Prediction of thickness limits of ideal polar ultrathin films
Competition between electronic and atomic reconstruction is a constantly
recurring theme in transition-metal oxides. We use density functional theory
calculations to study this competition for a model system consisting of a thin
film of the polar, infinite-layer structure ACuO2 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) grown on a
nonpolar, perovskite SrTiO3 substrate. A transition from the bulk planar
structure to a chain-type thin film accompanied by substantial changes to the
electronic structure is predicted for a SrCuO2 film fewer than five unit cells
thick. An analytical model explains why atomic reconstruction becomes more
favorable than electronic reconstruction as the film becomes thinner, and
suggests that similar considerations should be valid for other polar films
Beam energy dependence of Hanbury-Brown-Twiss radii from a blast-wave model
The beam energy dependence of correlation lengths (the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss
radii) is calculated by using a blast-wave model and the results are comparable
with those from RHIC-STAR beam energy scan data as well as the LHC-ALICE
measurements. A set of parameter for the blast-wave model as a function of beam
energy under study are obtained by fit to the HBT radii at each energy point.
The transverse momentum dependence of HBT radii is presented with the extracted
parameters for Au + Au collision at 200 GeV and for Pb+Pb
collisions at 2.76 TeV. From our study one can learn that particle emission
duration can not be ignored while calculating the HBT radii with the same
parameters. And tuning kinetic freeze-out temperature in a range will result in
system lifetime changing in the reverse direction as it is found in RHIC-STAR
experiment measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
Cervical Cancer-Associated Human Papillomavirus 16 E7 Oncoprotein Inhibits Induction of Anti-Cancer Immunity by a CD4+ T Cell Dependent Mechanism
Attempts to develop therapeutic vaccines against cervical cancer have been proven difficult. One of the major causes of the failure is due to the use of the wrong mouse models based on transplantable tumours in testing the efficacy of vaccines. Now that a transgenic epithelial mouse model has been developed to closely mimic cervical cancer, the mechanisms needed to eliminate this type of cancer could be studied. The E7 oncoprotein of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most expressed HPV protein in cervical cancers and its continuous production is essential to maintain the cancerous state and therefore the obvious target in the development of vaccines. Skin grafts expressing the HPV 16 E7 protein (E7 autografts) are not spontaneously rejected from an MHC matched immunocompetent host. Interestingly, simultaneous placement of an MHC mismatched skin (allograft) next to an E7 autograft results in the E7 autograft rejection. However when the allograft also expresses E7, the E7 autograft is rejected more slowly. Autograft rejection requires CD8+ T cells, and is accelerated by removal of CD4+ T cells after placement of the E7 expressing allograft, suggesting induction of an E7 specific CD4+ regulatory T cell population by the E7 expressing allograft. This observation may have implications in designing effective vaccines and immunotherapy against cervical cancers in women
Enhanced heat transport by turbulent two-phase Rayleigh-B\'enard convection
We report measurements of turbulent heat-transport in samples of ethane
(CH) heated from below while the applied temperature difference straddled the liquid-vapor co-existance curve . When the sample
top temperature decreased below , droplet condensation occurred
and the latent heat of vaporization provided an additional heat-transport
mechanism.The effective conductivity increased linearly with
decreasing , and reached a maximum value that was an
order of magnitude larger than the single-phase . As
approached the critical pressure, increased dramatically even
though vanished. We attribute this phenomenon to an enhanced
droplet-nucleation rate as the critical point is approached.Comment: 4 gages, 6 figure
