Modeling DNA Structure, Elasticity and Deformations at the Base-pair Level
We present a generic model for DNA at the base-pair level. We use a variant
of the Gay-Berne potential to represent the stacking energy between neighboring
base-pairs. The sugar-phosphate backbones are taken into account by semi-rigid
harmonic springs with a non-zero spring length. The competition of these two
interactions and the introduction of a simple geometrical constraint leads to a
stacked right-handed B-DNA-like conformation. The mapping of the presented
model to the Marko-Siggia and the Stack-of-Plates model enables us to optimize
the free model parameters so as to reproduce the experimentally known
observables such as persistence lengths, mean and mean squared base-pair step
parameters. For the optimized model parameters we measured the critical force
where the transition from B- to S-DNA occurs to be approximately . We
observe an overstretched S-DNA conformation with highly inclined bases that

The 2011 Industrial Relations Reform and Nominal Wage Adjustments in Greece
This study investigates nominal contractual base-wage adjustments in Greece associated with the 2011 industrial relations reform which re-defined the limits within which base wages could oscillate and allowed workers’ associations to negotiate for wages at the firm level. The assessment covers the period 2010-2013 and is based on information extracted from the universe of firm-level contracts signed in this period. We found that firm-level contracts increased dramatically shortly after the reform, now covering a larger pool of workers, especially in larger firms, and are associated with higher base-wage reductions in the post-reform period. At the firm level, wage reductions are higher when workers are represented by a workers’ association rather than a typical trade union. In addition, a heterogeneous effect is uncovered regarding the factors that shape base-wage adjustments (firm size, profitability, structure of bargaining body and aggregate unemployment) between new and traditional forms of workers’ representation in collective bargaining
ON CHOOSING A BASE COVERAGE LEVEL FOR MULTIPLE PERIL CROP INSURANCE CONTRACTS
For multiple peril crop insurance, the U.S. Department of Agriculture'Â’s Risk Management Agency estimates the premium rate for a base coverage level and then uses multiplicative adjustment factors to recover rates at other coverage levels. Given this methodology, accurate estimation of the base coverage level from 65% to 50%. The purpose of this analysis was to provide some insight into whether such a change should or should not be carried out. Electronic structure and carrier transfer in B-DNA monomer polymers and dimer polymers: Stationary and time-dependent aspects of wire model vs. extended ladder model
We employ two Tight-Binding (TB) approaches to study the electronic structure
and hole or electron transfer in B-DNA monomer polymers and dimer polymers made
up of monomers (base pairs): (I) at the base-pair level, using the on-site
energies of base pairs and the hopping integrals between successive base pairs,
i.e., a wire model and (II) at the single-base level, using the on-site
energies of the bases and the hopping integrals between neighboring bases,
i.e., an \textit{extended} ladder model since we also include diagonal
hoppings. We solve a system of ("matrix dimension") coupled equations [(I)
= , (II) = ] for the time-independent problem, and a system of
coupled order differential equations for the time-dependent
problem. We study the HOMO and the LUMO eigenspectra, the occupation
probabilities, the Density of States (DOS) and the HOMO-LUMO gap as well as the
mean over time probabilities to find the carrier at each site [(I) base pair or
(II) base)], the Fourier spectra, which reflect the frequency content of charge
transfer (CT) and the pure mean transfer rates from a certain site to another.
The two TB approaches give coherent, complementary aspects of electronic
properties and charge transfer in B-DNA monomer polymers and dimer polymers.Comment: 20 pages, 23 figure

Monetary Policies in Interdependent Economies: An Open Economy Explanation for Base Drift and Price-Level Non-Trend-Stationarities
Most nations have experienced \u27base drift\u27 of their money stocks and associated price-level non-trend-stationarities. Recent explanations for this fact have emphasized tensions among various possible objectives of central banks in closed-economy or small-open-economy frameworks. In contrast, this paper explores structural and policy interdependence among economies as an explanation for price-level non-trend-stationarities. It demonstrates that such interdependence can induce central banks to follow non-trend-stationary policies even if they desire only to smooth prices in their home economies
Sequence-specific double-strand cleavage of DNA by penta-N-methylpyrrolecarboxamide-EDTA·Fe(II)
In the presence of O2 and 5 mM dithiothreitol, penta-N-methylpyrrolecarboxamide-EDTA·Fe(II) [P5E·Fe(II)] at 0.5 µ M cleaves pBR322 plasmid DNA (50 µ M in base pairs) on opposite strands to afford discrete DNA fragments as analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. High-resolution denaturing gel electrophoresis of a 32P-end-labeled 517-base-pair restriction fragment containing a major cleavage site reveals that P5E·Fe(II) cleaves 3-5 base pairs contiguous to a 6-base-pair sequence, 5'-T-T-T-T-T-A-3' (4,323-4,328 base pairs). The major binding orientation of the pentapeptide occurs with the amino terminus at the adenine side of this sequence. In the presence of 5 mM dithiothreitol, 0.01 µ M P5E·Fe(II) converts form I pBR322 DNA at 0.22 µ M plasmid (1.0 mM in base pairs) to 40% form II, indicating the cleavage reaction is catalytic, turning over a minimum of nine times. This synthetic molecule achieves double-strand cleavage of DNA (pH 7.9, 25 degrees C) at the 6-base-pair recognition level and may provide an approach to the design of "artificial restriction enzymes.
