Quantitative results for the Fleming-Viot particle system in discrete space

    Get PDF
We show, for a class of discrete Fleming-Viot type particle systems, that the convergence to the equilibrium is exponential for a suitable Wassertein coupling distance. The approach provides an explicit quantitative estimate on the rate of convergence. As a consequence, we show that the conditioned process converges exponentially fast to a unique quasi-stationary distribution. Moreover, by estimating the two-particle correlations, we prove that the Fleming-Viot process converges, uniformly in time, to the conditioned process with an explicit rate of convergence. We illustrate our results on the examples of the complete graph and of the two point space

Mechanical behaviour with temperatures of aluminum matrix composites with CNTs

Aluminum is a very useful structural metal employed in different industrial sectors, in particular it is used in large quantities in automotive, aeronautic and nautical industries. The main reasons of its wide use are: a very good oxidation resistance, excellent ductility, low melting temperature (660 °C) and low density (2.71 g/cm3). However, in order to reduce the emissions and fuel consumption is necessary to reduce the overall weight of vehicles by increasing mechanical properties of the structural material. The improvement of mechanical properties is normally achieved through use of reinforcement in materials, used like matrix, in order to improve some specific characteristics. In this work composites of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in aluminum were made. The most difficulties in the preparation of this type of composite are represented by the low wettability between metallic matrix and fillers and the possibility of the oxidation of metal during melting with consequent decreasing of mechanical proprieties. The composite was obtained by three consecutive step: the first one is the functionalization of fillers surface to improve the fillers dispersion, the second one is the dispersion of fillers in the matrix by powder mixing and the third one is the melting and casting of the mix prepared. In particular, fillers used are multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with functionalized surface by treatment with a solfonitric solution. Melting and casting are carried out with the aid of an induction furnace with a controlled atmosphere system and centrifugal casting. Argon is the inert gas used to prevent the oxidation of aluminium during fusion. Young’s modulus was evaluated at different temperature and correlated with the different CNTs percentage. The dispersion rate of fillers and the microstructure of the sample were evaluated by FESEM micrograph

Behavior patterns in hormonal treatments using fuzzy logic models

Assisted reproductive technologies are a combination of medical strategies designed to treat infertility patients. Ideal stimulation treatment has to be individualized, but one of the main challenges which clinicians face in the everyday clinic is how to select the best medical protocol for a patient. This work aims to look for behavior patterns in this kind of treatments, using fuzzy logic models with the objective of helping gynecologists and embryologists to make decisions that could improve the process of in vitro fertilization. For this purpose, a real-world dataset composed of one hundred and twenty-three (123) patients and five hundred and fifty-nine (559) treatments applied in relation to such patients provided by an assisted reproduction clinic, has been used to obtain the fuzzy models. As conclusion, this work corroborates some known clinic experiences, provides some new ones and proposes a set of questions to be solved in future experiments.Ministerio de EconomĂa y Competitividad TIN2013-46928-C3-3-RMinisterio de EconomĂa y Competitividad TIN2016-76956- C3-2-RMinisterio de EconomĂa y Competitividad TIN2015-71938-RED

Fracture behaviour of alloys for a new laser ranged satellite

    Get PDF
A new laser-ranged satellite called LARES 2 (Laser Relativity Satellite 2) has been recently designed for accurate tests of Einsten's theory of General Relativity and space geodesy. Some high density alloys (8.6-9.3 g/dm3) have been studied and characterised for producing the LARES 2 passive satellite. The considered materials were Copper and Nickel based alloys that have been produced and characterised. Aim of this work was to analyse their fracture behaviour that is a requirement for materials to be used for space applications. Fracture tests have been carried out on several specimens and fracture surfaces have been analysed

How Do Emotions Influence Saving Behavior

    Get PDF
Employers have moved away from traditional defined benefit pension plans to defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s. As a result, many individuals are now required to make their own retirement saving and investment decisions, which has raised concerns about their ability and desire to handle these decisions. Since investment choices have major implications for future financial welfare, it is important to understand how individuals make these decisions and to identify potential ways to improve the decision-making process. Researchers have explored various factors affecting retirement saving, such as income, age, job tenure, self-control failure, financial literacy and trust. No prior research, however, has looked at the effects of emotions on retirement savings. This Issue in Brief examines how two different emotions – hope and hopefulness – affect 401(k) participation and asset allocation. The first section defines the terms. The second section describes the structure of a recent field experiment. The third section summarizes the results, which reveal that having high hope (i.e. yearning) – for a secure retirement leads to different investment behaviors than having high hopefulness (i.e. perceived likelihood). Furthermore, threats to hope and threats to hopefulness are found to have different effects on 401(k) participation and investment decisions. The final section concludes.

Health Seeking Behavior In Bulak Banteng, Surabaya

Infant and under-five mortality rate in the world is still a major health problem that must be resolved immediately. Mother's health seeking behavior very important to manage the health of his children. Purpose of this study was to investigate health seeking behavior among mothers when their children were sick. This study was descriptive quantitative involved 50 respondents. The results show majority mothers choose to take action when their children are sick with most choosing to take them to health care facilities and do their own treatment. Mothers are expected to always care for their children well and not too late for giving treatment when their children are sick
