Millisecond Time Variations of X-Ray Binaries

The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) has found that the neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries exhibit oscillations in the range 300-1200 Hz. Persistent emission may exhibit one or both of two features. In bursts a nearly coherent pulsation is seen, which may be the rotation period of the neutron star. For some the frequency equals the difference between the two higher frequencies, suggesting a beat frequency model, but in others it is twice the difference. Similar maximum frequencies suggests that it corresponds to the Kepler orbit frequency at the minimum stable orbit or the neutron star surface, either of which would determine the neutron star masses, radii and equation of state. Theories of accretion onto black holes predict a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) related to the inner accretion disk. The two microquasar black hole candidates (BHCs) have exhibited candidates for this or related frequencies.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in the proceedings of IAU Symposium 188: The Hot Univers

Effect of ischemia on the canine large bowel: A comparison with the small intestine

Mucosal injury caused by ischemia and reperfusion has been well documented with the small intestine, but little is known about the colon. In the present study, the effect of warm and cold ischemia on the canine colon was studied and compared to that on the small intestine. After in situ flushing, the small intestine and the colon from six beagle dogs were removed and stored for 0.5, 1.5, and 3 hr at 37°C (warm ischemia) or for 1, 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hr at 4°C (cold ischemia). Electrophysiology, permeability, biochemistry, and histopathology of the specimens at each ischemic period and after reperfusion in the Ussing chamber were determined. Warm and cold ischemia induced duration-dependent suppression of electrophysiology in both organs, but the colonic mucosa retained higher activity of absorptive enterocytes and cryptic cells than the small intestine. Only the colon showed increased permeability of FITC-conjugated Dextran from the mucosal surface to the submucosal layer after prolonged ischemia. Changes in adenine nucleotides and purine catabolites were not markedly different between the organs. Histopathologic abnormalities during ischemia and after reperfusion were more serious with the small intestine than with the colon. Compared to warm ischemia, hypothermia lessened or delayed these morphofunctional derangements in both organs, which became universally worsened after reperfusion. Colonic mucosa receives morphofunctional derangements from ischemia and reperfusion, but the severity of the damage was much less severe in the colon than in the small intestine

Study of Asymptotic Free Scalar Field Theories from Adaptive Perturbation Method

We focus on the behavior of (2+1)d λϕ4\lambda\phi^4 and (5+1)d λϕ3\lambda\phi^3 or λϕ3\lambda|\phi|^3 theories in different regimes and compare the results obtained from the adaptive perturbation method with those obtained from lattice simulation. These theories are simple models that exhibit asymptotic freedom, which is a property that is also observed in more complex theories such as QCD, which describes the strong interaction between quarks and gluons. Asymptotic freedom is an important feature of these theories because it allows for a perturbative treatment of interactions at high energies. However, the standard perturbation scheme breaks down in the presence of strong interactions, and the adaptive perturbation method, which involves resuming the Feynman diagrams, is more suitable for studying these interactions. Our research involves comparing the perturbation result to lattice simulation. In the case of the ϕ3\phi^3 theory, there is no stable vacuum, so we explore evidence from the ϕ3|\phi|^3 theory instead. Our results appear to show that resummation improves the strong coupling result for both the λϕ4\lambda\phi^4 and λϕ3\lambda|\phi|^3 theories. Additionally, we improve the resummation method for the three-point coupling vertex and study the RG flow to analyze the resummation contribution and theoretical properties.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, minor change
