, obtuse periwinkle - Semifusus morio and the giant whelk - Thais callifera) and mangrove crabs (green crab - Goniopsis pelli, ghost crab - Cardisoma ormatum, and common blue crab - Callinectes latimanus) was carried out to compare their quality and cost with beef, chicken meat, pork and egg in order to identify those most suitable for commercial culture. Results show that all shellfish had at least 16% crude protein except blue crab (13.38%). All shellfish had higher protein content than egg (13.36%). Cockle with protein content 25.47% compared favourably with beef, (29.60%). Beef, chicken meat and pork cost 11.50, 9.00 and 8.00 per kilo respectively while oyster, periwinkle and the common blue crab cost 3.50, 3.00, and 1.50 per kilo respectively. Searching for gravitational waves from the Crab pulsar - the problem of timing noise
Of the current known pulsars, the Crab pulsar (B0531+21) is one of the most
promising sources of gravitational waves. The relatively large timing noise of
the Crab causes its phase evolution to depart from a simple spin-down model.
This effect needs to be taken in to account when performing time domain
searches for the Crab pulsar in order to avoid severely degrading the search
efficiency. The Jodrell Bank Crab pulsar ephemeris is examined to see if it can
be used for tracking the phase evolution of any gravitational wave signal from
the pulsar, and we present a method of heterodyning the data that takes account
of the phase wander. The possibility of obtaining physical information about
the pulsar from comparisons of the electromagnetically and a gravitationally
observed timing noise is discussed. Finally, additional problems caused by

Dungeness crab research program: Report for the Year 1976
All larval stages of the 1976 year class, with the exception of the 5th zoeal stage, were found in Gu1f waters January through March. The first post-larval stage was collected in San Pablo Bay in May. Fifty percent of 1976 year class crabs entered the Bay complex as compared to nearly 80% in 1975. The 1976 year class appears relatively weak. No electrophoretic polymorphism was found in Cancer magister to be of value in Dungeness crab population determinations.
Multi-variate correlations comparing crab landings with an
array of oceanographic parameters and the crab density dependent factor were computer-run for both northern and
central California. The most significant correlating factors at the time late stage larvae prevail were sea level and atmospheric pressure for central California and, for northern California, the density dependent factor and sea
surface temperature. Female crabs held at controlled temperatures indicated gonad maturation and spawning
may be induced by increased temperature. Analyses of crab
tissues revealed burdens of petroleum hydrocarbons, silver,
selenium, cadmium, and PCB's higher in central California
crabs, while DDE was found in higher amounts in northern
California crab tissue.
Thru-flow culture systems were developed which should yield about 163 megalopae of Dungeness crabs in 63 days from 1,200 laboratory hatched zoeae.(46pp.
