Sustainability reports ought to be key channels for communication with stakeholders, enhancing organisational accountability and transparency. However, the proliferation of sustainability metrics and the voluntary nature of reporting leads to inconsistencies in the quality of sustainability reporting, invariably affecting its functionality and effectiveness. This research project investigates the quality and functionality of sustainability reporting within the South African gold mining sector. Firstly, a framework for characterising and subsequently assessing the quality of sustainability reports was developed based on a review and analysis of the published literature. This framework was then applied in a multi-method approach consisting of a desktop review involving a content analysis of three company reports that disclose performance according to the GRI G4 Guidelines, and semi-structured interviews with key internal and external stakeholders. The analysis shows that while sustainability reports in the South African mining sector have been found to have beneficial functions for both internal and external stakeholders, they also presented quality issues that are both technical and socio-political in nature. More specifically, the study found that sustainability reports are used internally at an executive level and that the reporting process enhances organisational transparency and accountability. Externally, sustainability reports were found to be used as a source of performance information and as an indicator of company commitment and legitimacy. However, the quality issues, namely levels of aggregation and detail, as well as the degree of integrity, were considered to have a negative effect on the functionality and effectiveness of sustainability reports for stakeholders. This study offers insight into how companies report and how stakeholders perceive and relate to sustainability reporting, and in turn serves to highlight both strengths that should be encouraged, and weaknesses that detract from sustainability reports’ effectiveness and functionality. The application of a multi-criteria framework in a multi-method approach provides a more holistic picture of the quality and functionality of sustainability reports, allowing technical and political quality issues to be discussed in a simultaneous study, as well as highlighting the complexities and nuances of sustainability reporting

The Tensile Behaviour of Highly Filled High-Density Polyethylene Quaternary Composites: Weld-Line Effects, DIC Curiosities and Shifted Deformation Mechanisms

The interactive effects between additives and weld lines, which are frequent injection-moulding defects, were studied in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and compared to weld-line-free reference samples. These materials were formulated around a D- and I-optimal experimental design, based on a quadratic Scheffé polynomial model, with up to 60 wt% calcium carbonate, masterbatched carbon black and a stabiliser package. Where reasonable and appropriate, the behaviours of the systems were modelled using statistical techniques, for a better understanding of the underlying trends. The characterisations were performed through the use of conventional tensile testing, digital image correlation (DIC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A range of complex interactive effects were found during conventional tensile testing, with DIC used to better understand and explain these effects. SEM is used to better understand the failure mechanics of some of these systems through fractography, particularly regarding particle effects. A measure is introduced to quantify the deviation of the pre-yield deformation curve from the ideal elastic case. Novel analysis of DIC results is proposed, through the use of combined time-series plots and measures quantifying the extent and localisation of peak deformation. Through this, it could be found that strong shifts in the deformation mechanisms occur as a function of formulation and the presence/absence of weld lines. Primarily, changes are noted in the onset of continuous inter- and intralamellar slip and cavitation/fibrillation, seen through the onset of localised deformation and stress-whitening

Model vir die liturgiese gebruik van simbole en rituele

Summaries in English and AfrikaansThis thesis embarked with the problem within the liturgy that tension exists in trying to minister justly according to the current context and trying to minister faithful to Scripture. A departing perspective is that the liturgy is the heartbeat in the congregation whereto and from where every aspect is networking. Also, that the emphasis can be on both proclaiming and celebrating in Protestant liturgies. Dialogical communication was chosen as theoretical approach together with communicative action for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The first and last chapters illustrate what is meant with the term liturgy. The problem is stated (and investigated) that liturgy is a complicated and central phenomenon, which ought to let Reformed theology as well as a postmodern context come to their own. It is also indicated that liturgical spirituality, liturgical communication and liturgical pastorate can better be used and improved during Sunday liturgies. For the liturgy in order to serve the Reformed tradition and the postmodern context, and to uplift the three liturgical aspects of spirituality, communication and pastorate, liturgical symbols and rituals are posed as timeless agents to better the liturgy. Attention was also given to symbolism in Scripture. This led to a model of application as a theory of praxis for the liturgical use of symbols and rituals. The core of this model or theory of praxis, is: I. The highest priority in liturgical symbolism will always be to promote the holy Trinity and Biblical principles. II. The supplementary use of right-brain components, such as experience, emotion and music. III. A high premium on active participation and repetition. IV. An approach of simplicity and soberness. V. Relevance to the culture and context of the day. VI. Services that take hold of total persons and focus on multiple senses and corporeality (bodily involvement). i VII. Room for transendence, imagination and mystic worship of God. VIII. Actions and services that embrace diversity, pluralism and generative variety. IX. Meetings where pastoral and therapeutic dimensions are included. X. Celebration and positive experiences in meetings. XI. The use of images, stories, metaphors and icons. XII. The use of meta-communicative principles such as attitude, intention and high validation of other people. Practial TheologyD. Th. (Practical Theology

Striving for Global Optima in Digital Transformation: A Paradox Theory Approach

    Get PDF
Inherent properties of digital technologies offer promising possibilities such as rapid scalability and exponential growth. However, we observe that firms pursuing digital transformation (DT) initiatives face difficulties in realizing these benefits, as they face competing organizational demands (tensions) in the DT context. By considering digital technologies’ unique properties and adopting a paradox theory lens, we conducted a qualitative study with 28 interviewees across three companies from which we derive six drivers of tensions and three novel paradoxical tensions within the DT context. We show how these drivers and tensions lead to firms pursuing short-term successes at the cost of strategic benefits that DT offers (what we call “local” instead of “global” optima). We provide scholars and practitioners with a fundamental understanding of how digital technologies define challenges in the DT process so that firms can proactively structure DT initiatives to reach global optima

Bimodal impact strength distribution in HDPE composites : formulational effects and bayesian inference

    Get PDF
A bimodal impact strength distribution was found in notched impact specimens of HDPE composites with calcium carbonate, carbon black, SEBS and stabilisers. The bimodal distribution was only found at moderate-to-high calcium carbonate loadings, with the likelihood of low impact strength increasing with increasing stabiliser loading and decreasing with increasing SEBS/CB masterbatch loading. Bayesian methods were used first to confirm bimodality and then to investigate the effects of formulation on the performance of the system, based on a hierarchical model with quadratic and interactive terms and switching based on the sampling of a Bernoulli distribution with a logistic regression informing the probability of high or low impact strength. The results are contextualised through micrograph fractography and, briefly, differential scanning calorimetry. Results are also reported for unnotched impact tests, with negative correlations for impact strength with calcium carbonate and stabilisers, a positive correlation with SEBS/CB and interactive effects.https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/advanced-industrial-and-engineering-polymer-researchChemical EngineeringSDG-09: Industry, innovation and infrastructur

Integrated enhanced cognitive behavioural (I-CBTE) therapy significantly improves effectiveness of inpatient treatment of anorexia nervosa in real life settings

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Inpatient treatment of anorexia nervosa can be lifesaving but is associated with high rates of relapse and poor outcomes. To address this, the Oxford service has adapted the enhanced cognitive behavioural treatment (CBTE) model, first developed for inpatients in Italy to a UK national health service (NHS) setting. In this study, we compared the outcomes from treatment as usual (TAU), integrated CBTE (I-CBTE), and alternative treatment models in routine UK clinical practice. METHODS: This is a longitudinal cohort study, using routinely collected data between 2017 and 2020 involving all adults with anorexia nervosa admitted to specialist units from a large geographical area in England covering a total population of 3.5 million. We compared TAU with (1) I-CBTE (13 weeks inpatient CBTE, restoration to a healthy weight, combined with 7 weeks day treatment followed by 20 weeks of outpatient CBTE; (2) standalone inpatient CBTE (due to insufficient resources since the pandemic; and (3) 6-8 weeks admission with partial weight restoration as crisis management. Primary outcome measures (min. 1 year after discharge from hospital) were defined as: (1) good outcome: Body Mass Index (BMI) > 19.5 and no abnormal eating or compensatory behaviours; (2) poor outcome: BMI < 19.5 and/or ongoing eating disorder behaviours; (3) readmission; or (4) deceased. Secondary outcomes were BMI on discharge, and length of stay. RESULTS: 212 patients were admitted to 15 specialist units in the UK depending on bed availability. The mean age was 28.9 (18-60) years, mean admission BMI was 14.1 (10-18.3), 80% were voluntary. At minimum 1-year follow up after discharge, 70% of patients receiving I-CBTE and 29% standalone inpatient CBTE maintained good outcomes, in contrast with < 5% TAU and crisis management admission. Readmission rates of I-CBTE were 14.3% vs ~ 50% (χ2 < 0.0001) in the other groups. The main predictors of good outcome were reaching healthy BMI by discharge, I-CBTE and voluntary status. Age, psychiatric comorbidity and length of stay did not predict outcomes. BMI on discharge and length of stay were significantly better in the CBTE groups than in TAU. CONCLUSIONS: Our main finding is that in a real-life setting, I-CBTE has superior short- and minimum 1 year outcomes as compared with alternative inpatient treatment models. Dissemination of I-CBTE across the care pathway has the potential to transform outcomes of inpatient treatment for this high-risk patient population and reduce personal and societal costs

Mycobacterium bovis infection in the lion (Panthera leo) : current knowledge, conundrums and research challenges

    Get PDF
Mycobacterium bovis has global public-health and socio-economic significance and can infect a wide range of species including the lion (Panthera leo) resulting in tuberculosis. Lions are classified as vulnerable under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and have experienced a 30% population decline in the past two decades. However, no attempt has been made to collate and critically evaluate the available knowledge of M.bovis infections in lions and potential effects on population. In this review we set out to redress this. Arguments suggesting that ingestion of infected prey animals are the main route of infection for lions have not been scientifically proven and research is needed into other possible sources and routes of infection. The paucity of knowledge on host susceptibility, transmission directions and therefore host status, manifestation of pathology, and epidemiology of the disease in lions also needs to be addressed. Advances have been made in diagnosing the presence of M. bovis in lions. However, these diagnostic tests are unable to differentiate between exposure, presence of infection, or stage of disease. Furthermore, there are contradictory reports on the effects of M. bovis on lion populations with more data needed on disease dynamics versus the lion population’s reproductive dynamics. Knowledge on disease effects on the lion reproduction and how additional stressors such as drought or co-morbidities may interact with tuberculosis is also lacking. Filling these knowledge gaps will contribute to the understanding of mycobacterial infections and disease in captive and wild lions and assist in lion conservation endeavours.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/vetmichb2016Mammal Research InstituteZoology and Entomolog

The weathering resistance of quaternary high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites : effects of weld lines, formulation and degradation on tensile properties

    Get PDF
DATA AVAILABILITY STATEMENT: The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request. In this work, the effects of weld lines, additives and the degree of QUV weathering on the tensile behavior of a range of high-density polyethylene composites with calcium carbonate, stabilizers and a carbon black/SEBS masterbatch are studied. The degree of weathering is characterized using FTIR-derived carbonyl, double-bond and carbonate indexes based on curve fitting, to allow for the fairer comparison of specimens with and without calcium carbonate. Weld-line specimens exhibited more rapid degradation than that seen in the reference specimens, while the exposed surfaces of the specimens degraded more quickly than the unexposed surfaces. ISO G154 Cycle 1 and Cycle 6 weathering protocols were compared. The additives were found to be effective at decreasing oxidative degradation, albeit with reduced effects at higher loadings and in mixed systems. These findings were mirrored in the mechanical properties of the specimens, with the modified specimens even exhibiting broadly improved properties with increasing aging. Elongation at break was most sensitive to weathering, with increasing degradation with increasing weathering across almost all specimens.Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP).https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/26424169Chemical EngineeringSDG-09: Industry, innovation and infrastructureSDG-12:Responsible consumption and productio
