Everyday accounting and management teachers face the challenge of creating learning environments
that motivate students. This chapter describes the Business Simulation (BS) experience that has taken
place at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Institute of Accounting and Administration (IPP/ISCAP). The
chapter presents students’ perceptions about the course and the teaching/learning approach. The results
show that pedagogical methods used (competency-oriented), generic competencies (cooperation and
group work), and interpersonal skills (organisational and communication skills) are relevant for future
accounting professionals. In addition, positive remarks and possible constraints based on observation,
staff meetings, and past research are reported. The chapter concludes with some recommendations from
the project implementation

A guide to develop competency-oriented Lean Learning Factories systematically
In the last decade, various lean learning factories were established in industry and academia around the globe. They are used for experience-based training, education, and practice-oriented research. Learning factories provide a reality-conform production environment as a learning environment. Processes and technologies of the learning factory are based on real industrial sites. Learning factories doesn't only contain single workplaces or machines, but changeable multilink value added chains. Trainees can test and discover lean approaches in this environment and experience the holistic range of technological, organizational, and social issues linked to the approaches. The main goal of learning factories is an effective competency development, i.e. the development of the participants’ ability (including motivational and emotional aspects) to master complex, unfamiliar situations. In order to reach this goal a systematic approach for the competency-oriented design of learning factory courses and systems is needed. Such a competency-oriented approach for the development of lean learning factories is presented, integrating the conceptual design levels ‘learning factory’, ‘teaching module’, and ‘learning situation’. This approach addresses issues of intuitively designed learning factories and therefore enables an effective development of intended competencies. As a result lean learning factories including teaching modules and learning situations meeting the requirements of industry can be designed with a reduced effort and an increased success in the transfer to real problem situations. Among others, a case study of designing a learning module in the environment of the process learning factory CiP in the field of "Lean Quality" is presented in detail

Assessment of Professional Competence in a Construction Management Problem-based Learning Setting
This paper discusses the congruence between problem-based learning (PBL) and competencybased assessment and describes how competency based assessment has been implementedin a professional construction management programme. The design andunderlying principles of assessment approaches used to determine students' professionalcompetence through use of professional standards to frame learning and assessment arediscussed. Through presentation of preliminary findings of a case study that explores staffand student experiences in the construction management programme, the authors describethe issues and challenges they have encountered in implementing competencybased assessment in a PBL programme within the context of higher education
Making the most of psychometric profiles - effective integration into the coaching process
This practical paper is based on a skills session as delivered at the first International Coaching Psychology Conference held in 2006. It commences by discussing the use of psychometrics in general by emphasising the four psychometric principles as hallmarks of a good test; and outlining some of the advantages and potential limitations of psychometrics. In this paper a contemporary instrument, the Saville Consulting Wave® is introduced and its application is discussed in relation to coaching, with particular reference to a performance coaching context at work. It is concluded that no psychometric test is a panacea for each and every situation, but that skilful use greatly enhances the coaching process
