    Determination of dimethyl sulfide in gas samples by single photon ionization time of flight mass spectrometry

    It is difficult to determine sulfur-containing volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere because of their reactivity. Primary off-line techniques may suffer losses of analytes during the transportation from field to laboratory and sample preparation. In this study, a novel method was developed to directly measure dimethyl sulfide at parts-per-billion concentration levels in the atmosphere using vacuum ultraviolet single photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. This technique offers continuous sampling at a response rate of one measurement per second, or cumulative measurements over longer time periods. Laboratory prepared samples of different concentrations of dimethyl sulfide in pure nitrogen gas were analyzed at several sampling frequencies. Good precision was achieved using sampling periods of at least 60 seconds with a relative standard deviation of less than 25%. The detection limit for dimethyl sulfide was below the 3 ppb olfactory threshold. These results demonstrate that single photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry is a valuable tool for rapid, real-time measurements of sulfur-containing organic compounds in the air

    A nematophagous fungus, Esteya vermicola, is recorded as the first endoparasitic fungus of pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, in last century. E. vermicola exhibited high infectivity toward PWN in the laboratory conditions and conidia spraying of this fungus on Japanese red pine, Pinus densiflora, seedlings in the field protected the pine trees from pine wilt disease to some extent, indicating that it is a potential bio-control agent against PWN. Previous research had demonstrated that the living fungal mycelia of E. vermicola continuously produced certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which were responsible for the PWN attraction. However, identity of these VOCs remains unknown.In this study, we report the identification of α-pinene, β-pinene, and camphor produced by living mycelia of E. vermicola, the same volatile compounds emitted from PWN host pine tree, as the major VOCs for PWN attraction using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In addition, we also confirmed the host deception behavior of E. vermicola to PWN by using synthetic VOCs in a straightforward laboratory bioassay.This research result has demonstrated that the endoparasitic nematophagous fungus, E. vermicola, mimics the scent of PWN host pine tree to entice PWN for the nutrient. The identification of the attractive VOCs emitted from the fungus E. vermicola is of significance in better understanding parasitic mechanism of the fungus and the co-evolution in the two organisms and will aid management of the pine wilt disease

    Emission factor of ammonia (NH3) from on-road vehicles in China: tunnel tests in urban Guangzhou

    Ammonia (NH _3 ) is the primary alkaline gas in the atmosphere that contributes to formation of secondary particles. Emission of NH _3 from vehicles, particularly gasoline powered light duty vehicles equipped with three-way catalysts, is regarded as an important source apart from emissions from animal wastes and soils, yet measured emission factors for motor vehicles are still not available in China, where traffic-related emission has become an increasingly important source of air pollutants in urban areas. Here we present our tunnel tests for NH _3 from motor vehicles under ‘real world conditions’ in an urban roadway tunnel in Guangzhou, a central city in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in south China. By attributing all NH _3 emissions in the tunnel to light-duty gasoline vehicles, we obtained a fuel-based emission rate of 2.92 ± 0.18 g L ^−1 and a mileage-based emission factor of 229.5 ± 14.1 mg km ^−1 . These emission factors were much higher than those measured in the United States while measured NO _x emission factors (7.17 ± 0.60 g L ^−1 or 0.56 ± 0.05 g km ^−1 ) were contrastingly near or lower than those previously estimated by MOBILE/PART5 or COPERT IV models. Based on the NH _3 emission factors from this study, on-road vehicles accounted for 8.1% of NH _3 emissions in the PRD region in 2006 instead of 2.5% as estimated in a previous study using emission factors taken from the Emission Inventory Improvement Program (EIIP) in the United States

    Effect modification of the short-term effects of air pollution on morbidity by season: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Studies of the health effects of air pollution have traditionally controlled for ambient temperature as a confounder, and vice versa. However, season might be an important factor contributing to adverse health effects of air pollution. Given the current inconsistencies in results of previous studies on the effect modification of air pollution on morbidity by season, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize the current evidence on effects of season on air pollution and morbidity. The electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI, and Wanfang were used to identify papers published up to the 30st of November in 2019. We identified 4284 articles, after screening, eighty papers met the inclusion criteria. Significant effect modification of CO, O3, SO2 and NO2 on morbidity by season was observed, with corresponding ratio of relative risk of 1.0009 (95% CI: 1.0001–1.0018), 1.0080 (95% CI: 1.0021–1.0138), 0.9828 (95% CI: 0.9697–0.9962) and 0.9896 (95% CI: 0.9824–0.9968), respectively. Season significantly modified the effect of CO on pneumonia, the effect of SO2 on cardiovascular disease, the effect of PM10 on stroke, and the effect of O3 on stroke, asthma and pneumonia. The effect modifications of air pollution by season were similar among males and females, while the effect estimates seem to be higher among children under 18 years old and the elderly aged 75 or over. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying the seasonal variance of the effect of air pollutants on morbidity

    Global Associations of Air Pollution and Conjunctivitis Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    (1) Background: As the most common eye disease diagnosed in emergency departments, conjunctivitis has caused serious health and economic burdens worldwide. However, whether air pollution may be a risk factor for conjunctivitis is still inconsistent among current evidence. (2) Methods: We searched the literature on the relationship between air pollution and conjunctivitis in multiple English databases before 18 March 2019. Meta-analysis, meta-regression, and funnel plots were used to integrate the data, identify the sources of bias, and determine the publication bias, respectively. (3) Results: A total of 2450 papers were found, 12 of which were finally included. The pooled relative risk for each 10 μg/m3 increase of air pollution on conjunctivitis was 1.0006 (95%CI: 0.9993–1.0019) for CO, 1.0287 (1.0120–1.0457) for NO2, 1.0089 (1.0030–1.0149) for O3, 1.0004 (0.9976–1.0032) for PM2.5, 1.0033 (0.9982–1.0083) for PM10, and 1.0045 (0.9908–1.0185) for SO2. In the subgroup, PM2.5 and O3 had a greater impact on conjunctivitis risk in women than in men, and people <18 years old than those ≥18 years old. Relative humidity significantly modified the risk of O3 on conjunctivitis (p = 0.023), explaining 45% of the between-study heterogeneity. (4) Conclusion: Globally, air pollution has considerable health risks for conjunctivitis. Females and the youth were more vulnerable to PM2.5, NO2, and O3. Reductions of air pollution levels are still warranted to protect the vulnerable populations

    Ammonia emissions from a representative in-use fleet of vehicles in Guangzhou

    Emission rates of ammonia (NH3) are reported for a fleet of 130 light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles recruited in Guangzhou, China. NH3 measurements were performed using Nessler's Reagents spectrophotometry and nationwide standard chassis dynamometer test cycles required by Chinese EPA. Emissions of CO and NOx were also measured during these test cycles. Emission factors of NH3 were calculated for each type of vehicle and used to estimate the total emissions of NH3 from motor vehicles in Guangzhou (GZ) in 2009. Emission factors of NH3 show large variations among different categories of vehicles, with a range from 4 to 138 mg km-1. The average emissions of NH3 in Guangzhou in 2009 were estimated to be 983 t, with a range from 373 to 2136 t. In addition, it was found that vehicles with the highest NH3 emission rates possess the following characteristics: mediumand heavy-duty vehicles, certified with out-of-date emission standards, mid-range odometer readings, and higher CO and NOx emission rates. The results of this study will be useful for developing NH3 emissions inventories in Guangzhou and other urban areas in China

    Relationship between atmospheric PM-Bound reactive oxygen species, their half-lives, and regulated pollutants: investigation and preliminary model

    The concentration, nature, and persistence of particulate matter (PM)-bound reactive oxygen species (ROS) are of significant interest in understanding how atmospheric pollution affects health. However, the inherent difficulties in their measurement, particularly regarding the so-called "short-lived" ROS, have limited our understanding of their persistence and concentrations in the atmosphere. This paper aims to address this limitation through the analysis of PM-bound ROS measurements from the Particle Into Nitroxide Quencher (PINQ) system at an atmospheric monitoring site in the city of Heshan, Guangdong Province, China. The measured daily average and standard deviation for the measurement period was 0.050 ± 0.017 nmol·m-3. The averaged measured concentration of ROS per mass of PM and standard deviation was 0.0012 ± nmol·mg. The dataset was also correlated with standard pollutants, and a simplified model was constructed to separate the contributions of short-lived (t1/2 = 5 min) and long-lived (t1/2 ∼ infinity) ROS to total concentration using ozone, carbon monoxide, and PM mass. This showed that the short-lived ROS contribute an average of 33% of the daily PM-bound ROS burden over the measurement period, up to 52% of daily average on elevated days, and up to 71% for hourly averages. These results highlight the need for accurate measurements of short-lived ROS and provide the starting point for a general model to predict PM-bound ROS concentrations using widely available standard pollutants for future epidemiological research.</p

    Unexpected increase in indoor pollutants after the introduction of a smoke-free policy in a correctional centre

    Correctional centers (prisons) are one of the few non-residential indoor environments where smoking is still permitted. However, few studies have investigated indoor air quality (IAQ) in these locations. We quantified the level of inmate and staff exposure to secondhand smoke, including particle number (PN) count, and we assessed the impact of the smoking ban on IAQ. We performed measurements of indoor and outdoor PM and PN concentrations, personal PN exposure levels, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nicotine both before and after a complete indoor smoking ban in an Australian maximum security prison. Results show that the indoor 24-h average PM concentrations ranged from 6 (±1)\ua0μg/m to 17 (±3)\ua0μg/m pre-ban. The post-ban levels ranged from 7 (±2)\ua0μg/m to 71 (±43)\ua0μg/m. While PM concentrations decreased in one unit post-ban, they increased in the other two units. Similar post-ban increases were also observed in levels of PN and VOCs. We describe an unexpected increase of indoor pollutants following a total indoor smoking ban in a prison that was reflected across multiple pollutants that are markers of smoking. We hypothesise that clandestine post-ban smoking among inmates may have been the predominant cause
