RISK AND MARKET PARTICIPANT BEHAVIOR IN THE U.S. SLAUGHTER-CATTLE MARKET
Incomplete information generates uncertainty for market participants in the slaughter-cattle market. Buyer and seller behavior in the presence of that uncertainty is examined. Statistically significant risk premiums are charged by packers when buying slaughter cattle on either a live- or dressed-weight basis compared to buying on a grade-and-yield basis. Pratt-Arrow risk-aversion coefficients are calculated for buyers and these remain constant over all marketing methods. Sellers market cattle under all three marketing methods, suggesting producersÂ’' attitudes toward risk (risk-aversion coefficients) vary.Risk and Uncertainty,
Searching for Dark Matter Annihilation in the Smith High-Velocity Cloud
Recent observations suggest that some high-velocity clouds may be confined by
massive dark matter halos. In particular, the proximity and proposed dark
matter content of the Smith Cloud make it a tempting target for the indirect
detection of dark matter annihilation. We argue that the Smith Cloud may be a
better target than some Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies and use
gamma-ray observations from the Fermi Large Area Telescope to search for a dark
matter annihilation signal. No significant gamma-ray excess is found coincident
with the Smith Cloud, and we set strong limits on the dark matter annihilation
cross section assuming a spatially-extended dark matter profile consistent with
dynamical modeling of the Smith Cloud. Notably, these limits exclude the
canonical thermal relic cross section () for dark matter masses GeV annihilating via the or channels for certain assumptions of the dark matter
density profile; however, uncertainties in the dark matter content of the Smith

Colloidal diffusion and hydrodynamic screening near boundaries
The hydrodynamic interactions between colloidal particles in small ensembles are measured at varying distances from a no-slip surface over a range of inter-particle separations. The diffusion tensor for motion parallel to the wall of each ensemble is calculated by analyzing thousands of particle trajectories generated by blinking holographic optical tweezers and by dynamic simulation. The Stokesian
Dynamics simulations predict similar particle dynamics. By separating the dynamics into three classes of modes: self, relative and collective diffusion, we observe qualitatively different behavior depending on the relative magnitudes of the distance of the ensemble from the wall and the inter-particle separation. A simple picture of the pair-hydrodynamic interactions is developed, while many-body-hydrodynamic interactions give rise to more complicated behavior. The results demonstrate that the
effect of many-body hydrodynamic interactions in the presence of a wall is much richer than the single
particle behavior and that the multiple-particle behavior cannot be simply predicted by a superposition of pair interactions
A Preconditioned Interior Point Method for Support Vector Machines Using an ANOVA-Decomposition and NFFT-Based Matrix-Vector Products
In this paper we consider the numerical solution to the soft-margin support
vector machine optimization problem. This problem is typically solved using the
SMO algorithm, given the high computational complexity of traditional
optimization algorithms when dealing with large-scale kernel matrices. In this
work, we propose employing an NFFT-accelerated matrix-vector product using an
ANOVA decomposition for the feature space that is used within an interior point
method for the overall optimization problem. As this method requires the
solution of a linear system of saddle point form we suggest a preconditioning
approach that is based on low-rank approximations of the kernel matrix together
with a Krylov subspace solver. We compare the accuracy of the ANOVA-based
kernel with the default LIBSVM implementation. We investigate the performance
of the different preconditioners as well as the accuracy of the ANOVA kernel on

Worker participation and firm performance : evidence from Germany and Britain
This paper examines the Freeman-Lazear works council/worker involvement model against the empirical backdrop of two different industrial relations systems: the British voluntaristic system, and the German system of mandatory works councils. We find that in nonunion British firms worker involvement increases economic performance, but in the union firms there are negative effects. The implication is that local distributive conflict can cause the wrong level of worker involvement to be chosen, as predicted by the model. ln Germany, where centralized collective bargaining reduces local distributive conflict, we find that a mandate can be advantageous, again as predicted by the model. However, the straitjacket of a mandate is shown to disadvantage small German firms
