    The Ultimate Control Group

    Get PDF
Empirical research on the organization of firms requires that firms be classified on the basis of their control structures. This should be done in a way that can potentially be made operational. It is easy to identify the ultimate controller of a hierarchical organization, and the literature has largely focused on this case. But many organizational structures mix hierarchy with collective choice procedures such as voting, or use circular structures under which superiors are accountable to their subordinates. I develop some analytic machinery that can be used to map the authority structures of such organizations, and show that under mild restrictions there is a well-defined ultimate control group. The results are consistent with common intuitions about the nature of control in some familiar economic settings.

Pregnancy is a vulnerable condition to all kinds of "stress", resulting in changes of physiological and metabolic functions. This research aims to determine effect of exercise during pregnancy in reducing oxidative demage marked by decrease of malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-diguanosine levels. Randomized pre and posttest control group design was employed in this study. A number of 66 pregnant women were recruited in this study and grouped to two groups, i.e 30 of them as control group and the rest as treatment group. Pregnancy exercise was performed to all 36 pregnant women from 20 weeks gestation on treatment group. The exercise was performed in the morning for about 30 minutes, twice a weeks. On the other hand, daily activities was sugested for control group. Student\u27s t-test was then applied to determine the mean different of treatment and control group with 5 % of significant value. This study reveals that there were significantly higher decrease of (MDA) and 8-OHdG about 0.15 nmol/ml and 0.08 ng/ml, respectively, amongs treatment and control groups (p < 0.05). Clinical outcomes, such as strengten of pelvic muscle and quality of life of treatment group were significantly better compared to control group (p < 0.05). This means that exercise during pregnancy ages of 20 weeks decrease MDA and 8-OHdG levels higher compare to control group without exercise

Background: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a spice that is often used as traditional medicine. The active ingredient of turmeric, curcumin, acts as an anti-inflammatory on the allergic reaction. Allergy is not a deadly disease, but the disease can be a global health and social economic problems. Aim: This study aimed to prove that turmeric extract influence on the number of eosinophils in the lung tissue of BALB/c mice induced by ovalbumin. Method: This was a true experimental study with post test only controlled group design. The subjects were 18 BALB/c mice, randomly divided into three groups: a negative control group, a positive control group induced by ovalbumin, and a treatment group induced by ovalbumin and administered with turmeric extract at a dose of 100 mg/kgBW. The extract was orally given with sonde for 16 days. At the end of the study mice were terminated, the lung was taken for histopathological examination, and the number of eosinophils calculated in the peribronkhial tissue of lung. Result: This study showed significant differences between the negative control group, the positive control group, and the treatment group (p=0,000). The mean of the number of eosinophils was significantly higher in the positive control group compared to the negative control group (p=0,000) dan significantly lower in the treatment group compared to the positive control group (p=0,016). Conclusion: The turmeric extract can reduce the number of eosinophils in the lung tissue of mice induced by ovalbumin. Keywords: Turmeric extract, eosinophil, mice model of allerg

The purpose of this research was to develop anti-cytokine-based treatment using extract of Plectranthus amboinicus applied to gout arthritis (GA) patients. The research was quasi experimental, with a pretest-posttest randomized control group design. The samples were GA patientsin the Outpatient Installation of Internal Medicine in General Hospital Haji,Surabaya. The sample was comprised of 30 respondents. The respondents were divided into a treatment group and a control group. The treatment group was asked to take medicine from the hospital, coupled with Plectranthus amboinicus extract capsules, for 7 days, during which time patients’ joint inflammation was observed. The control group was provided with only medication from the hospital, and their joint inflammation was likewise observed. Blood samples were taken before and after treatment, to measure the levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, as well as the concentrations of TNF-α and IL-1β. There was a decrease in BUN and creatinine levels in the control group, but it was not significant, decreasing by 3% and 8%, respectively. The treatment group also showed elevated levels of BUN and creatinine, which also was not significant at 3% and 7%, respectively. There was a decrease in the concentration of TNF-α in the control group by 9% and 22%. The concentration of IL-1β in the control group increased by 18%, whereas,in the treatment group,it decreased by3%; however, the decreases in bothgroups were not significant

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Malta. A National Breast Screening Programme (NBSP) was introduced in 2009 for women in the 50 to 60 year old age group. The first 112 patients diagnosed by the NBSP were compared to a matched control group of symptomatic patients randomly selected from the Breast Clinic, who had presented to the clinic with a breast lump. The files of all these patients were reviewed retrospectively. In the screening group there were 94 patients with invasive cancer and 18 patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) while in the control group there were 114 patients with invasive cancer and 3 with DCIS. In the screening group, 81 (86.2%) patients with invasive cancer underwent wide local excision (WLE) and 13 (13.8%) underwent mastectomy. In the control group 88 (77.2%) patients with invasive cancer underwent WLE and 26 (22.8%) had a mastectomy. Out of all the patients in the screened group with DCIS, 12 (66.7%) underwent WLE and 6 (33.3%) underwent mastectomy. In the control group only 3 patients had DCIS and these were all treated by WLE. The average Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI) of the screening population with invasive cancer is (3.28 (95% CI)) and is lower than the NPI of the control group is (3.74 (95% CI)). This study shows that in the screening group there is a higher percentage of patients with DCIS when compared to the control group. Furthermore, the screened group patients with DCIS were more likely to undergo mastectomy than those with invasive cancer.peer-reviewe
