Hybrid genetic algorithm based on bin packing strategy for the unrelated parallel workgroup scheduling problem
The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.In this paper we focus on an unrelated parallel workgroup scheduling problem
where each workgroup is composed of a number of personnel with similar work
skills which has eligibility and human resource constraints. The most difference
from the general unrelated parallel machine scheduling with resource constraints
is that one workgroup can process multiple jobs at a time as long as the resources
are available, which means that a feasible scheduling scheme is impossible to get
if we consider the processing sequence of jobs only in time dimension. We
construct this problem as an integer programming model with the objective of
minimizing makespan. As it is incapable to get the optimal solution in the
acceptable time for the presented model by exact algorithm, meta-heuristic is
considered to design. A pure genetic algorithm based on special coding design is
proposed firstly. Then a hybrid genetic algorithm based on bin packing strategy is
further developed by the consideration of transforming the single workgroup
scheduling to a strip-packing problem. Finally, the proposed algorithms, together
with exact approach, are tested at different size of instances. Results demonstrate
that the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm shows the effective performance

The file attached to this record is the Publisher's final version. An operational ability assessment system for older adults is of great help to
address health and social challenges for ageing. In this paper, the main problems
in currently available ADL and ability evaluation systems have been analyzed. The
basic principles to build an index system for disability elders evaluation have been
put forwarded. Then,an improved Barthel index system for ADL evaluation and a
new older adults ability evaluation system consisted of 4 first-level indexes and 14
secondary indexes based on experts’ opinion and the ability assessment system for
older adults by Ministry of Civil Affairs of China have been built. The grey
clustering model based on end-point mixed triangular possibility function has been
introduced. And three living examples of adults’ disability evaluation have been
conducted. It is confirmed clearly that the three older adults belong to different
categories of "severe disability", "mild disability", and "ability passable"
respectively. The research results can be used as reference for government to
formulate the elderly-care policies, to run and allocate the elderly-care resources,
as well as reference for various nursing or elderly-care institutions

Exploring Grey Systems Theory-Based Methods and Applications in Sustainability Studies: A Systematic Review Approach
In recent years, there have been international movements advocating more sustainable societies, and as a result of such movements, a remarkably important sub-branch has been shaped in systems studies called sustainability. It would be vital to propose methods that could deal with inherent complexities and uncertainties in such systems. Grey systems theory (GST) represents a nascent method that could help to solve complexities in the face of multifaceted problems, uncertainty, and complexity in systems, and the theory could considerably contribute to sustainability studies. The present study sought to fill a gap and provide an updated review of the literature on the roles and impacts of GST-based methods in sustainability studies as one of the most significant areas of exploring economic, social and environmental systems. Primarily, the theoretical foundations of sustainability and GST were briefly reviewed. Next, by categorizing the studies conducted in the literature on sustainability studies, GST-based methods used in such studies were identified. Finally, the advantages, effects and functions of GST-based theories and their applications in sustainability studies were explicated. The papers found in this systematic review were searched on such databases as Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, as published from 2010 up to the first three months of 2020, based on these keywords: grey relation or grey relational, grey model, grey system or grey systems, grey prediction, grey control, grey incidence, grey cluster, grey decision, grey input-output. The total number of publications found on all of the databases was 446, although (following a more meticulous investigation of the publications) 145 ones were used for the comprehensive analysis. The 10 different areas in which GST was used to explore sustainability in the publications were: sustainability assessment, industrial sustainability, urban sustainability, energy sustainability, sustainability development, businesses sustainability, agricultural sustainability, sustainable products, tourism sustainability, social sustainability. The results revealed that complexity, uncertainty, and inaccessibility of a large set of data and initial statistical distributions led researchers to rely on GST in sustainability studies, and that the applied areas of GST in terms of sustainability issues had some features in common, including linguistic variables, long-term projects, technological demands, conflicting goals, and uncertainty. Moreover, compared to other methods used to deal with uncertainty, GST did not require the formation of an extensive databank of classified rules and was more practical and efficient in sustainability calculations (as complex systems) with fewer numerical calculations. Ignoring systematic approaches, causal relations, cause-effect loops, and dynamic feedback was the missing link in the application of GST in sustainability studies as complex economic, social and environmental systems
Forecasting China's energy demand and self-sufficiency rate by grey forecasting model and Markov model
This paper applies novel models to forecast the developing trends of China’s energy production and consumption under the influence of China’s energy saving policy. An optimized single variable discrete grey forecasting model is adopted to forecast the total amount of energy production and consumption while a novel Markov approach based on quadratic programming model is proposed to forecast the trends of energy production and consumption structures. The proposed models are used to simulate China’s energy production and consumption during 2006–2011 and forecast its trends in 2015 and 2020. Results demonstrate that proposed models can effectively simulate and forecast the total amounts and structures of energy production and consumption. And by comparing with regression model, results show proposed model is a little better than regression in simulating and forecasting the case. Although the growth rate of energy consumption in China has decreased under the energy saving policy, total amount of energy consumption and the proportions of natural gas and other energies keep growing while the self-sufficiency rate of crude oil and natural gas continues to drop
Exploring the Challenges to Sustainable Development from the Perspective of Grey Systems Theory
Today’s challenges to sustainability are explored through a complex combination of interdisciplinary topics that explore various interactions between economic, social, and environmental systems that further contribute to existing uncertainties. Solving complex/dynamic sustainability constraints does not demand exclusively technical and practical methods, as it is equally important to have a profound conceptual understanding of the origins of such challenges. The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges to the sustainable development process from the perspective of the philosophy of grey systems theory (GST). GST considers inherent defects and shortcomings in human understanding/knowledge and identifies the roots of uncertainty. The study concentrates on the sustainable development process, highlighting the ways in which GST explains the causes and sources of uncertainty in this process. It is emphasized that sustainability cannot be achieved without intentional human intervention, and that international collaboration is vital in solving sustainability problems. Uncertainty and challenges to sustainable development stem from human grey understanding and knowledge. This problem makes it difficult for humans to understand and model dynamicity, to strike a balance between different spheres of science, and to have an objective view of reality due to the dependence of knowledge on thinking paradigms and values. These shortcomings ultimately bring about value conflicts, different understandings of risks, and impediments to international collaboration and agreement. Finally, the study explains that uncertainty arises from incomplete understanding and grey knowledge, and that uncertainty undermines the prediction of outcomes. Furthermore, delays inherent in interactions and the impacts of diverse systems on the world increase uncertainty and complicate decision- and policymaking in improvement projects. In their efforts to implement their decisions and policies, humans also encounter various limitations in terms of their capacities, resources, and facilities. The application of GST-based approaches to the operational area is also discussed
