    Spontaneous Subtle Expression Detection and Recognition based on Facial Strain

    Optical strain is an extension of optical flow that is capable of quantifying subtle changes on faces and representing the minute facial motion intensities at the pixel level. This is computationally essential for the relatively new field of spontaneous micro-expression, where subtle expressions can be technically challenging to pinpoint. In this paper, we present a novel method for detecting and recognizing micro-expressions by utilizing facial optical strain magnitudes to construct optical strain features and optical strain weighted features. The two sets of features are then concatenated to form the resultant feature histogram. Experiments were performed on the CASME II and SMIC databases. We demonstrate on both databases, the usefulness of optical strain information and more importantly, that our best approaches are able to outperform the original baseline results for both detection and recognition tasks.     A preliminary study: Does relationship closeness with grandchildren correlate with the quality of life and physical health of Malaysian Chinese elderly?

In the quantitative study, a total of 97 Chinese grandparents who are primary caregivers were recruited to examine the relations of relationship closeness, quality of life and physical health. Correlational analysis revealed that grandparent-grandchildren relationship closeness positively correlated with self-rated quality of life and physical health of the grandparents. In the qualitative interview, grandmothers (n = four Chinese grandmothers) who are primary caregivers were recruited to share their experience in taking care of grandchildren. Findings from the thematic analysis revealed that all grandmothers have a close relationship with their grandchildren. In specific, they are happy with the companionship of grandchildren even though they may feel physically tired in taking care of grandchildren. This preliminary study on skipped generation family provides insights into understanding the contribution of relationship closeness with grandchildren on the perceived quality of life and physical health of Malaysian grandparents who are the primary caregiver to their grandchildren

    Assessment of rainfall pattern and future change for Kelantan River Basin, Malaysia using statistically downscaled local climate models

    Climate change has been discussed frequently in recent decades, and it has increased the probability of extreme flood occurrence. This study aims to provide an analysis of future rainfall patterns and flood occurrences specifically for the Kelantan River Basin which is identified as one of flood prone areas in Malaysia. The study area was divided into five regions of the Kelantan River Basin,-Kota Bharu (Northern), Kuala Krai (Center), Pos Lebir (Southeastern), Pos Hua (Southwestern) and Pos Gob (Northwestern). The historical rainfall data (1986-2019) was then retrieved from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) based on the five regions. The statistical approach was applied to downscaled climate model data from the CanESM2 GCM forced by the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5. The reliability assessment using a Cronbach’s Alpha, Linear Regression and Pearson Correlation results show that local climates (2006-2019) forced by RCP4.5 have a similar trend to historical rainfall within the same period. The spatial analysis outcomes showed that the northeastern region of the Kelantan River Basin received its highest average annual rainfall (5,000 mm) in 1990 and caused severe flooding in the area. However, there is a significant change of rainfall pattern in all regions, with a steady increase in annual rainfall in the southwestern region (2021-2100)

    MOAP-1 Mediates Fas-Induced Apoptosis in Liver by Facilitating tBid Recruitment to Mitochondria

    SummaryFas apoptotic signaling regulates diverse physiological processes. Acute activation of Fas signaling triggers massive apoptosis in liver. Upon Fas receptor stimulation, the BH3-only protein Bid is cleaved into the active form, tBid. Subsequent tBid recruitment to mitochondria, which is facilitated by its receptor MTCH2 at the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM), is a critical step for commitment to apoptosis via the effector proteins Bax or Bak. MOAP-1 is a Bax-binding protein enriched at the OMM. Here, we show that MOAP-1-deficient mice are resistant to Fas-induced hepatocellular apoptosis and lethality. In the absence of MOAP-1, mitochondrial accumulation of tBid is markedly impaired. MOAP-1 binds to MTCH2, and this interaction appears necessary for MTCH2 to engage tBid. These findings reveal a role for MOAP-1 in Fas signaling in the liver by promoting MTCH2-mediated tBid recruitment to mitochondria

    Effective recognition of facial micro-expressions with video motion magnification

    Facial expression recognition has been intensively studied for decades, notably by the psychology community and more recently the pattern recognition community. What is more challenging, and the subject of more recent research, is the problem of recognizing subtle emotions exhibited by so-called micro-expressions. Recognizing a micro-expression is substantially more challenging than conventional expression recognition because these micro-expressions are only temporally exhibited in a fraction of a second and involve minute spatial changes. Until now, work in this field is at a nascent stage, with only a few existing micro-expression databases and methods. In this article, we propose a new micro-expression recognition approach based on the Eulerian motion magnification technique, which could reveal the hidden information and accentuate the subtle changes in micro-expression motion. Validation of our proposal was done on the recently proposed CASME II dataset in comparison with baseline and state-of-the-art methods. We achieve a good recognition accuracy of up to 75.30% by using leave-one-out cross validation evaluation protocol. Extensive experiments on various factors at play further demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach

    Advancement on sustained antiviral ocular drug delivery for herpes simplex virus keratitis: recent update on potential investigation

    The eyes are the window to the world and the key to communication, but they are vulnerable to multitudes of ailments. More serious than is thought, corneal infection by herpes simplex viruses (HSVs) is a prevalent yet silent cause of blindness in both the paediatric and adult population, especially if immunodeficient. Globally, there are 1.5 million new cases and forty thousand visual impairment cases reported yearly. The Herpetic Eye Disease Study recommends topical antiviral as the front-line therapy for HSV keratitis. Ironically, topical eye solutions undergo rapid nasolacrimal clearance, which necessitates oral drugs but there is a catch of systemic toxicity. The hurdle of antiviral penetration to reach an effective concentration is further complicated by drugs’ poor permeability and complex layers of ocular barriers. In this current review, novel delivery approaches for ocular herpetic infection, including nanocarriers, prodrugs, and peptides are widely investigated, with special focus on advantages, challenges, and recent updates on in situ gelling systems of ocular HSV infections. In general congruence, the novel drug delivery systems play a vital role in prolonging the ocular drug residence time to achieve controlled release of therapeutic agents at the application site, thus allowing superior ocular bioavailability yet fewer systemic side effects. Moreover, in situ gel functions synergistically with nanocarriers, prodrugs, and peptides. The findings support that novel drug delivery systems have potential in ophthalmic drug delivery of antiviral agents, and improve patient convenience when prolonged and chronic topical ocular deliveries are intended

    The high usage of fossil fuel to produce energy for the increasing demand of energy has been the primary culprit behind global warming. Renewable energies such as solar energy can be a solution in preventing the situation from worsening. Solar energy can be harnessed using available system such as solar thermal cogeneration systems. However, for the system to function smoothly and continuously, knowledge on solar radiation’s intensity several minutes in advance are required. Though there exist various solar radiation forecast models, most of the existing models requires high computational time. In this research, principal component analysis were applied on the meteorological data collected in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur to reduce the dimension of the data. Dominant factors obtained from the analysis is expected to be useful for the development of solar radiation forecast model

    Life cycle of oil palm bunch moth, Tirathaba mundella walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) reared under laboratory conditions on artificial diet

    Tirathaba mundella Walker is an important pest in many oil palm plantations especially those established on peatland. The life cycle of T. mundella has not been described in detail despite its economic importance. This study aimed to describe the bionomic characteristics of T. mundella, rearing on an artificial diet, at 25 oC. The duration of a complete metamorphosis cycle of T. mundella was about 51.63 ± 3.80 days. The incubation period was the shortest (3.33 ± 0.80 days.), The most detrimental stage of the pest to oil palm is at larval stage, which took 33.90 ± 2.60 days before pupating. The pupal period took about 5 to 11 days with a mean ± SD period of 8.53 ± 1.48 days. The average of the adult’s longevity was about 6.05 ± 1.81 days. There is no statistical difference between the duration of male and female longevity. Adult male and female moths reared in captivity feeded with 10% sucrose solution would mate readily and produce fertile eggs. The mean preoviposition period were 4 days. Successful of rearing T. mundella using artificial diet under laboratory conditions promises laboratory assessment for pesticide development which is less tedious and time consuming than conventional field experiments
