Improved Synthesis of 5-methylbenz(a)anthracene
A revised synthesis of 5-methylbenz(a)anthracene is reported. It involves only three simple and convenient steps starting from a commercially available compound, and gives a 82% overall yield. Bromination of 5-methylbenz(a)anthracene with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) in carbon tetrachloride furnishes 5-bromomethylbenz(a)anthracene in a 92% yield. When bromination is carried out using dimethylformamide as the solvent, 7-bromo-5-methylbenz(a)anthracene is formed as the exclusive product
Semiquantitative Infrared Analysis of Diketones and Anhydrides in a Reaction Mixture
The ozonolysis of a hydroxymethylene ketone yields a mixture of diketone and anhydride. Treatment of hydroxymethylene camphor with ozone affords, in addition to the expected camphor quinone, a surprisingly large amount of camphoric anhydride (56%) via Baeyer-Villager reaction. Use of infrared absorption to analyze the relative amounts of camphor quinone and camphoric anhydride in a reaction mixture was studied by comparing peak heights of their carbonyl stretching bands
Single Stranded DNA Induced Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles
The binding affinity of single stranded DNA (ssDNA) for gold nanoparticle surface is studied in this work. The data indicate that the strength of interaction between ssDNA and Au particle surface is closely related to the particle size, with smaller particles (5 nm) producing the most pronounced effects. From these experimental findings, a single stranded DNA (ssDNA) based method to assimilate 13 and 5 nm gold nanoparticles was developed, and verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Preparation of PtNi Nanoparticles for the Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Methanol
Carbon supported PtNi nanoparticles were prepared by hydrazine reduction of Pt and Ni precursor salts under different conditions, namely by conventional heating (PtNi-1), by prolonged reaction at room temperature (PtNi-2) and by microwave assisted reduction (PtNi-3). The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, EDX, XPS and TEM and used as electrocatalysts in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) reactions. Investigations into the mechanism of PtNi nanoparticle formation revealed that platinum nanoparticle seeding was essential for the formation of the bimetallic nanoparticles. The average particle size of PtNi prepared by microwave irradiation was the lowest, in the range of 2.9 – 5.8 nm. The relative rates of electrooxidation of methanol at room temperature as measured by cyclic voltammetry showed an inverse relationship between catalytic activity and particle size in the following order PtNi-1 < PtNi-2 < PtNi-3.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Composition of Arkansas Grapes During Maturation
Changes in organic acid and glucose content during maturation and ripening of grapes grown in Arkansas in 1973 are shown for four French hybrid varieties, S5279, S10878, SV23- 657, and S13053, and for four rotundifolia varieties, Scuppernong, Tarheel, Fry, and Magoon. In all varieties the concentrations of malates and tartrates were highest in the early stages of berry growth after veraison. During ripening the titratable acidity decreased and Balling and pH measurements increased. Although varieties reached maturity on different dates, changes in parameters followed similar curves typical for grapes of the species but occurring over a short period (Johnson and Nagel 1976, Winkler 1970). Rotundifolia varieties showed unacceptable Balling-acid ratios as well as irregular maturation progress in the study period
Catecholborane Reductions of Ditosylhydrozones to the Corresponding Methylene Derivatives
The smooth deoxygenation of diketones via the Catecholborane reduction of the corresponding ditosylhydrzaones is described. The reductions occur under mild conditions and are suitable for sensitive compounds
Guarding art galleries by guarding witnesses
Let P be a simple polygon. We de ne a witness set W to be a set of points su
h that if any (prospective) guard set G guards W, then it is guaranteed that G guards P . We show that not all polygons admit a nite witness set. If a fi nite minimal witness set exists, then it cannot contain any witness in the interior of P ; all witnesses must lie on the boundary of P , and there
an be at most one witness in the interior of any edge. We give an algorithm to compute a minimal witness set for P in O(n2 log n) time, if such a set exists, or to report the non-existence within the same time bounds. We also outline an algorithm that uses a witness set for P to test whether a (prospective) guard set sees all points in P
Establishment of an arabinose-inducible system in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
A pBBad22T-derived conditioned arabinose (Ara)-inducible expression system was evaluated in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (an opportunistic pathogen and has gained increasing attention as a cause of healthcare-associated infection). S. maltophilia cannot grow well when Ara is the sole available carbon source. The induction kinetic study, optimal inducer concentration determination, and depletion experiment were performed by using a xylE gene fusion construct, pBxylE, to monitor the expression of pBBad22T in S. maltophilia. For induction survey, the expression of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23O), encoded by xylE gene, continuously increases during an 8-h induced course and can be modulated by different inducer concentrations. The applied induction condition of pBBad22T in S. maltophilia is the inducer concentration ranging from 0.1% to 0.5% for an induction time of 4 h. For repression evaluation, the C23O expression is rapidly turned off within 30 min after the removal of Ara. Accordingly, the established Ara-inducible system can provide a convenient tool for the study of S. maltophilia
