    Declassification of Students With Disabilities

    Federal law states that any student suspected of having a disability must meet initial eligibility requirements in order to qualify for special education services. Moreover, an individual education program (IEP) team is required by federal law to re-evaluate each student with a disability, tri-annually, in order to assess his or her continued need for such services. The path toward initial eligibility is clearly outlined within federal legislation; however, the law does not explicate a path for declassification, or exiting, from special education services. Because of this, many students may remain labeled as a student with a disability when they may no longer require the specialized instruction or related services provided through special education. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to describe the experiences of high school special education leaders regarding declassification of students from receiving special education services. By conducting one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with seven special education leaders, the research questions helped to reveal their lived experiences as well as the processes and procedures they have utilized when discussing and determining declassification as an appropriate option for students served through special education. Additionally, the researcher’s field notes were used as a data source in order to add to the phenomenological value of the study. Respondents consistently noted specific instances of parental agreement or disagreement with the idea of declassification and additionally noted how those parental responses impacted their response to the situation, as a leader. As a result, the leaders’ reactions to a situation of declassification were shaped by the actions of the parents. Utilizing a phenomenological approach adds to the current body of literature by providing a unique lens for practitioners and policy makers to consider

    Changes in Body Condition of Hibernating Bats Support the Thrifty Female Hypothesis and Predict Consequences for Populations with White-Nose Syndrome

    White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a new disease of bats that has devastated populations in eastern North America. Infection with the fungus, Geomyces destructans, is thought to increase the time bats spend out of torpor during hibernation, leading to starvation. Little is known about hibernation in healthy, free-ranging bats and more data are needed to help predict consequences of WNS. Trade-offs presumably exist between the energetic benefits and physiological/ecological costs of torpor, leading to the prediction that the relative importance of spring energy reserves should affect an individual's use of torpor and depletion of energy reserves during winter. Myotis lucifugus mate during fall and winter but females do not become pregnant until after spring emergence. Thus, female reproductive success depends on spring fat reserves while male reproductive success does not. Consequently, females should be “thrifty” in their use of fat compared to males. We measured body condition index (BCI; mass/forearm length) of 432 M. lucifugus in Manitoba, Canada during the winter of 2009/2010. Bats were captured during the fall mating period (n = 200), early hibernation (n = 125), and late hibernation (n = 128). Adult females entered hibernation with greater fat reserves and consumed those reserves more slowly than adult males and young of the year. Consequently, adult females may be more likely than males or young of the year to survive the disruption of energy balance associated with WNS, although surviving females may not have sufficient reserves to support reproduction

    Hibernation energetics of free-ranging little brown bats

    Hibernation physiology and energy expenditure have been relatively well studied in large captive hibernators, especially rodents, but data from smaller, free-ranging hibernators are sparse. We examined variation in the hibernation patterns of free-ranging little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) using temperature-sensitive radio-transmitters. First, we aimed to test the hypothesis that age, sex and body condition affect expression of torpor and energy expenditure during hibernation. Second, we examined skin temperature to assess whether qualitative differences in the thermal properties of the hibernacula of bats, compared with the burrows of hibernating rodents, might lead to different patterns of torpor and arousal for bats. We also evaluated the impact of carrying transmitters on body condition to help determine the potential impact of telemetry studies. We observed large variation in the duration of torpor bouts within and between individuals but detected no effect of age, sex or body condition on torpor expression or estimates of energy expenditure. We observed the use of shallow torpor in the midst of periodic arousals, which may represent a unique adaptation of bats for conservation of energy during the most costly phase of hibernation. There was no difference in the body condition of hibernating bats outfitted with transmitters compared with that of control bats captured from the same hibernaculum at the same time.     Therapeutic Use of Self and Fieldwork Experience: An Exploration of the Art and Science of Occupational Therapy

    The clinical practice of occupational therapy has been described as a blend of both art and science. For occupational therapy students, Level II fieldwork experiences offer early opportunities to refine both client-centered attitudes and scientific aptitude in relationship-based caregiving. In this retrospective study, researchers examined the ability to predict final Fieldwork Performance Evaluation scores from the following non-cognitive (i.e., art) and cognitive (i.e., science) variables: ranked student responses to the Self-Assessment of Modes Questionnaire (v.II); undergraduate grade point average (GPA; cumulative and science), and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (quantitative, verbal, and analytic). Using a series of simple linear regressions, researchers analyzed data from sixty-nine master’s-level occupational therapy students. For the first Level II fieldwork experience, empathizing and empathizing-revised modes appeared to be a significant predictor with moderate, positive correlation coefficients (p=.008, r=.329; p=.01, r=.296, respectively). For the second Level II fieldwork experience, collaborating and instructing modes appeared to be significant predictors (p=.036, r= -.255; p=.037, r=.254 respectively). GPA and GRE scores were not predictive of fieldwork success. The degree to which art and science shape expectations for relationship-based client interactions during fieldwork experiences requires further investigation. However, calling attention to occupational therapy students’ preferred communication modes highlight how client interactions may be shaped to fit the students’ natural tendencies rather than the needs of the client

    Recycling and Composing at the Appalachian Center for Craft

    In summarizing our project, the 2017-2018 ESS Capstone students would like to revamp the existing recycling bins in the Appalachian Center for Craft campus along with introducing composting to the campus. After evaluating the existing recycling bins on the campus, it was decided to offer a new system of color coded bins that the Office of Sustainability could easily provide. This would replace the old bins and offer more of them to residents and other areas of the campus to provide ease of access and more incentive to recycle. Composting was introduced to the Craft Center for their on-site restaurant, The Blue Water Grille, to begin recycling their waste for future use of soil on their own grounds. This would educate residents and staff on composting and provide the campus the opportunity to be more environmentally friendly. Both projects would provide the campus with environmental benefits for almost no cost due to the Office of Sustainability providing all recycling and composting bins

    Lipoprotein-apheresis reduces circulating microparticles in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia

    Lipoprotein-apheresis (apheresis) removes LDL-cholesterol in patients with severe dyslipidemia. However, reduction is transient, indicating that the long-term cardiovascular benefits of apheresis may not solely be due to LDL removal. Microparticles (MPs) are submicron vesicles released from the plasma membrane of cells. MPs, particularly platelet-derived MPs, are increasingly being linked to the pathogenesis of many diseases. We aimed to characterize the effect of apheresis on MP size, concentration, cellular origin, and fatty acid concentration in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Plasma and MP samples were collected from 12 individuals with FH undergoing routine apheresis. Tunable resistive pulse sensing (np200) and nanoparticle tracking analysis measured a fall in MP concentration (33 and 15%, respectively; P < 0.05) pre- to post-apheresis. Flow cytometry showed MPs were predominantly annexin V positive and of platelet (CD41) origin both pre- (88.9%) and post-apheresis (88.4%). Fatty acid composition of MPs differed from that of plasma, though apheresis affected a similar profile of fatty acids in both compartments, as measured by GC-flame ionization detection. MP concentration was also shown to positively correlate with thrombin generation potential. In conclusion, we show apheresis nonselectively removes annexin V-positive platelet-derived MPs in individuals with FH. These MPs are potent inducers of coagulation and are elevated in CVD; this reduction in pathological MPs could relate to the long-term benefits of apheresis

    Social Expectations Bias Decision-Making in Uncertain Inter-Personal Situations

    Understanding the role that social cues have on interpersonal choice, and their susceptibility to contextual effects, is of core importance to models of social decision-making. Language, on the other hand, is one of the main means of communication during social interactions in our culture. The present experiments tested whether positive and negative linguistic descriptions of alleged partners in a modified Ultimatum Game biased decisions made to the same set of offers, and whether the contextual uncertainty of the game modulated this biasing effect. The results showed that in an uncertain context, the same offers were accepted with higher probability when they were preceded by positive rather than by negative valenced trait-words. Participants also accepted fair offers with higher probability than unfair offers, but this effect did not interact with the valence of the social descriptive words. In addition, the speed of the decision was affected by valence: acceptance choices were faster when they followed a positive adjective, whereas rejection responses were faster after a negative-valenced word. However, these effects were highly reduced when the uncertainty was eliminated from the game. This suggests that positive and negative relevant social information can bias decisions made to the same pieces of evidence during interpersonal interactions, but that this mainly takes place when the uncertainty associated with the choices is high

    Functional Polymorphisms in PRODH Are Associated with Risk and Protection for Schizophrenia and Fronto-Striatal Structure and Function

    PRODH, encoding proline oxidase (POX), has been associated with schizophrenia through linkage, association, and the 22q11 deletion syndrome (Velo-Cardio-Facial syndrome). Here, we show in a family-based sample that functional polymorphisms in PRODH are associated with schizophrenia, with protective and risk alleles having opposite effects on POX activity. Using a multimodal imaging genetics approach, we demonstrate that haplotypes constructed from these risk and protective functional polymorphisms have dissociable correlations with structure, function, and connectivity of striatum and prefrontal cortex, impacting critical circuitry implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Specifically, the schizophrenia risk haplotype was associated with decreased striatal volume and increased striatal-frontal functional connectivity, while the protective haplotype was associated with decreased striatal-frontal functional connectivity. Our findings suggest a role for functional genetic variation in POX on neostriatal-frontal circuits mediating risk and protection for schizophrenia

    The first myriapod genome sequence reveals conservative arthropod gene content and genome organisation in the centipede Strigamia maritima.

    Myriapods (e.g., centipedes and millipedes) display a simple homonomous body plan relative to other arthropods. All members of the class are terrestrial, but they attained terrestriality independently of insects. Myriapoda is the only arthropod class not represented by a sequenced genome. We present an analysis of the genome of the centipede Strigamia maritima. It retains a compact genome that has undergone less gene loss and shuffling than previously sequenced arthropods, and many orthologues of genes conserved from the bilaterian ancestor that have been lost in insects. Our analysis locates many genes in conserved macro-synteny contexts, and many small-scale examples of gene clustering. We describe several examples where S. maritima shows different solutions from insects to similar problems. The insect olfactory receptor gene family is absent from S. maritima, and olfaction in air is likely effected by expansion of other receptor gene families. For some genes S. maritima has evolved paralogues to generate coding sequence diversity, where insects use alternate splicing. This is most striking for the Dscam gene, which in Drosophila generates more than 100,000 alternate splice forms, but in S. maritima is encoded by over 100 paralogues. We see an intriguing linkage between the absence of any known photosensory proteins in a blind organism and the additional absence of canonical circadian clock genes. The phylogenetic position of myriapods allows us to identify where in arthropod phylogeny several particular molecular mechanisms and traits emerged. For example, we conclude that juvenile hormone signalling evolved with the emergence of the exoskeleton in the arthropods and that RR-1 containing cuticle proteins evolved in the lineage leading to Mandibulata. We also identify when various gene expansions and losses occurred.
