    Tc suppression and resistivity in cuprates with out of plane defects

    Recent experiments introducing controlled disorder into optimally doped cuprate superconductors by both electron irradiation and chemical substitution have found unusual behavior in the rate of suppression of the critical temperature Tc vs. increase in residual resistivity. We show here that the unexpected discovery that the rate of Tc suppression vs. resistivity is stronger for out-of-plane than for in-plane impurities may be explained by consistent calculation of both Tc and resistivity if the potential scattering is assumed to be nearly forward in nature. For realistic models of impurity potentials, we further show that significant deviations from the universal Abrikosov-Gor'kov Tc suppression behavior may be expected for out of plane impurities.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Anisotropic J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression in nuclear collisions

    The nuclear overlap zone in non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions is azimuthally very asymmetric. By varying the angle between the axes of deformation and the transverse direction of the pair momenta, the suppression of J/ΨJ/\Psi and Ψ\Psi' will oscillate in a characteristic way. Whereas the average suppression is mostly sensitive to the early and high density stages of the collision, the amplitude is more sensitive to the late stages. This effect provides additional information on the J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression mechanisms such as direct absorption on participating nucleons, comover absorption or formation of a quark-gluon plasma. The behavior of the average J/ΨJ/\Psi suppression and its amplitude with centrality of the collisions is discussed for SPS, RHIC and LHC energies with and without a phase transition.Comment: Revised and extended version, new figure

    Phase transition of color-superconductivity and cooling behavior of quark stars

    We discuss the color-superconductivity and its effect on the cooling behavior of strange quark stars. The neutrino emissivity and specific heat of quark matter are calculated within the BCS theory. In the superconducting phase, the emissivity decreases and causes suppression of the cooling rate. It is shown that the phase transition leads to a sudden discontinuous suppression of the cooling rate in cooperation with the specific heat.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Adenovirus-mediated suppression of hypothalamic glucokinase affects feeding behavior

    Glucokinase (GK), the hexokinase involved in glucosensing in pancreatic β-cells, is also expressed in arcuate nucleus (AN) neurons and hypothalamic tanycytes, the cells that surround the basal third ventricle (3V). Several lines of evidence suggest that tanycytes may be involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Tanycytes have extended cell processes that contact the feeding-regulating neurons in the AN, particularly, agouti-related protein (AgRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons. In this study, we developed an adenovirus expressing GK shRNA to inhibit GK expression in vivo. When injected into the 3V of rats, this adenovirus preferentially transduced tanycytes. qRT-PCR and Western blot assays confirmed GK mRNA and protein levels were lower in GK knockdown animals compared to the controls. In response to an intracerebroventricular glucose injection, the mRNA levels of anorexigenic POMC and CART and orexigenic AgRP and NPY neuropeptides were altered in GK knockdown animals. Similarly, food intake, meal duration, frequency of eating events and the cumulative eating time were increased, whereas the intervals between meals were decreased in GK knockdown rats, suggesting a decrease in satiety.     Ultrafast photocurrent measurement of the escape time of electrons and holes from carbon nanotube PN junction photodiodes

    Ultrafast photocurrent measurements are performed on individual carbon nanotube PN junction photodiodes. The photocurrent response to sub-picosecond pulses separated by a variable time delay {\Delta}t shows strong photocurrent suppression when two pulses overlap ({\Delta}t = 0). The picosecond-scale decay time of photocurrent suppression scales inversely with the applied bias VSD, and is twice as long for photon energy above the second subband E22 as compared to lower energy. The observed photocurrent behavior is well described by an escape time model that accounts for carrier effective mass.Comment: 8 pages Main text, 4 Figure
