Beyond Gotcha: Blogs as a Space for Debate
The mainstream media and critics of Web 2.0’s "cult of the amateur" often suggest that blogs and citizen journalism will never replace their mainstream counterparts because they "don’t break stories". Notwithstanding the fundamental furphy – who ever said anything about "replacing" the MSM anyway? – there is some truth in this. It goes without saying that most bloggers don’t have the resources, pulling power or proximity to the pollies to do much original political reporting: this is something that most sensible public affairs bloggers concede. (Though how often the mainstream media really break stories – as against exploiting deliberate, calculated ‘leaks’ from party spinsters – is a separate question.

Understanding child and parent perceptions of barriers influencing children’s active school travel
Background
Physical activity plays a fundamental role in the health and well-being of children. Walking is the most common form of physical activity and the journey to and from school provides an opportunity for children to be active every day. This study examines how child and parent perceptions of barriers to active school travel influences children’s behaviour. Methods
Participants were recruited from 48 elementary schools in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The study sample includes 1296 children (ages 9–14 years) who live within walking distance of their school, defined as 1.6 km network distance. Chi-square analysis examined differences between child and parent perceptions of barriers to active school travel. Logistic regression models examined how parent and child perceptions of barriers influence active school travel behaviour, while controlling for key intrapersonal, interpersonal, and physical environment factors. Results
The results indicate that there are significant differences in how parents and children perceive barriers to active school travel. Model results find older children, children without siblings, households with no vehicles, and children who live closer to school are most likely to use active school travel. Parent perceptions of barriers are found to have a greater influence on children’s active school travel behaviour than children’s perceptions. Different perceptions of barriers influence active school travel to school compared to returning home from school. Conclusions
Child and parent perceptions of barriers to active school travel differ and have different impacts on children’s travel behaviour. Understanding how child and parent perceptions of barriers differ can help policymakers and practitioners develop specialized interventions aimed at increasing children’s use of active school travel and children’s overall physical activity. Interventions used to promote active school travel should focus on safety, as well as perceptions of distance to break parental habits of routinely driving their children to school. Overall, this study highlights the importance of considering both child and parent perceptions to create a safe and accessible environment to allow for an increase in active school travel behaviour among elementary school children who live within walking distance of their school
UW-BHI at MEDIQA 2019: An Analysis of Representation Methods for Medical Natural Language Inference
Recent advances in distributed language modeling have led to large
performance increases on a variety of natural language processing (NLP) tasks.
However, it is not well understood how these methods may be augmented by
knowledge-based approaches. This paper compares the performance and internal
representation of an Enhanced Sequential Inference Model (ESIM) between three
experimental conditions based on the representation method: Bidirectional
Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), Embeddings of Semantic
Predications (ESP), or Cui2Vec. The methods were evaluated on the Medical
Natural Language Inference (MedNLI) subtask of the MEDIQA 2019 shared task.
This task relied heavily on semantic understanding and thus served as a
suitable evaluation set for the comparison of these representation methods

Managed Racial Capitalism: Understanding the Bureaucratic State’s Racialized Practices in Detroit, Michigan
Public administration navigates an important place in governing in that it is multidisciplinary and focused on practice, thus all theories need to be prepared to face critique from the people. At this watershed moment of social justice, political reckoning, and revolutionary imagination, it is key that public administration contends with the racist logics driving the field and the practice. In this article, we examine the ways that the current governing system fails to account for the racialized political economy, thus reproducing the inequality inherent in that system. The paper poses two questions: 1) How does the public administration of local governments reproduce inequality? And 2) How can we rethink public administration through a system of governing that intentionally engages with and rectifies racialized practices? We argue that late-stage capitalism, manifested as neoliberalism, is always racialized. We propose a manageable possibility of community-focused engagement and deliberation
Nineteenth-Century Popular Science Magazines, Narrative, and the Problem of Historical Materiality
In his Some Reminiscences of a Lecturer, Andrew Wilson emphasizes the importance of narrative to popular science lecturing. Although Wilson promotes the teaching of science as useful knowledge in its own right, he also recognizes that the way science is taught can encourage audiences to take the subject up and read further on their own. Form, according to Wilson, should not be divorced from scientific content and lecturers should ensure that not only is their science accurate, but that it is presented in a way that will provoke curiosity and stimulate interest. This paper discusses the influence of narrative in structuring scientific objects and phenomena, and considers the consequences of such presentations for historical research. As scientific journalism necessarily weaves both its intended audience and the objects under discussion into its accounts, these texts demand that we recognize their nature as social relationships inscribed in historical objects
