Integrating errors into developmental assessment: \u27time\u27 for ages 8-13
It is widely agreed that measurement is of paramount importance to students’ overall development in mathematics. This paper describes a developmental ‘map’ of students’ understanding and skills in measurement, focussed on the topic of Time, that integrates correct and incorrect student ideas. The map is based on a Rasch analysis of data from a large-scale UK national survey for standardising assessment for children from 5 to 14 years of age. It is demonstrated how a partial credit strategy enables a developmental map to be constructed to show students’ strengths and weaknesses in a meaningful and useful summative and formative manner. This map provides evidence, of both a summative and a formative nature, which may enable teachers to craft appropriate and successful learning experiences for children.<br /
Intra-session and inter-day reliability of the Myon 320 electromyography system during sub-maximal contractions
Electromyography systems are widely used within the field of scientific and clinical practices. The reliability of these systems are paramount when conducting research. The reliability of Myon 320 Surface Electromyography System is yet to be determined. This study aims to determine the intra-session and inter-day reliability of the Myon 320 Surface Electromyography System. Muscle activity from fifteen participants was measured at the anterior deltoid muscle during a bilateral front raise exercise, the vastus lateralis muscle during a squat exercise and the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle during an isometric handgrip task. Intra-session and inter-day reliability was calculated by intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement and coefficient of variation (CV). The normalized root mean squared (RMS) surface electromyographic signals produced good intra-session and inter-day testing intraclass correlation coefficient values (range: 0.63-0.97) together with low standard error of measurement (range: 1.49-2.32) and CV (range: 95% Confidence Interval = 0.36-12.71) measures for the dynamic-and-isometric contractions. The findings indicate that the Myon 320 Surface Electromyography System produces good to fair reliability when examining intra-session and inter-day reliability. Findings of the study provide evidence of the reliability of electromyography between trials which is essential during clinical testing.</p
Cyclometallated Platinum(II) Complexes Featuring an Unusual, C^NâCoordinating Pyridylâpyridylidene Ligand and LâX Coligands: Synthesis, Structures and Dual Luminescence Behavior
Thanks to an unusual protodemethylation reaction, a series of luminescent cyclometallated platinum(II) complexes can be prepared, which incorporate a rare NC-chelating, pyridyl-pyridylidene ligand, in combination with OO-coordinating acetylacetonate (acac) or NO-coordinating 2-picolinate (pic) or 8-hydroxyquinolate. The acac and pic complexes show unusual dual emission in a frozen glass.A series of cyclometallated platinum(II) complexes incorporating a rare, N^C-chelating, pyridyl-pyridylidene ligand are described, in which the coordination sphere is completed by two chlorides or an LâX co-ligand, namely OâO-coordinating acetylacetonate (acac), or N^O-coordinating 2-picolinate (pic) or 8-hydroxyquinolinate. The acac and pic complexes have been structurally characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These two complexes display red phosphorescence in the solid state at room temperature. In a frozen glass at 77â
K, all four complexes show two broad emission bands that span much of the visible spectrum, apparently from two unequilibrated excited states
Phases of granular segregation in a binary mixture
We present results from an extensive experimental investigation into granular
segregation of a shallow binary mixture in which particles are driven by
frictional interactions with the surface of a vibrating horizontal tray. Three
distinct phases of the mixture are established viz; binary gas (unsegregated),
segregation liquid and segregation crystal. Their ranges of existence are
mapped out as a function of the system's primary control parameters using a
number of measures based on Voronoi tessellation. We study the associated
transitions and show that segregation can be suppressed is the total filling
fraction of the granular layer, , is decreased below a critical value,
, or if the dimensionless acceleration of the driving, , is

The Community-Driven Approach to Environmental Exposures: How a Community-Based Participatory Research Program Analyzing Impacts of Environmental Exposure on Lupus Led to a Toxic Site Cleanup
Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a mechanism to improve environmental quality in communities primarily inhabited by minorities or low income families. A collaborative partnership between the University at Buffalo and the Toxic Waste Lupus Coalition was formed to investigate the high prevalence of lupus in the area and whether cases of disease were linked to chemicals found at a nearby New York State Superfund site in East Buffalo. The purpose of the study was to use CBPR practices to educate impacted residents and enable their participation in efforts to get a nearby contaminated waste site remediated. Community members were active participants in the development of the plan to clean up the toxic site. These methods can be used to better engage the community in research and involve them in actions taken to improve their neighborhood
Colombian adolescentsâ preferences for independently accessing sexual and reproductive health services: a cross-sectional and bioethics analysis
Objective
Our study sought to (1) describe the practices and preferences of Colombian adolescents in accessing sexual and reproductive health services: accompanied versus alone; (2) compare actual practices with stated preferences; and (3) determine age and gender differences regarding the practice and these stated preferences.
Methods
812 participants aged 11â24Â years old answered a survey in two Profamilia clinics in the cities of Medellin and Cali in Colombia. A cross-sectional analysis was performed to compare participantsâ answers based on the variables of gender and age.
Results
A quarter of participants visited the clinic alone (25.4%). Females were more likely to go alone in comparison to males (26.3% vs 14.1%; p = 0.031), and older participants went alone more often than younger participants (p \u3c 0.001). Most participants â 72.7% (95 %CI: 69.3â75.9) â expressed a preference in being accompanied to the clinic, and more than 90% had their preferences met. The preferences of older participants were, however, less likely to be met than those of younger participants (p \u3c 0.001), notably, because they predominantly wanted to be accompanied.
Conclusion
Contemporary public health and bioethics literature advocates in favor of developing health services that better meet the preferences of adolescents. The present research highlights an apparent blind spot related to the role that others (e.g., parents, friends, partners) can or should play in accompanying adolescent patients when they access sexual and reproductive health services. Respecting adolescentsâ preferences, and hence their autonomy, is not simply a matter of ensuring freedom from constraints (e.g., their right and ability to go alone). Rather, it should also consider the liberty to choose whether to be accompanied when accessing SHRS and by whom
