Present-day vegetation and the Holocene and recent development of Egelsee-Moor, Salzburg province, Austria
This paper describes the present-day vegetation, stratigraphy and developmental history of the mire of Egelsee-Moor (Salzburg, Austria; 45°45′N, 13°8.5′E, 700 m a.s.l., 15 ha in area) since the early Late Glacial on the basis of 4 transects with 14 trial borings across the peatland. We present a vegetation map of the mire, a longitudinal section through the peat body based on six cores showing the peat types, overview macrofossil diagrams of six cores showing the local mire development and two pollen diagrams covering the Late Glacial and Holocene. The chronology of the diagrams depends on biostratigraphic dating for the Late Glacial and early Holocene and radiocarbon dating for the remaining Holocene. The northern part of the mire originated through terrestrialisation of nutrient-rich, mostly inundated fen and the southern part through paludification of wet soils. The very small lake of today was a reservoir until recently for providing water-power for timber rafting (‘Holztrift’). The mire vegetation today is a complex of forested parts (mainly planted Pinus sylvestris and Thuja occidentalis, but also spontaneous Picea abies, Betula pubescens and Frangula alnus), reed-lands (Phragmites) and litter meadows (Molinietum, Schoenetum, etc.). The central part has hummock-hollow complexes with regionally rare species of transitional mires (Drosera anglica, D. intermedia, Lycopodiella inundata, Scorpidium scorpioides, Sphagnum platyphyllum, S. subnitens). The results indicate that some of the mid-Holocene sediments may have been removed by the timber-rafting practices, and that water extraction from the hydrological catchment since 1967 has resulted in a partial shift of transitional mire to ombrotrophic bog. The latter potentially endangers the regionally rare species and was used as an argument to stop further water extraction
Abnormale rendementen rond bekendmaking problemen bij financiële verslaggeving
Dit onderzoek is gericht op marktrendementen rond de bekendmaking van problemen op het gebied van interne betrouwbaarheid door beursgenoteerde ondernemingen. Wij concluderen dat dergelijke mededelingen effect hebben op de beurskoers. Dit effect is er met name in de periode vóór de bekendmaking. Er is dan sprake van substantiële negatieve abnormale rendementen, terwijl deze rendementen rond en na de bekendmaking veel kleiner zijn. We hebben relevante gegevens verzameld van alle ondernemingen die (in de rapportages aan de Secueties and Exchange Commission) melding maakten van tekortkomingen/ zwakheden in de interne betrouwbaarheid over de periode november 2003 - december 2004. Het opsplitsen van de steekproef naar de soort bekendgemaakte problemen biedt nader inzicht in de relatie tussen de bekendmaking en de abnormale rendementen. Problemen op het gebied van de personeelsbezetting hebben geen wezenlijk effect op aandelenrendementen in de post-factum periode, dat wil zeggen: na de bekendmaking. Problemen op het gebied van de complexiteit van fi nanciële verslaggeving leiden echter tot een aanzienlijke daling van de gemiddelde abnormale rendementen in de post-factum periode. Bovendien hebben we ontdekt dat latere abnormale rendementen in belangrijke mate worden beïnvloed door de bekendmaking van de identiteit van degene die het initiatief neemt tot het bekendmaken van problemen op het gebied van interne betrouwbaarheid. Als het initiatief wordt genomen door de accountant zien we een verdere daling, terwijl bekendmakingen op initiatief van de onderneming in de periode na de bekendmaking positieve abnormale rendementen laten zien
VOEvent Standard for Fast Radio Bursts
Fast radio bursts are a new class of transient radio phenomena currently
detected as millisecond radio pulses with very high dispersion measures. As new
radio surveys begin searching for FRBs a large population is expected to be
detected in real-time, triggering a range of multi-wavelength and
multi-messenger telescopes to search for repeating bursts and/or associated
emission. Here we propose a method for disseminating FRB triggers using Virtual
Observatory Events (VOEvents). This format was developed and is used
successfully for transient alerts across the electromagnetic spectrum and for
multi-messenger signals such as gravitational waves. In this paper we outline a
proposed VOEvent standard for FRBs that includes the essential parameters of
the event and where these parameters should be specified within the structure
of the event. An additional advantage to the use of VOEvents for FRBs is that
the events can automatically be ingested into the FRB Catalogue (FRBCAT)
enabling real-time updates for public use. We welcome feedback from the
community on the proposed standard outlined below and encourage those

Contraction pressure analysis using optical imaging in normal and MYBPC3-mutated hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes grown on matrices with tunable stiffness
Current in vivo disease models and analysis methods for cardiac drug development have been insufficient in providing accurate and reliable predictions of drug efficacy and safety. Here, we propose a custom optical flow-based analysis method to quantitatively measure recordings of contracting cardiomyocytes on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), compatible with medium-throughput systems. Movement of the PDMS was examined by covalently bound fluorescent beads on the PDMS surface, differences caused by increased substrate stiffness were compared, and cells were stimulated with β-agonist. We further validated the system using cardiomyocytes treated with endothelin-1 and compared their contractions against control and cells incubated with receptor antagonist bosentan. After validation we examined two MYBPC3-mutant patient-derived cell lines. Recordings showed that higher substrate stiffness resulted in higher contractile pressure, while beating frequency remained similar to control. β-agonist stimulation resulted in both higher beating frequency as well as higher pressure values during contraction and relaxation. Cells treated with endothelin-1 showed an increased beating frequency, but a lower contraction pressure. Cells treated with both endothelin-1 and bosentan remained at control level of beating frequency and pressure. Lastly, both MYBPC3-mutant lines showed a higher beating frequency and lower contraction pressure. Our validated method is capable of automatically quantifying contraction of hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes on a PDMS substrate of known shear modulus, returning an absolute value. Our method could have major benefits in a medium-throughput setting.</p
Feasibility of Sentinel Node Biopsy in Head and Neck Melanoma Using a Hybrid Radioactive and Fluorescent Tracer
This study was designed to examine the feasibility of combining lymphoscintigraphy and intraoperative sentinel node identification in patients with head and neck melanoma by using a hybrid protein colloid that is both radioactive and fluorescent. Eleven patients scheduled for sentinel node biopsy in the head and neck region were studied. Approximately 5 h before surgery, the hybrid nanocolloid labeled with indocyanine green (ICG) and technetium-99m ((99m)Tc) was injected intradermally in four deposits around the scar of the primary melanoma excision. Subsequent lymphoscintigraphy and single photon emission computed tomography with computed tomography (SPECT/CT) were performed to identify the sentinel nodes preoperatively. In the operating room, patent blue dye was injected in 7 of the 11 patients. Intraoperatively, sentinel nodes were acoustically localized with a gamma ray detection probe and visualized by using patent blue dye and/or fluorescence-based tracing with a dedicated near-infrared light camera. A portable gamma camera was used before and after sentinel node excision to confirm excision of all sentinel nodes. A total of 27 sentinel nodes were preoperatively identified on the lymphoscintigraphy and SPECT/CT images. All sentinel nodes could be localized intraoperatively. In the seven patients in whom blue dye was used, 43% of the sentinel nodes stained blue, whereas all were fluorescent. The portable gamma camera identified additional sentinel nodes in two patients. Ex vivo, all radioactive lymph nodes were fluorescent and vice versa, indicating the stability of the hybrid tracer. ICG-(99m)Tc-nanocolloid allows for preoperative sentinel node visualization and concomitant intraoperative radio- and fluorescence guidance to the same sentinel nodes in head and neck melanoma patient
