    Computer program documentation: ODRC demand plotting program user's guide

    The Orbital Data Reduction Center (ODRC) Demand Plotting Program provides the user with three main options, each of which provides the additional option of generating a numerical summary and/or plots for the Measurement ID's (MID) on the Measurement Node Correlation (MNC) list. Option one reads MID data from word addressable ODRC files, stores the data on a temporary file, and uses it to build the numerical summary and/or plots, according to user input instructions. Options two and three read MID data from a word addressable ODRC file and component node data from a word addressable HSTFLO or HISTRY file. The component node data is used to calculate a predicted MID. Then, for option two, the MID and predicted MID data is used to generate a numerical summary and/or plots. For option three, the component node data itself is used in generating the numerical summary and/or plots. The numerical summary is sent to the BRKPT file, RELOCOK, and can be viewed after the execution of the program using the edit mode to find the desired section of the summary

    Patient-Reported Disability Measures Do Not Correlate with Electrodiagnostic Severity in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

    BACKGROUND: Electrophysiologic studies including electromyography and nerve conduction studies play a role in the evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), despite evidence that these studies do not correlate with CTS-specific symptom scores. There is a lack of evidence comparing electrophysiologic data with general measures of function. METHODS: Fifty patients presenting for CTS treatment over an 8-month period were analyzed retrospectively. All patients completed surveys including the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH) and the Medical Outcomes Study 12-Item Short-Form Survey [(physical component summary 12, mental component summary (MCS-12)]. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies were performed on all patients and compared with outcome scores. RESULTS: Analysis demonstrated no relationship between DASH or MCS-12 and electrodiagnostic severity. No significant correlations were noted between DASH or MCS-12 and median motor or sensory latency. There was a moderate-weak correlation (rho = 0.34) between more severe electrophysiologic grade and better function based on physical component summary 12. CONCLUSIONS: Electrodiagnostic severity grades do not correlate with patient-reported disability, including the DASH and MCS-12 surveys. There is a counterintuitive correlation between more-severe electrodiagnostic findings and decreased physical disability. These findings indicate that disability may not correlate with electrodiagnostic severity of median neuropathy in CTS

    We report on two corpora to be used in the evaluation of component systems for the tasks of (1) linear segmentation of text and (2) summary-directed sentence extraction. We present characteristics of the corpora, methods used in the collection of user judgments, and an overview of the application of the corpora to evaluating the component system.     An update is presented on the NASA Lewis Stirling component technology program. The component technology program has been organized as part of the NASA Lewis effort to develop Stirling converter technology for space power applications. The Stirling space power project is part of the High Capacity Power element of the NASA Civil Space Technology Initiative (CSTI). Lewis is also providing technical management of a DOE funded project to develop Stirling converter systems for distributed dish solar terrestrial power applications. The primary contractors for the space power and solar terrestrial projects develop component technologies directly related to their project goals. This Lewis component technology program, while coordinated with these main projects, is aimed at longer term issues, advanced technologies, and independent assessments. Topics to be discussed include bearings, linear alternators, controls and load interaction, materials/life assessment, and heat exchangers

    The anomalous cosmic-ray component

    This brief report is intended to update the anomalous component section of the summary report of the galactic cosmic-ray working group (Mewaldt et al., 1987), which was drafted at the March 1987 Workshop on the Interplanetary Charged Particle Environment at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The description of the spectrum of the anomalous cosmic-ray component is contained in section 3.3 of that report. That description is based on data analyzed through day 310 of 1986, and in it we proposed that the energy spectrum of the various species of the anomalous component could be derived by scaling from two generic spectra. Two generic spectra were required because the energy spectrum of the anomalous component changed shape near the time of the solar magnetic field reversal in 1980. These two generic spectra are shown in Figure 2 of the summary report

    Views About Health of Russian-Americans Living in Central California

    This quantitative research explored the health views of Russian-Americans to discover information about the health needs of this population. Data were collected via a demographic form and a tool, SF-36 Health Survey. 46 respondents participated and returned completed packets. Results were scored in eight scales representing two different groups of health measurement, physical health and mental health. The scores for each scale and group were compared to the nonn-based scoring for general U.S. population. The mean for the physical component summary (PCS) was 33.31, and the mean for the mental health summary (MCS) was 48.53 indicating that the physical health of people from this sample was much lower than the average for the US general population. However, the mental health of the sample was very close to the average for the US general population. Suggestions are offered for how health care providers can use this information in working with Russian-Americans
