    Monitoring denitrification by means of pH and ORP in continuous-flow conventional activated sludge processes

    Indirect signal analysis (pH, ORP and DO) are often used in monitoring and control of SBRs (Sequencing Batch Reactors), where operating conditions can be clearly identified during the various cyclic phases. Only few studies applied this methodology to control continuous flow plants, as it is much more difficult to identify operating conditions because of continually variable inflow characteristics. This work applied indirect signal analysis to control pre-denitrification in continuous-flow activated sludge processes: (i) a laboratory-scale plant, fed with synthetic wastewater, simulating real municipal wastewater and (ii) a pilot-scale plant, fed with real sewage. Three different ranges of ORP values identify three operational conditions of the denitrification process. (1) ORP > 0 mV means that nitrates and/or nitrites are present, possibly due to a low C/N ratio. (2) –50 < ORP < –200 mV is typical of normal operating conditions, that is with a balanced C/N ratio. (3) ORP < –350 mV means that oxidized nitrogen load is too low or that C/N exceeds the stoichiometric ratio. The trend of pH, instead, points out if and how the process is evolving from one to another operating condition. The correlation between pH and ORP signals (as well as their derivatives) allows to restore normal operating conditions by acting on the internal recycle flow-rate. Improved denitrification process ensures lower effluent nitrate concentration, and reduce external carbon dosage to achieve stricter nitrogen limits

    N is known to be the most limiting element for vegetation growth in temperate and boreal forests. The expected increases in global temperature are predicted to accelerate N mineralization, therefore incrementing N availability in the soil and affecting the soil C cycle as well. While there is an abundance of C data collected to fulfill the requirements for national GHG accounting, more limited information is available for soil N accumulation and storage in relation to forest categories and altitudinal gradients. The data collected by the second Italian National Forest Inventory, spanning a wide range of temperature and precipitation values (10° latitudinal range), represented a unique opportunity to calculate N content and C/N ratio of the different soil layers to a depth of 30 cm. Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) models were applied to investigate the main determinants of soil N distribution and C/N ratio. Forest category was shown to be the main explanatory factor of soil N variability in seven out of eight models, both for forest floor and mineral soil layers. Moreover latitude explained a larger share of variability than single climate variables. BRT models explained, on average, the 49% of the data variability, with the remaining fraction likely due to soil-related variables that were unaccounted for. Accurate estimations of N pools and their determinants in a climate change perspective are consequently required to predict the potential impact of their degradation on forest soil N pools

    Immigrant status and acculturation influence substance use among New Zealand youth.

    Objective: To investigate the associations between generational status, acculturation and substance use among immigrant and non-immigrant secondary school students in New Zealand. Methods: A nationally representative sample of secondary school students in New Zealand was selected using a twostage cluster sample design. Of the 8,999 students in the sample, 23.81% were first-generation immigrants and 20.90% were second-generation immigrants; the remaining 55.29% students are collectively referred to as 'non-immigrant' peers. Logistic regression models adjusted the associations of interest for age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and experience of ethnic discrimination. Results: First and second-generation immigrants showed significantly lower risks of smoking cigarettes compared with their non-immigrant peers. Similar trends were apparent for consuming alcohol and marijuana weekly. The inclusion of some characteristics suggestive of acculturation in multivariable models did not influence the relationship between generational status and smoking cigarettes, but attenuated the apparent protective effect of being a first-generation immigrant with regard to alcohol and marijuana use. Conclusions and implications: The study shows the lower likelihood of substance use among newer immigrants in a nationally representative sample of New Zealand youth. Policies and health programs that build on this positive profile and reduce the risk of adverse changes over time require attention

    Tubulin nitration in human gliomas

    Immunohistochem. and biochem. investigations showed that significant protein nitration occurs in human gliomas, esp. in grade IV glioblastomas at the level of astrocytes and oligodendrocytes and neurons. Enhanced alpha-tubulin immunoreactivity was co-present in the same elements in the glioblastomas. Proteomic methodologies were employed to identify a nitrated protein band at 55 kDa as alpha-tubulin. Peptide mass fingerprinting procedures demonstrated that tubulin is nitrated at Tyr224 in grade IV tumor samples but is unmodified in grade I samples and in non-cancerous brain tissue. These results provide the first characterization of endogenously nitrated tubulin from human tumor samples

    Giant Sigmoid Diverticulum: A Rare Presentation of a Common Pathology

    Although colonic diverticulum is a common disease, affecting about 35% of patients above the age of 60, giant sigmoid diverticulum is an uncommon variant of which only relatively few cases have been described in the literature. We report on our experience with a patient affected by giant sigmoid diverticulum who was treated with diverticulectomy. Resection of the diverticulum is a safe surgical procedure, provided that the colon section close to the lesion presents no sign of flogosis or diverticula; in addition, recurrences are not reported after 6-year follow-up

    Isomorphisms of types in the presence of higher-order references (extended version)

    We investigate the problem of type isomorphisms in the presence of higher-order references. We first introduce a finitary programming language with sum types and higher-order references, for which we build a fully abstract games model following the work of Abramsky, Honda and McCusker. Solving an open problem by Laurent, we show that two finitely branching arenas are isomorphic if and only if they are geometrically the same, up to renaming of moves (Laurent's forest isomorphism). We deduce from this an equational theory characterizing isomorphisms of types in our language. We show however that Laurent's conjecture does not hold on infinitely branching arenas, yielding new non-trivial type isomorphisms in a variant of our language with natural numbers

    Urine Proteome Analysis May Allow Noninvasive Differential Diagnosis of Diabetic Nephropathy

    AbstractObjective: Chronic renal insufficiency and/or proteinuria in type 2 diabetes may stem from chronic renal diseases (CKD) other than classic diabetic nephropathy (DN) in over one third of cases. We interrogated urine proteomic profiles generated by SELDI-TOF/MS with the aim to isolate a set of biomarkers able to reliably identify biopsy-proven DN and to establish a stringent correlation with the different patterns of renal injury. Research design and methods: Ten mug urine proteins from 190 subjects [20 healthy subjects (HS), 20 normoalbuminuric (NAD) and 18 microalbuminuric (MICRO) diabetic patients, and 132 patients with biopsy-proven nephropathy (65 DN, 10 diabetics with non-diabetic CKD (nd-CKD) and 57 non-diabetic patients with CKD)] were run by CM10 ProteinChip array and analysed by supervised learning methods (CART analysis). Results: The classification model correctly identified 75% NAD, 87.5% MICRO and 87.5% DN when applied to a blinded testing set. Most importantly, it was able to reliably differentiate DN from nd-CKD in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Among the best predictors of the classification model, we identified and validated 2 proteins, ubiquitin and ss2-microglobulin. Conclusions: Our data suggest the presence of a specific urine proteomic signature able to reliably identify type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic glomerulosclerosis

    A Serum Resistin and Multicytokine Inflammatory Pathway Is Linked With and Helps Predict All-cause Death in Diabetes

    Context: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) shows a high mortality rate, partly mediated by atherosclerotic plaque instability. Discovering novel biomarkers may help identify high-risk patients who would benefit from more aggressive and specific managements. We recently described a serum resistin and multicytokine inflammatory pathway (REMAP), including resistin, interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha, that is associated with cardiovascular disease.Objective: We investigated whether REMAP is associated with and improves the prediction of mortality in T2D.Methods: A REMAP score was investigated in 3 cohorts comprising 1528 patients with T2D (409 incident deaths) and in 59 patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA; 24 deaths). Plaques were classified as unstable/stable according to the modified American Heart Association atherosclerosis classification.Results: REMAP was associated with all-cause mortality in each cohort and in all 1528 individuals (fully adjusted hazard ratio [HR] for 1 SD increase=1.34, P&lt;.001). In CEA patients, REMAP was associated with mortality (HR=1.64, P=.04) and a modest change was observed when plaque stability was taken into account (HR=1.58; P=.07). REMAP improved discrimination and reclassification measures of both Estimation of Mortality Risk in Type 2 Diabetic Patients and Risk Equations for Complications of Type 2 Diabetes, well-established prediction models of mortality in T2D (P&lt;.05-&lt;.001).Conclusion: REMAP is independently associated with and improves predict all-cause mortality in T2D; it can therefore be used to identify high-risk individuals to be targeted with more aggressive management. Whether REMAP can also identify patients who are more responsive to IL-6 and IL-1 beta monoclonal antibodies that reduce cardiovascular burden and total mortality is an intriguing possibility to be tested
