A strategy for efficiently collecting aerosol condensate using silica fibers:application to carbonyl emissions from e-cigarettes
Analysing harmful constituents in e-cigarette aerosols typically involves adopting a methodology used for analysing tobacco smoke. Cambridge filter pads (CFP) are the basis of numerous protocols for analysing the various classes of compounds representing 93 harmful and potentially harmful constituents identified in tobacco smoke by the FDA. This paper describes a simplified method for trapping the low volatility components of e-cigarette aerosols using a single trapping procedure followed by physical extraction. The trap is a plug of amorphous silica fibres (0.75 g of 4 µm diameter) within a 10mL syringe inserted between the e-cigarette mouthpiece and the pump of the vaping machine. The method is evaluated for emissions from three generations of e-cigarette device (Kangertech CE4, EVOD and Subox Mini-C). On average the silica wool traps about 94% of the vapourised liquid mass in the three devices and higher levels of condensate is retained before reaching saturation compared with CFP. The condensate is then physically extracted from the silica wool plug using a centrifuge. Condensate is then available for use directly in multiple analytical procedures or toxicological experiments. The method is tested by comparison with published analyses of carbonyls, among the most potent toxicants and carcinogens in e-cigarette emissions. Ranges for HPLC-DAD analyses of carbonyl-DNPH derivatives in a laboratory formulation of e-liquid are formaldehyde (0.182±0.023 to 9.896±0.709 µg puff-1), acetaldehyde (0.059±0.005 to 0.791±0.073 µg puff-1) and propionaldehyde (0.008±0.0001 to 0.033±0.023 µg puff-1); other carbonyls are identified and quantified. Carbonyls concentrations are also consistent with published experiments showing marked increases in with variable power settings (10W - 50W). Compared with CFPs, e-cigarette aerosol collection by silica wool requires only one vaping session for multiple analyte groups, traps more condensate per puff, collects more condensate before saturating
The Equilibrium Photoionized Absorber in 3C351
We present two ROSAT PSPC observations of the radio-loud, lobe-dominated
quasar 3C 351, which shows an `ionized absorber' in its X-ray spectrum. The
factor 1.7 change in flux in the 2~years between the observations allows
a test of models for this ionized absorber.
The absorption feature at ~0.7 keV (quasar frame) is present in both spectra
but with a lower optical depth when the source intensity - and hence the
ionizing flux at the absorber - is higher, in accordance with a simple,
single-zone, equilibrium photoionization model. Detailed modeling confirms this
agrement quantitatively. The maximum response time of 2 years allows us to
limit the gas density: n_e > 2 x 10^4 cm^{-3}; and the distance of the ionized
gas from the central source R < 19 pc. This produces a strong test for a
photoionized absorber in 3C~351: a factor 2 flux change in ~1 week in this
source must show non-equilibrium effects in the ionized absorber.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Ap
Baryon loading and the Weibel instability in gamma-ray bursts
The dynamics of two counter-streaming electron-positron-ion unmagnetized
plasma shells with zero net charge is analyzed in the context of magnetic field
generation in GRB internal shocks due to the Weibel instability. The effects of
large thermal motion of plasma particles, arbitrary mixture of plasma species
and space charge effects are taken into account. We show that, although thermal
effects slow down the instability, baryon loading leads to a non-negligible
growth rate even for large temperatures and different shell velocities, thus
guaranteeing the robustness and the occurrence of the Weibel instability for a

Hand to mouth in a Neandertal : right-handedness in regourdou 1
We describe and analyze a Neandertal postcranial skeleton and dentition, which together show unambiguous signs of right-handedness. Asymmetries between the left and right upper arm in Regourdou 1 were identified nearly 20 years ago, then confirmed by more detailed analyses of the inner bone structure for the clavicle, humerus, radius and ulna. The total pattern of all bones in the shoulder and arm reveals that Regourdou 1 was a right-hander. Confirmatory evidence comes from the mandibular incisors, which display a distinct pattern of right oblique scratches, typical of right-handed manipulations performed at the front of the mouth. Regourdou's right handedness is consistent with the strong pattern of manual lateralization in Neandertals and further confirms a modern pattern of left brain dominance, presumably signally linguistic competence. These observations along with cultural, genetic and morphological evidence indicate language competence in Neandertals and their European precursors
Obtaining pressure versus concentration phase diagrams in spin systems from Monte Carlo simulations
We propose an efficient procedure for determining phase diagrams of systems
that are described by spin models. It consists of combining cluster algorithms
with the method proposed by Sauerwein and de Oliveira where the grand canonical
potential is obtained directly from the Monte Carlo simulation, without the
necessity of performing numerical integrations. The cluster algorithm presented
in this paper eliminates metastability in first order phase transitions
allowing us to locate precisely the first-order transitions lines. We also
produce a different technique for calculating the thermodynamic limit of
quantities such as the magnetization whose infinite volume limit is not
straightforward in first order phase transitions. As an application, we study
the Andelman model for Langmuir monolayers made of chiral molecules that is
equivalent to the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin-1 model. We have obtained the
phase diagrams in the case where the intermolecular forces favor interactions
between enantiomers of the same type (homochiral interactions). In particular,
we have determined diagrams in the surface pressure versus concentration plane
which are more relevant from the experimental point of view and less usual in
numerical studies
General approach for studying first-order phase transitions at low temperatures
By combining different ideas, a general and efficient protocol to deal with
discontinuous phase transitions at low temperatures is proposed. For small
's, it is possible to derive a generic analytic expression for appropriate
order parameters, whose coefficients are obtained from simple simulations. Once
in such regimes simulations by standard algorithms are not reliable, an
enhanced tempering method, the parallel tempering -- accurate for small and
intermediate system sizes with rather low computational cost -- is used.
Finally, from finite size analysis, one can obtain the thermodynamic limit. The
procedure is illustrated for four distinct models, demonstrating its power,
e.g., to locate coexistence lines and the phases density at the coexistence.Comment: 5 page

The connection between braided Hopf algebra structure and the quantum group
covariance of deformed oscillators is constructed explicitly. In this context

Electromechanical tuning of vertically-coupled photonic crystal nanobeams
We present the design, the fabrication and the characterization of a tunable
one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal cavity (PCC) etched on two
vertically-coupled GaAs nanobeams. A novel fabrication method which prevents
their adhesion under capillary forces is introduced. We discuss a design to
increase the flexibility of the structure and we demonstrate a large reversible
and controllable electromechanical wavelength tuning (> 15 nm) of the cavity
