Design Synthesis of Adaptive Mesoscopic Cellular Structures with Unit Truss Approach and Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm
Cellular material structures have been engineered at the mesoscopic scale for high performance
and multifunctional capabilities. However, the design of adaptive cellular structures - structures with
cellular configurations, sizes, and shapes designed for a specific geometric and loading context - has
not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper, the authors present a design synthesis method with the
use of unit truss approach and particle swarm optimization algorithm to design adaptive cellular
structures. A critical review is presented to show the pros and cons of the new design synthesis method
and an existing homogenization method. The research extends the application of additive
manufacturing in the design of new materials for high performances and benefits its long-term growth.Mechanical Engineerin
On the direct evaluation of the equilibrium distribution of clusters by simulation
An expression is derived that relates the average population of a particular type of cluster in a metastable vapor phase of volume Vtot to the probability, estimated by simulation, of finding this cluster in a system of volume V taken inside Vtot, where V<<Vtot. Correct treatment of the translational free energy of the cluster is crucial for this purpose. We show that the problem reduces to one of devising the proper boundary condition for the simulation. We then verify the result obtained previously for a low vapor density limit [J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3416 (1998)]. The difficulty implicit in our recent calculation [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 5249 (1999)], in which the approach in the former was generalized to higher vapor densities, is shown to be resolved by a method already suggested in that paper

We clarify some of the subtle issues surrounding the observational cluster method, a simulation technique for studying nucleation. The validity of the method is reaffirmed here. The condition of the compact cluster limit is quantified and its implications are elucidated in terms of the correct enumeration of configuration space
Decentralized Event-Triggered Consensus of Linear Multi-agent Systems under Directed Graphs
An event-triggered control technique for consensus of multi-agent systems
with general linear dynamics is presented. This paper extends previous work to
consider agents that are connected using directed graphs. Additionally, the
approach shown here provides asymptotic consensus with guaranteed positive
inter-event time intervals. This event-triggered control method is also used in
the case where communication delays are present. For the communication delay
case we also show that the agents achieve consensus asymptotically and that,
for every agent, the time intervals between consecutive transmissions is

Further Studies on Fire Retardant Polystyrene by Friedel–Crafts Chemistry
The combination of a copolymer of 4-vinylbenzyl alcohol and styrene with 2-ethylhexyldiphenylphosphate (DPP) and with metal chlorides has been studied by TGA, radiative gasification, Cone Calorimetry, and oxygen index measurements. Evidence is presented in support of a cross-linking reaction with the additives and the copolymer, which proceeds through a Friedel–Crafts mechanism. This approach reduces the peak heat release rate (HRR) by 60% as measured in the Cone Calorimeter. There is a significant reduction in the mass loss rate during the thermal degradation, and evidence of char formation is observed in the radiative gasification experiments
