Another analytic view about quantifying social forces
Montroll had considered a Verhulst evolution approach for introducing a
notion he called "social force", to describe a jump in some economic output
when a new technology or product outcompetes a previous one. In fact,
Montroll's adaptation of Verhulst equation is more like an economic field
description than a "social force". The empirical Verhulst logistic function and
the Gompertz double exponential law are used here in order to present an
alternative view, within a similar mechanistic physics framework. As an
example, a "social force" modifying the rate in the number of temples
constructed by a religious movement, the Antoinist community, between 1910 and
1940 in Belgium is found and quantified. Practically, two temple inauguration
regimes are seen to exist over different time spans, separated by a gap
attributed to a specific "constraint", a taxation system, but allowing for a
different, smooth, evolution rather than a jump. The impulse force duration is
also emphasized as being better taken into account within the Gompertz
framework. Moreover, a "social force" can be as here, attributed to a change in
the limited need/capacity of some population, coupled to some external field,
in either Verhulst or Gompertz equation, rather than resulting from already

A mechanism for pair formation in strongly correlated systems
We start from a Hamiltonian describing non-interacting fermions and add
bosons to the model, with a Jaynes-Cummings-like interaction between the bosons
and fermions. Because of the specific form of the interaction the model can be
solved exactly. In the ground state, part of the electrons form bound pairs
with opposite momentum and spin. The model also shows a gap in the kinetic
energy of the fermions, but not in the spectrum of the full Hamiltonian. This
gap is not of a mean-field nature, but is due to the Pauli exclusion principle.Comment: 13 pages, corrected some notations and made some clarification
Non-thermal nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computing using hyperpolarized Xenon
Current experiments in liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum
computing are limited by low initial polarization. To address this problem, we
have investigated the use of optical pumping techniques to enhance the
polarization of a 2-qubit NMR quantum computer (13C and 1H in 13CHCl3). To
efficiently use the increased polarization, we have generalized the procedure
for effective pure state preparation. With this new, more flexible scheme, an
effective pure state was prepared with polarization-enhancement of a factor of
10 compared to the thermal state. An implementation of Grover's quantum search

Stabilising survival selection on pre-senescent expression of a sexual ornament followed by a terminal decline
Senescence is a decrease in functional capacity, increasing mortality rate with age. Sexual signals indicate functional capacity, because costs of ornamentation ensure signal honesty, and are therefore expected to senesce, tracking physiological deterioration and mortality. For sexual traits, mixed associations with age and positive associations with life expectancy have been reported. However, whether these associations are caused by selective disappearance and/or within-individual senescence of sexual signals, respectively, is not known. We previously reported that zebra finches with redder bills had greater life expectancy, based on a single bill colour measurement per individual. We here extend this analysis using longitudinal data and show that this finding is attributable to terminal declines in bill redness in the year before death, with no detectable change in presenescent redness. Additionally, there was a quadratic relationship between presenescent bill colouration and survival: individuals with intermediate bill redness have maximum survival prospects. This may reflect that redder individuals overinvest in colouration and/or associated physiological changes, while below-average bill redness probably reflects poorer phenotypic quality. Together, this pattern suggests that bill colouration is defended against physiological deterioration, because of mate attraction benefits, or that physiological deterioration is not a gradual process, but accelerates sharply prior to death. We discuss these possibilities in the context of the reliability theory of ageing and sexual selection
Solving the Random Pielou Logistic Equation with the Random Variable Transformation Technique: Theory and Applications
[EN] The study of the dynamics of the size of a population via mathematical modelling is a problem of interest and widely studied. Traditionally, continuous deterministic methods based on differential equations have been used to deal with this problem. However, discrete versions of some models are also available and sometimes more adequate. In this paper, we randomize the Pielou logistic equation in order to include the inherent uncertainty in modelling. Taking advantage of the method of transformation of random variables, we provide a full probabilistic description to the randomized Pielou logistic model via the computation of the probability density functions of the solution stochastic process, the steady state, and the time until a certain level of population is reached. High and mighty : height increases authority in professional refereeing
Throughout the animal kingdom, larger males are more likely to attain social dominance. Several lines of evidence suggest that this relationship extends to humans, as height is positively related to dominance, status and authority. We hypothesized that height is also a determinant of authority in professional refereeing. According to the International Football Association Board, FIFA, football ("soccer") referees have full authority to enforce the laws of the game and should use their body language to show authority and to help control the match. We show that height is indeed positively related to authority status: referees were taller than their assistants (who merely have an advisory role) in both a national (French League) and an international (World Cup 2010) tournament. Furthermore, using data from the German League, we found that height was positively associated with authoritative behavior. Taller referees were better able to maintain control of the game by giving fewer fouls, thereby increasing the "flow of the game". Referee height was also positively associated with perceived referee competence, as taller referees were assigned to matches in which the visiting team had a higher ranking. Thus, height appears to be positively related to authority in professional refereeing
Genericity aspects in gravitational collapse to black holes and naked singularities
We investigate here the genericity and stability aspects for naked
singularities and black holes that arise as the final states for a complete
gravitational collapse of a spherical massive matter cloud. The form of the
matter considered is a general Type I matter field, which includes most of the
physically reasonable matter fields such as dust, perfect fluids and such other
physically interesting forms of matter widely used in gravitation theory. We
first study here in some detail the effects of small pressure perturbations in
an otherwise pressure-free collapse scenario, and examine how a collapse
evolution that was going to the black hole endstate would be modified and go to
a naked singularity, once small pressures are introduced in the initial data.
This allows us to understand the distribution of black holes and naked
singularities in the initial data space. Collapse is examined in terms of the
evolutions allowed by Einstein equations, under suitable physical conditions
and as evolving from a regular initial data. We then show that both black holes
and naked singularities are generic outcomes of a complete collapse, when
genericity is defined in a suitable sense in an appropriate space.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, some changes in text and figures to match the
