Multiwavelength Observations of the Second Largest Known FR II Radio Galaxy, NVSS 2146+82
We present multi-frequency VLA, multicolor CCD imaging, optical spectroscopy,
and ROSAT HRI observations of the giant FR II radio galaxy NVSS 2146+82. This
galaxy, which was discovered by the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), has an angular
extent of nearly 20' from lobe to lobe. The radio structure is normal for an FR
II source except for its large size and regions in the lobes with unusually
flat radio spectra. Our spectroscopy indicates that the optical counterpart of
the radio core is at a redshift of z=0.145, so the linear size of the radio
structure is ~4 h_50^-1 Mpc. This object is therefore the second largest FR II
known (3C 236 is ~6 h_50^-1 Mpc). Optical imaging of the field surrounding the
host galaxy reveals an excess number of candidate galaxy cluster members above
the number typically found in the field surrounding a giant radio galaxy. WIYN
HYDRA spectra of a sample of the candidate cluster members reveal that six
share the same redshift as NVSS 2146+82, indicating the presence of at least a
``rich group'' containing the FR II host galaxy. ROSAT HRI observations of NVSS
2146+82 place upper limits on the X-ray flux of 1.33 x 10^-13 ergs cm^-2 s^-1
for any hot IGM and 3.52 x 10^-14 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 for an X-ray AGN, thereby
limiting any X-ray emission at the distance of the radio galaxy to that typical
of a poor group or weak AGN. Several other giant radio galaxies have been found
in regions with overdensities of nearby galaxies, and a separate study has
shown that groups containing FR IIs are underluminous in X-rays compared to
groups without radio sources. We speculate that the presence of the host galaxy
in an optically rich group of galaxies that is underluminous in X-rays may be

Accommodating 'others'?: housing dispersed, forced migrants in the UK
Utilising insights from a qualitative study in the city of Leeds (UK), this paper considers issues related to the housing of dispersed forced migrants. The term 'dispersed forced migrants' is used here as a general label to include four groups of international migrants (i.e. refugees, asylum seekers, those with humanitarian protection status and failed asylum seekers) who have previously been dispersed, on a no choice basis, to a variety of locations across the UK under the requirements of the Immigration and Asylum Act (1999). The tiering of housing entitlement that exists within the generic population of dispersed forced migrants (a consequence of the particular socio-legal status assigned to individuals), and its role in rendering migrants susceptible to homelessness is outlined. The adequacy/standard of accommodation made available to forced migrants is also discussed. It is concluded that current arrangements fail to meet the basic housing needs of many forced migrants. Any future improvement in this situation will require a significant shift in government policy
Serendipity and the SDSS: Discovery of the Largest Known Planetary Nebula on the Sky
Investigation of spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey reveals the
presence of a region of ionized gas of >2 degrees diameter centered
approximately at alpha = 10^h 37^m delta = -00^o 18' (J2000) (Galactic
coordinates l=248, b=+48). [OIII] 4959,5007 emission is particularly strong and
emission from H-alpha and [NII] 6548,6583 is also detectable over a substantial
area on the sky. The combination of emission line ratios, the close to zero
heliocentric radial velocity and the morphology of the structure are consistent
with an identification as a very nearby planetary nebula. The proximity of the
hot, DO white dwarf PG1034+001 further strengthens this interpretation. The
object is: i) the largest planetary nebula on the sky, ii) certainly closer
than any planetary nebula other than Sh 2--216, iii) the first to be
unambiguously associated with a DO white dwarf. A parallax distance for
PG1034+001 would establish whether the structure is in fact the closest, and

Numerical loop quantum cosmology: an overview
A brief review of various numerical techniques used in loop quantum cosmology
and results is presented. These include the way extensive numerical simulations
shed insights on the resolution of classical singularities, resulting in the
key prediction of the bounce at the Planck scale in different models, and the
numerical methods used to analyze the properties of the quantum difference
operator and the von Neumann stability issues. Using the quantization of a
massless scalar field in an isotropic spacetime as a template, an attempt is
made to highlight the complementarity of different methods to gain
understanding of the new physics emerging from the quantum theory. Open
directions which need to be explored with more refined numerical methods are

Cognitive testing of physical activity and acculturation questions in recent and long-term Latino immigrants
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We ascertained the degree to which language (English versus Spanish), and residence time in the US influence responses to survey questions concerning two topics: self-reported acculturation status, and recent physical activity (PA). This topic is likely to be of general interest because of growing numbers of immigrants in countries worldwide.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We carried out qualitative (cognitive) interviews of survey items on acculturation and physical activity on 27 Latino subjects from three groups: (a) In Spanish, of those of low residence time (less than five years living in the U.S.) (n = 9); (b) In Spanish, of those of high residence time (15 or more years in the U.S) (n = 9); and (c) in English, of those of high residence time (n = 9).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were very few language translation problems; general question design defects and socio-cultural challenges to survey responses were more common. Problems were found for both acculturation and PA questions, with distinct problem types for the two question areas. Residence time/language group was weakly associated with overall frequency of problems observed: low residence time/Spanish (86%), high residence time/Spanish (67%), and English speaking groups (62%).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Standardized survey questions related to acculturation and physical activity present somewhat different cognitive challenges. For PA related questions, problems with such questions were similar regardless of subject residence time or language preference. For acculturation related questions, residence time/language or education level influenced responses to such questions. These observations should help in the interpretation of survey results for culturally diverse populations.</p
Loop Quantum Cosmology: A Status Report
The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the current state of
the art in loop quantum cosmology for three sets of audiences: young
researchers interested in entering this area; the quantum gravity community in
general; and, cosmologists who wish to apply loop quantum cosmology to probe
modifications in the standard paradigm of the early universe. An effort has
been made to streamline the material so that, as described at the end of
section I, each of these communities can read only the sections they are most

Perception of Thermal Pain and the Thermal Grill Illusion Is Associated with Polymorphisms in the Serotonin Transporter Gene
AIM: The main aim of this study was to assess if the perception of thermal pain thresholds is associated with genetically inferred levels of expression of the 5-HT transporter (5-HTT). Additionally, the perception of the so-called thermal grill illusion (TGI) was assessed. Forty-four healthy individuals (27 females, 17 males) were selected a-priori based on their 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 ('tri-allelic 5-HTTLPR') genotype, with inferred high or low 5-HTT expression. Thresholds for heat- and cold-pain were determined along with the sensory and affective dimensions of the TGI. RESULTS: Thresholds to heat- and cold-pain correlated strongly (rho = -0.58, p<0.001). Individuals in the low 5-HTT-expressing group were significantly less sensitive to heat-pain (p = 0.02) and cold-pain (p = 0.03), compared to the high-expressing group. A significant gender-by-genotype interaction also emerged for cold-pain perception (p = 0.02); low 5-HTT-expressing females were less sensitive. The TGI was rated as significantly more unpleasant (affective-motivational dimension) than painful (sensory-discriminatory dimension), (p<0.001). Females in the low 5-HTT expressing group rated the TGI as significantly less unpleasant than high 5-HTT expressing females (p<0.05), with no such differences among men. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: We demonstrate an association between inferred low 5-HTT expression and elevated thresholds to thermal pain in healthy non-depressed individuals. Despite the fact that reduced 5-HTT expression is a risk factor for chronic pain we found it to be related to hypoalgesia for threshold thermal pain. Low 5-HTT expression is, however, also a risk factor for depression where thermal insensitivity is often seen. Our results may thus contribute to a better understanding of the molecular underpinnings of such paradoxical hypoalgesia. The results point to a differential regulation of thermoafferent-information along the neuraxis on the basis of 5-HTT expression and gender. The TGI, suggested to rely on the central integration of thermoafferent-information, may prove a valuable tool in probing the affective-motivational dimension of these putative mechanisms
