NATURE OF THE LATE CARBONIFEROUS TO TRIASSIC MAGMATISM ALONG THE NORTHERN MARGIN OF THE NORTH CHINA BLOCK: LINK WITH THE EVOLUTION OF THE CENTRAL ASIAN OROGEN
There are two episodes of magmatism along the northern margin of the North China block during the Late Carboniferous to Late Triassic, one at 310–250 Ma (Late Carboniferous to Permian) and the other at 235–210 Ma (Late Triassic). The former group comprises plutonic rocks (gabbro-diorite-monzodioritemonzogranite-granite), mafic to intermediate dykes (diorite to dolerite) and a few felsic volcanics (andesite to dacite). There are two episodes of magmatism along the northern margin of the North China block during the Late Carboniferous to Late Triassic, one at 310–250 Ma (Late Carboniferous to Permian) and the other at 235–210 Ma (Late Triassic). Perivascular spaces visible on magnetic resonance imaging predict subsequent delirium in older patients
BackgroundIt remains unknown whether perivascular spaces (PVS) are associated with delirium in older hospitalized patients. We aimed to determine the association between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-visible PVS and the risk of delirium in a cohort of older patients.MethodsWe consecutively recruited older patients (≥70 years) admitted to the Geriatric Department of West China Hospital between March 2016 and July 2017, and their imaging data within one year before admission were reviewed retrospectively. PVS was rated on axial T2-weighted images in the basal ganglia (BG) and centrum semiovale (CS) using the validated semiquantitative 4-point ordinal scale. Delirium was screened within 24 h of admission and three times daily thereafter, using the confusion assessment method. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the associations between PVS and delirium.ResultsAmong 114 included patients (mean age 84.3 years, 72.8% male), delirium occurred in 20 (17.5%). In patients with MRI examined within 6 months before admission, CS-PVS was found to be associated with delirium (odds ratio [OR] 3.88, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07-14.06, unadjusted; and OR 4.24, 95% CI 1.11-16.28, adjusted for age). The associations were enhanced and remained significant even after full adjustment of covariates (OR 7.16, 95% CI 1.16-44.32, adjusted for age, cognitive impairment, smoking, and Charlson Comorbidity Index). Similarly, the relationships between high CS-PVS and delirium were also strengthened after sequentially adjusting all variables of interest, with OR 4.17 (95% CI 1.04-16.73) in unadjusted model and OR 7.95 (95% CI 1.14-55.28) in fully-adjusted model. Adding CS-PVS to the established risk factors improved the risk reclassification for delirium (continuous net reclassification index 62.1%, P = 0.04; and integrated discrimination improvement 12.5%, P = 0.01).ConclusionsCS-PVS on MRI acquired 6 months earlier predicts subsequent delirium in older patients and may have clinical utility in delirium risk stratification to enable proactive interventions
The impact of food safety regulatory information intervention on enterprises’ production violations in China: a randomized intervention experiment
The prevalence of unsafe food poses a widespread challenge across numerous nations. Despite the continuous investments by the Chinese government in food safety regulation, the condition of food safety in China is still not ideal and requires substantial enhancements. Cost-effective, information-based strategies are essential for the effective management of food safety hazards. In this research, we established an extensive database of food enterprises with documented violations and carried out a randomized intervention trial to assess the effects of regulatory information interventions on the decrease of production violations in these enterprises. The findings reveal that interventions based on food safety regulatory information were instrumental in diminishing production violations among food enterprises and had spillover effects within a given geographic area. It is important to note that the impact of the intervention was delayed, with noticeable results on production violations becoming apparent 6 months post-intervention. Additionally, the degree of information communication and the degree of information concern can positively moderate the reduction of food enterprises’ production violation behavior by food safety regulatory information intervention
Human Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter 1: Novel Biomarker and Prognostic Indicator for Patients with Gemcitabine-Treated Pancreatic Cancer
AIM: This article aimed to find appropriate pancreatic cancer (PC) patients to treat with Gemcitabine with better survival outcomes by detecting hENT1 levels.
METHODS: We collected surgical pathological tissues from PC patients who received radical surgery in our hospital from September 2004 to December 2014. A total of 375 PC tissues and paired adjacent nontumor tissues were employed for the construction of 4 tissue microarrays (TMAs). The quality of the 4 TMAs was examined by HE staining. We performed immunohistochemistry analysis to evaluate hENT1 expression in the TMAs. Moreover, we detected hENT1 expression level and proved the role of hENT1 in cell proliferation, drug resistance, migration and invasion in vivo and vitro.
RESULTS: The results indicated that low hENT1 expression indicated a significantly poor outcome in PC patients, including shortened DFS (21.6±2.8 months versus 36.9±4.0 months, p467 U/mL (37.9±4.1 versus 22.9±4.0, p=0.04). In the subgroup analysis, a high hENT1 expression level was related to a longer OS(39.4±4.0 versus 31.5±3.9, p=0.001) and DFS(35.7±4.0 versus 20.6±2.7; p
CONCLUSION: PC patients with high hENT1 expression have a better survival outcomes when receiving Gemcitabine. hENT1 expression can be a great prognostic indicator for PC patients to receive Gemcitabine treatment
Biomass fuel usage for cooking and frailty among older adults in China: a population-based cohort study
BackgroundAlthough outdoor air pollution is reported to have a negative effect on frailty, evidence involving household air pollution is sparse.MethodsA cohort study on older participants aged ≥65 years from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey was conducted between 2011/2012 and 2014. Household cooking fuel types were determined by self-reported questionaries, and were dichotomized into clean or biomass fuels. The frailty status was evaluated via a 46-item frailty index (FI) and the FRAIL scale, respectively. Frailty was identified if FI >0.21 or FRAIL score ≥3. Cox proportional hazards models were employed to examine the relationship between cooking fuels and incident frailty. And the effects of swapping cooking fuels on frailty risk were also explored.ResultsAmong 4,643 participants (mean age at baseline 80.9 ± 9.6 years, 53.7% male) totaling 11,340 person-years, 923 (19.9%) incident frailty was identified using FI. Compared to clean fuels, cooking with biomass fuels was intricately linked to a 23% rise in frailty risk (hazard ratio [HR] 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06–1.43). A similar association was detected between biomass cooking fuels and frailty measured by the FRAIL scale (HR 1.24, 95% CI 1.04–1.50). Sensitive analyses supported the independent relationship between biomass fuels and frailty. Stratified analyses revealed that the frailty risk was higher among town residents (HR 1.44, 95% CI 1.13–1.84) and participants not exercising regularly (HR 1.35, 95% CI 1.11–1.64). In comparison with persistent biomass fuels usage, switching to clean fuels had a trend to reduce the frailty risk, and the opposite effect was observed when swapping from clean to biomass fuels.ConclusionCooking with biomass fuels was associated with an increased frailty risk in older adults, especially amongst those living in town and those lacking regular exercise. More studies are needed to confirm our findings and to evaluate the potential benefits of reducing indoor biomass fuel usage
Therapeutic application of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes in skin wound healing
Wound healing is a complicated obstacle, especially for chronic wounds. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes may be a promising cell-free approach for treating skin wound healing. Exosomes can accelerate wound healing by attenuating inflammation, promoting angiogenesis, cell proliferation, extracellular matrix production and remodeling. However, many issues, such as off-target effects and high degradation of exosomes in wound sites need to be addressed before applying into clinical therapy. Therefore, the bioengineering technology has been introduced to modify exosomes with greater stability and specific therapeutic property. To prolong the function time and the local concentration of exosomes in the wound bed, the use of biomaterials to load exosomes emerges as a promising strategy. In this review, we summarize the biogenesis and characteristics of exosomes, the role of exosomes in wound healing, and the therapeutic applications of modified-exosomes in wound healing. The challenges and prospects of exosomes in wound healing are also discussed
Surface Morphology Evolution Mechanisms of InGaN/GaN Multiple Quantum Wells with Mixture N2/H2-Grown GaN Barrier

Ga surface-diffusion rate, stress relaxation, and H2 etching effect are found to be the main affecting factors of the surface evolution. As the percentage of H2 increases from 0 to 6.25%, Ga surface-diffusion rate and the etch effect are gradually enhanced, which is beneficial to obtaining a smooth surface with low pits density. As the H2 proportion further increases, stress relaxation and H2 over- etching effect begin to be the dominant factors, which degrade surface quality. Furthermore, the effects of surface evolution on the interface and optical properties of InGaN/GaN MQWs are also profoundly discussed. The comprehensive study on the surface evolution mechanisms herein provides both technical and theoretical support for the fabrication of high-quality InGaN/GaN heterostructures.Peer reviewe
