Ethynyl terminated ester oligomers and polymers therefrom

    Get PDF
A new class of ethynyl-terminated oligomers and the process for preparing same are disclosed. Upon the application of heat, with or without a catalyst, the ethynyl groups react to provide crosslinking and chain extension to increase the polymer use temperature and improve the polymer solvent resistance. These improved polyesters are potentially useful in packaging, magnetic tapes, capacitors, industrial belting, protective coatings, structural adhesives and composite matrices

    The bi-composite transition joint

    Get PDF
The application of advanced composite materials to high performance structure frequently results in the desire to fabricate a structure from more than one composite system in order to tailor the composite material capabilities to the design requirements. The bi-composite transition provides a means of joining two different composite structural systems without the weight and complexity of mechanical attachments. The monolayer plies or combinations of plies of one composite system are interleaved with and bonded to the plies of the adjacent composite system, thereby providing a direct load transfer between the two composite structures

Mechanical properties of hand-making polyester composites

The aim of this paper is to determine the effect of arrangement of fibreglass fabric plies in a polymer composite on a strength. Based on the experimental results, the real effect of plies arrangement and their most favourable configuration with respect to strength is determined. The experiments were performed on 4 types of handmade composites which had different fibre orientations and thicknesses. The first three of the composites had three plies of fabric. The plies arrangement in Composite I was unchanged, in Composite II the central ply had the 45 degrees orientation, while in Composite III the outside ply (tangential to the adhesive layer) was oriented at 45 degrees. In contrast. Composite IV consisted of five plies with unchanged arrangement. Composite plates were first cut into smaller specimens and then after stabilizing, the composite specimens were subjected to strength tests. The highest tensile strength and elongation are obtained for Composite IV, which was the higher the thickness from the tested composite samples, but for this composite the tensile modulus was lowest value. Composite II has the lowest values of strength parameters among the tested composites, which contain three plies and central ply has the 45 degrees orientation.Web of Science12212011

Composite fermion model for entanglement spectrum of fractional quantum Hall states

    Get PDF
We show that the entanglement spectrum associated with a certain class of strongly correlated many-body states --- the wave functions proposed by Laughlin and Jain to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect --- can be very well described in terms of a simple model of non-interacting (or weakly interacting) composite fermions.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Fabrication Methods of Double Composites

    Get PDF
This study shows an example for the application of the medium pressure infiltration technique for production of double composite. Prefabricated composite wires were applied as reinforcement in AlSi12 matrix. The reinforcing composite wires contain Nextel 440 ceramic fibres in pure (99,5%) aluminium matrix. These composite wires were produced by continuous infiltration process. I-profiles were fabricated using the composite wires for bending tests. These tests were done on composite wire reinforced and unreinforced pure AlSi12 samples and the results were compared. The interaction between the composite wire and AlSi12 matrix was examined by optical microscopy. The results of the examinations show strong contact between the reinforcement and secondary matrix and all of the reinforced specimens have higher bending strength than the unreinforced ones

Recent research and development in semi-rigid composite joints with precast hollowcore slabs

    Get PDF
Composite structure incorporating steel beams and precast hollowcore slabs is a recently developed composite floor system for building structures. This form of composite construction is so far limited to simple beam-column connections. Although the concept of semi-rigid composite joints has been widely research in the past, most of the researches have been carried out on composite joints with metal deck flooring and solid concrete slabs. Research on composite joints with precast hollowcore slabs is rather limited. As the construction industry demands for rapid construction with reduction in cost and environmental impacts, this form of composite floor system, which does not require major onsite concreting, has become very popular among the designers and engineers in the UK. In this paper, full-scale tests of beam-to-column semi-rigid composite joints with steel beam and precast hollowcore slabs are reported. Based on the tests data; the structural behaviour of these semi-rigid composite joints is discussed together with numerical and finite element modelling. Through parametric studies, an analytical model for the semirigid composite joints is proposed and is verified by both the experimental data and finite element model; and good agreement is obtained

Composite ontology change operators and their customizable evolution strategies

    Get PDF
Change operators are the building blocks of ontology evolution. Elementary, composite and complex change operators have been suggested. While lower-level change operators are useful in terms of finegranular representation of ontology changes, representing the intent of change requires higher-level change operators. Here, we focus on higherlevel composite change operators to perform an aggregated task. We introduce composite-level evolution strategies. The central role of the evolution strategies is to preserve the intent of the composite change with respect to the user’s requirements and to reduce the change operational cost. Composite-level evolution strategies assist in avoiding the illegal changes or presence of illegal axioms that may generate inconsistencies during application of a composite change. We discuss few composite changes along with the defined evolution strategies as an example that allow users to control and customize the ontology evolution process
