The dynamics of interleukin-6level in HIV-infected patients with herpes zoster
Interleukin-6 plays a central role in antiviral immunity. However, the function of this cytokine in the pathogenesis of herpes zoster is unknown. The objective of this study was todeterminethe dynamicsof serum interleukin-6 level in HIV-infected patients with herpes zoster. 55 patients with herpes zoster (30 HIV-positive and 25 HIV-negative) were included. Serum interleukin-6 levels were measured before acyclovir treatment, on the 3rd day of treatment and after healing of skin lesions. The clinical course and dynamics of laboratory data were also evaluated. The study showed that elevated serum levels of interleukin-6 were associated with HIV-positive status, severity of rash, fever anddecreaseof CD4-lymphocytes. Levels of interleukin-6 in HIV-infected patients were significantly reduced during herpes zoster treatment and reached the level of HIVnegative cohort.Interleukin-6 levels in complicated course of herpes zoster in HIV-infected patients with low CD4-lymphocyte count (less than 350 cells/ml) were significantly higher compared to levels in uncomplicated course of the disease
Mathematical modeling of solid cancer growth with angiogenesis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cancer arises when within a single cell multiple malfunctions of control systems occur, which are, broadly, the system that promote cell growth and the system that protect against erratic growth. Additional systems within the cell must be corrupted so that a cancer cell, to form a mass of any real size, produces substances that promote the growth of new blood vessels. Multiple mutations are required before a normal cell can become a cancer cell by corruption of multiple growth-promoting systems.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We develop a simple mathematical model to describe the solid cancer growth dynamics inducing angiogenesis in the absence of cancer controlling mechanisms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The initial conditions supplied to the dynamical system consist of a perturbation in form of pulse: The origin of cancer cells from normal cells of an organ of human body. Thresholds of interacting parameters were obtained from the steady states analysis. The existence of two equilibrium points determine the strong dependency of dynamical trajectories on the initial conditions. The thresholds can be used to control cancer.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Cancer can be settled in an organ if the following combination matches: better fitness of cancer cells, decrease in the efficiency of the repairing systems, increase in the capacity of sprouting from existing vascularization, and higher capacity of mounting up new vascularization. However, we show that cancer is rarely induced in organs (or tissues) displaying an efficient (numerically and functionally) reparative or regenerative mechanism.</p
Abstract.Morphological response of the tumor was investigated after sonodynamic chemotherapy during distal gamma-therapy (DGT) in patients with cancer of the oral cavity. Sixty-one patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (n=31) received DGT and local ultrasound treatment (0,88 MHz±0,33% and I=1,0Вm/cm2) with 5 mg of platidiam and group 2 (n=30) received only DGT. Biopsies were investigated by standard morphological and immunohistochemical analysis after achieving total dose of radiation 40 Gy. In the main group the mass of stroma increased 1,9 times after starting of treatment and 1,6 times in comparison with the control group, mitotic activity of the cells decreased 3,9 and 1,9 times respectively, and index of parenchymal damage was 2,4 times higher in the main group than in the control. There was fibrosis and focuses of cells with “cells – shadows” with dystrophic changes of the nucleus and cytoplasma. There was a high index of Ki-67 proliferating activity (60-75%) and high apoptotic index (50-65%) of all cell layers. The rate of Ki-67 and gene p53 decreased 1,3 and 1,5 times respectively after treatment. In specimens of the main group basal layer cells expressed Ki-67 and p53 in 10-15% of area and didn’t differ from normal values. The rate of KI-67 and expression of p53 gene decreased 7.1 and 6.5 after treatment. Sonodynamic chemotherapy contributes to the suppression of the biological aggressiveness of the tumor, provides a much more pronounced antitumor effect compared to the effect of ionizing radiation alone.
Efficiency of Organelle Capture by Microtubules as a Function of Centrosome Nucleation Capacity: General Theory and the Special Case of Polyspermia
Transport of organelles along microtubules is essential for the cell metabolism and morphogenesis. The presented analysis derives the probability that an organelle of a given size comes in contact with the microtubule aster. The question is asked how this measure of functionality of the microtubule aster is controlled by the centrosome. A quantitative model is developed to address this question. It is shown that for the given set of cellular parameters, such as size and total tubulin content, a centrosome nucleation capacity exists that maximizes the probability of the organelle capture. The developed general model is then applied to the capture of the female pronucleus by microtubules assembled on the sperm centrosome, following physiologically polyspermic fertilization. This application highlights an unintuitive reflection of nonlinearity of the nucleated polymerization of the cellular pool of tubulin. The prediction that the sperm centrosome should lower its nucleation capacity in the face of the competition from the other sperm is a stark illustration of the new optimality principle. Overall, the model calls attention to the capabilities of the centrosomal pathway of regulation of the transport-related functionality of the microtubule cytoskeleton. It establishes a quantitative and conceptual framework that can guide experiment design and interpretation
Turkisms in the Translated Text (the case-study of “Jamila” by Ch. Aitmatov)
To render the cultural identity and preserve of unique color scheme of the foreign language has always been of keen interest for translators. From this point of view, the analysis of Ch. Aitmatov’s short stories and novels about the life in Kyrgyzstan translation into English is of great importance for the theory and practice of translation. As the author wrote equally well both in Russian and Kyrgyz, his works are deeply permeated with bilingual culture
