Global climate change – a crucial aspect of development planning
Author Amanda J. Harvey examines the effect of global warming on the world. Citing concerns over rising sea levels and storm activity, she requests leaders and planners to work together to develop architecture that will take into account continuous climate change
The conservation of New Zealand’s biological heritage and the role of environmental planners
Species diversity is an important aspect of ecosystem health, and a necessary condition for long-term sustainable development. However, it is widely recognised that species extinction is on the increase, as biological diversity comes under pressure from land-use activity and environmental change. Despite an active official conservation programme, the indigenous biodiversity of New Zealand is under threat
Controlling magnetization reversal in Co/Pt nanostructures with perpendicular anisotropy
We demonstrate a simple method to tailor the magnetization reversal
mechanisms of Co/Pt multilayers by depositing them onto large area nanoporous
anodized alumina (AAO) with various aspect ratios, A = pore depth/diameter.
Magnetization reversal of composite (Co/Pt)/AAO films with large A is governed
by strong domain-wall pinning which gradually transforms into a
rotation-dominated reversal for samples with smaller A, as investigated by a
first-order reversal curve method in conjunction with analysis of the angular
dependent switching fields. The change of the magnetization reversal mode is
attributed to topographical changes induced by the aspect ratio of the AAO
templates.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
The Emergency Price Control Act of 1942: Basic Authority and Sanctions
Fast pace of change in the business of technology is the reality of many organizations today. The software development industry is one example where this nature is prominent. Companies need to adapt in ways that eases the persistence against change from external forces. Companies need to turn into Learning Organizations as these help people and organizations embrace change. Two key components of the Learning Organization are the teams, as they are considered to be the fundamental units of organizations, and managers, as they have the biggest impact on facilitating learning in the organization. Therefore, this study has investigated how managers could act to create conditions for encouraging team learning of a software development company to become a Learning Organization. This has been done by conducting a case study at the company Ericsson in Kista, Sweden, who is market leaders within the software development industry. The case design consisted of a two phase method that included both a quantitative and qualitative data collection method. The results indicate that Ericsson could be classified as a Learning Organization and in addition display promising characteristics when it comes to having team learning capabilities. Furthermore, the findings suggest that in order for managers to encourage team learning they should take on a coaching and supporting role to understand the need of the teams; challenge the status quo; empower teams through giving them mandate; allocate time for learning as an integral part of the daily work; and reward learning in teams. The findings of this study have implications both in a theoretical aspect and a sustainability aspect. From the theoretical aspect, the findings provide with further empirical data in a field that is currently dominated by theoretical literature. Furthermore, the findings display a practical example of how managers of a market leading company with promising characteristics of team learning capabilities have acted to create such conditions. From a sustainability aspect, the results of this study give firms a sustainable competitive advantage through increased business performance, healthy labor conditions that are a result of healthy team dynamics and possible encouragement to future attention towards emphasis on environmental aspects
Change in population and land use intensity under the aspect of the physical environment and accessibility
The land use in the Tangale-Waja area is analysed according to the two basic categories of geography: Firstly the manifold interaction between men and environment which form the spatial characteristics of an area, and secondly the decrease of influence with increasing distance. The importance of these two elementary factors is described by indicators as accessibility for the period from the precolonial situation until the time after World War II, when new roads were constructed through the mountainous area. Living in a hilly environment the self contained population (formerly called "hill pagans") had developed special agricultural techniques which can be considered ecologically well adapted. The opening up of the area after the pacification, Christianity and education, led to a considerable increase in population, the expansion of land under cultivation, and the change of settlement structure by down-hill population movement. This resulted in overuse of the fragile natural resources. The size of farm steads became too small for the family unit and the still low accessibility of the hinterland of the main interregional roads as well as inappropriate techniques of agricultural production are shortcomings causing heavy damage to the physical environment and decreasing living standards of the local population
Water governance and institutional change
This dissertation is about water governance and institutional change. The focus on water governance means that we are interested in collective action with respect to water issues, which is not restricted to government action by public authorities, but includes involvement and participative action by private stakeholders. Furthermore, it means that we are not only interested in the `action aspect¿ of collective action, but also in the complexity of the\ud
institutional context in which collective action is embedded and achieved. The focus on institutional change means that we are interested in the evolution of the public domain, the interaction with the private domain, and the shifting boundaries of the public/private divide
AN ANALYSIS OF HESTER PRYNNE’S PERSONALITY ASPECTIN NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE’S NOVEL “THE SCARLET LETTER”
This is a literary study viewing the personality aspect of the main character in the novel “The Scarlet Letter”. Literature reflects human being’s life and is also concerned with states of mind, feelings, attitude and/ or behavior. One of literary work is novel. By reading the novel, readers get enjoyment and knowledge in its content. That is why the thesis writer is motivated in conducting and analyzing this novel. This study is conducted to analyze the personality aspect of Hester Prynne as one of the main characters. The investigation is focused on Hester Prynne’s personality aspect based on The Humanistic Personality theory introduced by Abraham Harold Maslow. This novel was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method because it described about personality aspect of Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The Scarlet Letter”. Then, this novel was appreciated by using the objective approach. The object of this study was the whole events in the novel “The Scarlet Letter”, whereas the data of this study were paragraphs, quotations and dialogues in the novel related to the presence of the personality aspect of the main character, as stated in the research problem. The result of this study showed that Hester Prynne had an interesting personality aspect. This aspect is related to Maslow theory of Humanistic Personality, in the way that she had a strong desire to fulfill her needs. Hester Prynne could develop her personality and became a strong woman than ever before. It made her able to solve her problems in life. She could take herself as a sinner but soon she changed her bad image of the letter “A” that she had to wear in her outchest from adultery became able because of her ability at needlework and her respect to poor people. This image showed that she made a positive change and her personality became better. In conclusion, Hester Prynne had five basic needs that each of them had condition of fulfillment and deficiency. Those needs are physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization needs. It made Hester Prynne a character who had the presence of complex personality in the novel. So, it made this novel to be interesting and need to be recommended to be read by general readers and student
On equivalence of Floer's and quantum cohomology
(In the revised version the relevant aspect of noncompactness of the moduli
of instantons is discussed. It is shown nonperturbatively that any BRST trivial
deformation of A-model which does not change the ranks of BRST cohomology does
not change the topological correlation functions either) We show that the Floer
cohomology and quantum cohomology rings of the almost Kahler manifold M, both
defined over the Novikov ring of the loop space LM of M, are isomorphic. We do
it using a BRST trivial deformation of the topological A-model. As an example
we compute the Floer = quantum cohomology of the 3-dimensional flag space Fl_3.Comment: 28 pages, HUTP-93/A02
ECONOMIC VALUATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE MARINE FISHERIES IN CILACAP, CENTRAL JAVA
The objective of this study is to estimate the impact of climate change in the marine capture fisheries in Cilacap, Central Java. Also to formulate the adaptation and mitigation strategies on the impacts of climate change.
Data collection was done through multi-stages sampling. Samples of respondents were: 73 marine-fisher respondents, 43 collector respondents, and 100 consumer respondents, which were analyzed by descriptive statistics. In the aspect of production, there was a decrease in catch which caused severe losses in 26 respondents, an increase in length of trip which was vary from 1 day to 7 days, and changes in fishers spending, such as: change in cost of fuel, change in food & lodging cost, and change in productivity. Lack of production has led to a decrease in fish-stocks. Therefore availability and sustainability of fish-stock in the aspect of distribution became questionable, which influenced availability and affordability of fish in market (Aspect of consumption).
Thus, enhancing the performance of extension institution was needed to anticipate the impact of climate change in marine fisheries sector. An ideal extension institution was made to enhance the performance of extension institution was made in order to estimate transaction cost of the policy. The result has shown the amount of information cost, policing cost and operational & maintenance cost to establish a successful program
