Method for deducing anisotropic spin-exchange rates
Using measured spin-transfer rates from alkali atoms to He-3, combined with
spin-relaxation rates of the alkali atoms due to He-3 and He-4, it should be
possible to differentiate between isotropic and anisotropic spin-exchange. This
would give a fundamental limit on the He-3 polarization attainable in
spin-exchange optical pumping. For K-He, we find the limit to be 0.90+-0.11
Anomaluos RR Lyrae (V-I)_0 colors in Baade's Window
We compare (V-I)_0-(V-K)_0 color-color and (V-I)_0-log P period-color
diagrams for Baade's Window and local RRab Lyrae stars. We find that for a
fixed log P the Baade's Window RR Lyrae stars are ~0.17 magnitudes redder in
(V-I)_0 than the local RR Lyrae stars. We also show that there is no such
effect observed in (V-K)_0. We argue that an extinction misestimate towards
Baade's Window is not a plausible explanation of the discrepancy. Unlike
Baade's Window RR Lyrae stars, the local ones follow a black-body color-color
relation and are well approximated by theoretical models. We test two
parameters, metallicity and surface gravity, and find that their effects are
too small to explain the (V-I)_0 discrepancy between the two groups of stars.
We do not provide any explanation for the anomalous (V-I)_0 behavior of the
Baade's Window RR Lyrae stars. We note that a similar effect for clump giant
stars has been recently reported by Paczynski and we caution that RR Lyrae
stars and clump giants, often used as standard candles, can be subject to the

Consequences of Zeeman Degeneracy for van der Waals Blockade between Rydberg Atoms
We analyze the effects of Zeeman degeneracies on the long-range interactions
between like Rydberg atoms, with particular emphasis on applications to quantum
information processing using van der Waals blockade. We present a general
analysis of how degeneracies affect the primary error sources in blockade
experiments, emphasizing that blockade errors are sensitive primarily to the
weakest possible atom-atom interactions between the degenerate states, not the
mean interaction strength. We present explicit calculations of the van der
Waals potentials in the limit where the fine-structure interaction is large
compared to the atom-atom interactions. The results are presented for all
potential angular momentum channels invoving s, p, and d states. For most
channels there are one or more combinations of Zeeman levels that have
extremely small dipole-dipole interactions and are therefore poor candidates
for effective blockade experiments. Channels with promising properties are
identified and discussed. We also present numerical calculations of Rb and Cs
dipole matrix elements and relevant energy levels using quantum defect theory,
allowing for convenient quantitative estimates of the van der Waals
interactions to be made for principal quantum numbers up to 100. Finally, we
combine the blockade and van der Waals results to quantitatively analyze the
angular distribution of the blockade shift and its consequence for angular
momentum channels and geometries of particular interest for blockade
experiments with Rb.Comment: 16 figure
Multiple cooperating manipulators: The case of kinematically redundant arms
Existing work concerning two or more manipulators simultaneously grasping and transferring a common load is continued and extended. Specifically considered is the case of one or more arms being kinematically redundant. Some existing results in the modeling and control of single redundant arms and multiple manipulators are reviewed. The cooperating situation is modeled in terms of a set of coordinates representing object motion and internal object squeezing. Nominal trajectories in these coordinates are produced via actuator load distribution algorithms introduced previously. A controller is developed to track these desired object trajectories while making use of the kinematic redundancy to additionally aid the cooperation and coordination of the system. It is shown how the existence of kinematic redundancy within the system may be used to enhance the degree of cooperation achievable
Determining the superconducting gap structure in Sr2RuO4 from sound attenuation studies below Tc
This work presents a quantitative theoretical study of the sound attenuation
in the unconventional multiband superconductor Sr2RuO4 below the
superconducting transition temperature Tc. Sound attenuation in this material
is shown to have the remarkable property of being able to identify different
nodal structures on different bands. The nodal structures on the \gamma band on
the one hand, and on the \alpha and \beta bands on the other, are both found to
be characterized by the existence of point nodes, but are significantly

Present Constraints on the H-dibaryon at the Physical Point from Lattice QCD
The current constraints from lattice QCD on the existence of the H-dibaryon
are discussed. With only two significant lattice QCD calculations of the
H-dibaryon binding energy at approximately the same lattice spacing, the forms
of the chiral and continuum extrapolations to the physical point are not
determined. In this brief report, we consider the constraints on the H-dibaryon
imposed by two simple chiral extrapolations. In both instances, the
extrapolation to the physical pion mass allows for a bound H-dibaryon or a
near-threshold scattering state. Further lattice QCD calculations are required

Cost effectiveness of bio-ethanol to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Greece
The purpose of this study is to evaluate ethanol cost- effectiveness with regards to carbon dioxide emissions. Actually, bio-fuel production is only viable thanks to the tax credit policy resulting in economic ‘deadweight’ loss. The environmental performance is assessed under the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework. Economic burden to society to support the activity divided by avoided CO2 equivalent emissions indicates the bio-ethanol cost effectiveness. Agricultural feedstock supply that comprises of sugarbeets, grains and industrial processing sub-models are articulated in a regional sector model. The maximization of total welfare determines optimal crop mix for farmers and the best configurations for industry. This is illustrated for bio-ethanol produced by the ex-sugar industry in Thessaly, Greece. Life cycle activity analysis showed that, at the optimum, CO2 emission is reduced between 1 and 1.5 t of carbon dioxide equivalent per ton of ethanol. The unitary cost falls in the range of 100 to 250 euro per ton of CO2 and it is remarkably dependent on the agricultural policy scenario.Cost effectiveness, ethanol, mathematical programming, life cycle assessment, greenhouse gases
