Flat-Bottom Strategy for Improved Accuracy in Protein Side-Chain Placements

We present a new strategy for protein side-chain placement that uses flat-bottom potentials for rotamer scoring. The extent of the flat bottom depends on the coarseness of the rotamer library and is optimized for libraries ranging from diversities of 0.2 Å to 5.0 Å. The parameters reported here were optimized for forcefields using Lennard-Jones 12−6 van der Waals potential with DREIDING parameters but are expected to be similar for AMBER, CHARMM, and other forcefields. This Side-Chain Rotamer Excitation Analysis Method is implemented in the SCREAM software package. Similar scoring function strategies should be useful for ligand docking, virtual ligand screening, and protein folding applications

Determinants of U.S. Textile and Apparel Trade

A gravity model using panel data is applied to determine factors affecting textiles and apparel trade flows into the United States. The study confirms that a nation's aggregate output and per unit productivity serve as important determinants of textiles and apparel trade into the U.S., and the exporting country's depreciating exchange rate as well as its lower prices relative to U.S. prices for textiles and apparel play an important role in determining textiles and apparel trade flows to the U.S. market. Genus bounds for minimal surfaces arising from min-max constructions

In this paper we prove genus bounds for closed embedded minimal surfaces in a closed 3-dimensional manifold constructed via min-max arguments. A stronger estimate was announced by Pitts and Rubistein but to our knowledge its proof has never been published. Our proof follows ideas of Simon and uses an extension of a famous result of Meeks, Simon and Yau on the convergence of minimizing sequences of isotopic surfaces.
