At first batik was known as a patterned cloth that contains a high philosophy which is one of Indonesian culture. The ability of batik to adapt to the times makes batik develop in terms of application. Not limited to the world of fashion, batik is now starting to enter the world of interiors due to the development of the industry that allows batik motifs to be applied tointerior elements and become the identity of the Indonesian people with new, more modern interpretations so that it can be accepted by the general public and preserve batik culture. Grand Preanger Hotel is one of the hotels in Bandung that applies batik to interior designelements. In addition to its function for aesthetic elements that are full of meaning, the application of batik in the interior is expected to preserve the culture of batik itself. Its application in the hotel can indirectly introduce batik to hotel visitors both local and foreign tourists. Keywords batik application, interior design, hote

The purpose of this research is to determine the pigments in the bark and leaves of mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata), to analyze rate of color fastness in batik, level of consumer interest, and most effective pricing for the resulting batik products. The research was conducted between June 2015 and February 2016, and took place in Mangunharjo village, Tugu district, Semarang city, Indonesia. The pigment identification tests were performed in Laboratorium Terpadu Universitas Diponegoro, Indonesia. This research focused on the leaves and barks of mangrove plants. The leaves and barks were extracted to be used as dyeing agents, after which the batik fabrics were fixated using alum, limestone and lotus. This descriptive research employed UV-Vis spectrophotometry to identify pigment and Adobe Photoshop computer program to perform color fastness analysis. The result showed that chlorophyll is a pigment which contributes to the color green in leaves. Photochemical test results also show that the pigment associated to the blackish-green hue was tannin, andthat which was associated with red was flavonoid and quinone. The various colors were applied in batik dyeing process, which resulted in a range of color from yellow to dark brown. Color fastness test of batik dyed with mangrove-derived pigments on wash air dry, wash press dry, and wash sun dry using calico as fabric showed that alum and limestone fixated fabric had the least color fastness, while conversely, lotus-fixated fabric displayed good color retention. Levels of consumer interest naturally-dyed batik fabric by alum fixation was 20%. Of all the respondents, 46.67% showed interest in limestone-fixated batik, whereas 40% responded well with the lotus-fixated batik. Consumer acceptance levels for the mangrove-dyed batik fixated by alum, limestone, and lotus were 6.67%, 16.66% and 13.33% respectively. High consumer interest in fabric fixated by limestone and lotus was attributed to darker and stronger hues. The most effective price point suggested per 2.1 x 1 m of fabric was between IDR 200,000 to IDR 350,000

A GENRE ANALYSIS OF SALES PROMOTION LETTERS AND COMPANY PROFILES IN AN INDONESIAN BATIK INDUSTRY

This study explored company profiles and sales promotion letters of batik from two big batik companies in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia. Data of the research are of two types, the primary and secondary data. The former refers to words, phrases, and clauses taken from the company profiles and sales promotion letters of batik written in Bahasa Indonesia. The latter refers to transcribed data obtained from in-depth interviews with the text producers and buyers. Two batik company profiles and three sales promotion letters were analyzed. Two informants from each batik company representing the text production side were interviewed; they were the marketing and promotion managers from the two batik industries. Likewise, one buyer from each batik company representing the text consumption side was also interviewed. The research employed theories of genre analysis proposed by Swales (1990) which focused on patterns of rhetorical organization and genre-specific language features. In terms of data collection, the present study also draws on ethno-methodological tradition within the communication framework in an institutionalized socio-cultural context (Lillis, 2008). Ethnographical research primarily uncovers and describes beliefs, values, and attitudes that structure the behavior of a group (Baumgartner & Hensley, 2006). In terms of data analysis, this study employed the multi-perspective model of analysis advocated by Bhatia (2004) wihich focuses on textual and socio-cognitive aspects of the texts. The textual aspect explicates the use of text-internal features in embodying values in the context of rhetorical moves, discourse strategies, regularities of organisation, intertextuality and some aspects of interdiscursivity. The socio-cognitive aspect refers to participants’ relationship and their contributions to the process of genre construction, interpretation, use and exploitation in the context of professional practices and constraints. This study has arrived at some conclusions. First, although the most important intention of any kind of business is making a profit, the strong influence of Javanese culture has made the genuine intention of getting the profit to be less explicitly stated. In fact, the profit making notion is transformed into a more social and cultural preservation in orientation. Secondly, writers of batik company profiles seemed to acknowledge the function of these specific business documents as one of the primary image-building components in their promoting efforts. This study also found some varieties in terms of function between the established and less established image- building promotional tool. However, the textual analysis and the in-depth interviews with the text producers supported the view that company profiles of batik had been ideally used to create a potitive and favorable image upon the company through the employment of moral and cultural commitment to batik making, history, vision and mission, new technology in the production processes, organizational structure, and lists of achievements and awards. Thirdly, the most distinctive feature that differentiated establishing credentials in English and that of the Indonesian, especially in the batik business context, had been the use of moral obligation to preserve the native culture and family relation with the national heroes. Writers of the English sales promotion letters, on the contrary, highlighted the needs of future buyers and claimed that their companies were the best to fulfill the needs. Likewise, due to cultural constraints, the sales promotion letters of batik in question did not include the moves of offering incentives and using pressure tactics. The writers rather used the move of eliciting response which is less persuasive and less direct compared to that of the English sales promotion letters. Fourth, the chemistry between writers and readers of sales promotion letters and company profiles of batik constructed a strong ground for mutual understanding and thus paved the way to purchase. Finally, this study had shown very clearly how the wider culture and the culture of the discourse community contributed to the framing and formatting of sales promotion letters and company profiles of batik in terms of lexico-grammar, cognitive structuring, intertextuality and interdiscursivity. In the past, studies done in Bahasa Indonesia to business texts were more oriented to below sentence level phenomena (Kusrianti, 2008; Purnanto, 2002). Thus, the present study contributes to the study of above sentence level phenomena, especially the features and convensions of sales promotion letters and company profiles of batik. Additionally, the present study provides input to writers of sales promotion letters and company profiles to have a direct, persuasive, clear, and systematic promotional text especially for export purposes. Last but not least, the present study has provided a perspective into the written business communication of batik industries drawn from an empirical study

    Get PDF
Human-computer interaction has been the cause of the emerging innovations in many fields, including in design and art, architectural, technological artifacts, and even traditional heritage. In the case of Indonesian traditional heritages, the computation of fractal designs has been introduced to develop batik design – the genuine textile art and skill that becomes a symbol of Indonesian culture. The uniqueness of Batik, which depicted in the richness of its motifs, is regarded as one of interesting aspect to be researched and innovated using computational techniques. Recent studies of batik motifs have discovered conjecture to the existence of fractal geometry in batik designs. This finding has given some inspiration of implementing certain fractal concepts, such escape-time fractal (complex plane) and iterated function system to generate batik motifs. We develop motif generator based upon the Collage Theorem by using Java TM platform. This software is equipped by interface that can be used by user to generate basic patterns, which could be interpreted and painted as batik motif. Experimentally, we found that computationally generated fractal motifs are appropriated to be implemented as batik motif. However, human made batik motifs are less detail and some of them differ significantly with the computationally generated ones for tools used to draw batik and human aesthetic constraints

The paper discusses the terminology behind batik crafting and showed the aspects of self-similarity in its ornaments. Even though a product of batik cannot be reduced merely into its decorative properties, it is shown that computation can capture some interesting aspects in the batik-making ornamentation. There are three methods that can be exploited to the generative batik, i.e.: using fractal as the main source of decorative patterns, the hybrid batik that is emerged from the acquisition of L-System Thue-Morse algorithm for the harmonization within the grand designs by using both fractal images and traditional batik patterns, and using the random image tessellation as well as previous tiling algorithms for generating batik designs. The latest can be delivered by using a broad sources of motifs and traditionally recognized graphics. The paper concludes with certain aspects that shows how the harmony of traditional crafting and modern computation could bring us a more creative aspects of the beautiful harmony inherited in the aesthetic aspects of batik crafting
