Time-of-arrival lightning activity location system
System fixes location of charge buildup in clouds. It provides range, azimuth, and elevation in real-time so that warning of charge buildup can be implemented
Electrostatic Disorder-Induced Interactions in Inhomogeneous Dielectrics
We investigate the effect of quenched surface charge disorder on
electrostatic interactions between two charged surfaces in the presence of
dielectric inhomogeneities and added salt. We show that in the linear
weak-coupling regime (i.e., by including mean-field and Gaussian-fluctuations
contributions), the image-charge effects lead to a non-zero disorder-induced
interaction free energy between two surfaces of equal mean charge that can be
repulsive or attractive depending on the dielectric mismatch across the
bounding surfaces and the exact location of the disordered charge distribution.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Stability of Transonic Shock Solutions for One-Dimensional Euler-Poisson Equations
In this paper, both structural and dynamical stabilities of steady transonic
shock solutions for one-dimensional Euler-Poission system are investigated.
First, a steady transonic shock solution with supersonic backgroumd charge is
shown to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the
background charge, provided that the electric field is positive at the shock
location. Second, any steady transonic shock solution with the supersonic
background charge is proved to be dynamically and exponentially stable with
respect to small perturbation of the initial data, provided the electric field
is not too negative at the shock location. The proof of the first stability
result relies on a monotonicity argument for the shock position and the
downstream density, and a stability analysis for subsonic and supersonic
solutions. The dynamical stability of the steady transonic shock for the
Euler-Poisson equations can be transformed to the global well-posedness of a
free boundary problem for a quasilinear second order equation with nonlinear
boundary conditions. The analysis for the associated linearized problem plays
an essential role
Fractional electric charge of a magnetic vortex at nonzero temperature
An ideal gas of twodimensional Dirac fermions in the background of a
pointlike magnetic vortex with arbitrary flux is considered. We find that this
system acquires fractional electric charge at finite temperatures and determine
the functional dependence of the thermal average and quadratic fluctuation of
the charge on the temperature, the vortex flux, and the continuous parameter of
the boundary condition at the location of the vortex.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, journal version, minor changes, Eqs.(3.2)-(3.5)

Effects of image charges, interfacial charge discreteness, and surface roughness on the zeta potential of spherical electric double layers
We investigate the effects of image charges, interfacial charge discreteness,
and surface roughness on spherical electric double layers in electrolyte
solutions with divalent counter-ions in the setting of the primitive model. By
using Monte Carlo simulations and the image charge method, the zeta potential
profile and the integrated charge distribution function are computed for
varying surface charge strengths and salt concentrations. Systematic
comparisons were carried out between three distinct models for interfacial
charges: 1) SURF1 with uniform surface charges, 2) SURF2 with discrete point
charges on the interface, and 3) SURF3 with discrete interfacial charges and
finite excluded volume. By comparing the integrated charge distribution
function (ICDF) and potential profile, we argue that the potential at the
distance of one ion diameter from the macroion surface is a suitable location
to define the zeta potential. In SURF2 model, we find that image charge effects
strongly enhance charge inversion for monovalent interfacial charges, and
strongly suppress charge inversion for multivalent interfacial charges. For
SURF3, the image charge effect becomes much smaller. Finally, with image
charges in action, we find that excluded volumes (in SURF3) suppress charge
inversion for monovalent interfacial charges and enhance charge inversion for
multivalent interfacial charges. Overall, our results demonstrate that all
these aspects, i.e., image charges, interfacial charge discreteness, their
excluding volumes have significant impacts on the zeta potential, and thus the
structure of electric double layers.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, some errors are change
Band structure of W and Mo by empirical pseudopotential method
The empirical pseudopotential method (EPM) is used to calculate the band structure of tungsten and molybdenum. Agreement between the calculated reflectivity, density of states, density of states at the Fermi surface and location of the Fermi surface from this study and experimental measurements and previous calculations is good. Also the charge distribution shows the proper topological distribution of charge for a bcc crystal
Interplay between strain, defect charge state and functionality in complex oxides
We use first-principles calculations to investigate the interplay between
strain and the charge state of point defect impurities in complex oxides. Our
work is motivated by recent interest in using defects as active elements to
provide novel functionality in coherent epitaxial films. Using oxygen vacancies
as model point defects, and CaMnO and MnO as model materials, we calculate
the changes in internal strain caused by changing the charge state of the
vacancies, and conversely the effect of strain on charge-state stability. Our
results show that the charge state is a degree of freedom that can be used to
control the interaction of defects with strain and hence the concentration and
location of defects in epitaxial films. We propose the use of field-effect
gating to reversibly change the charge state of defects and hence the internal
strain and corresponding strain-induced functionalities.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
