    Global food prices have increased significantly since the early 2000s, reversing the long-run trend decline in relative food prices over previous decades. A range of supply disruptions in key food-producing countries have contributed to higher food prices, along with strong demand from developing countries as per capita incomes rise and consumption patterns change.     Trends in Farm Sector Output and Exports

    Over time, the size of the farm sector has fallen relative to other sectors in the economy. However, the sector still has an important influence on the nation's pattern of economic growth and its exports. Over the last couple of decades the composition of farm production has moved towards crops and away from livestock. This has had an impact on how drought affects overall farm output, as crop production tends to fall sharply and then recover quickly when the drought breaks, while livestock production is relatively more resilient in the short term but is slower to recover.farm output; exports; drought; structural change

    Price-setting Behaviour - Insights from Australian Firms

    Since 2004, the RBA has been conducting a survey of how firms set prices, how frequently they review and change prices, and what factors influence these decisions. The results show that firms employ a range of approaches to price setting, with around half reviewing their prices at a regular interval.     Developing Preservice Teachers’ Professional Noticing of Students’ Learning

    This study examined the effects of an intervention included in a mathematics methods course on preservice teachers’ (N = 29) ability to specify learning goals of a lesson (Skill 1), collect evidence of student learning (Skill 2), generate hypotheses about the effect of teaching on student learning (Skill 3), and use the analysis to propose alternative teaching strategies to improve the lesson (Skill 4; Hiebert et al., 2007). I examined the effect of direct instruction on Skill 1 on the development of the other three skills. Also, the study examined the nature of specifying learning goals (Skill 1) following instruction that did and did not address this skill. A two-group pretest-posttest experimental design was used to compare the effect of two conditions (Students Learning and Learning Goals) on skill development. Both conditions received classroom instruction on Skills 2, 3, and 4, but only the Learning Goals condition received instruction on Skill 1. The instruction included skill-based instruction and video analysis using an observation framework that was designed by the participants in the study. Four topics related to the development of children’s algebraic reasoning were used for instruction, practice, and assessment of all four skills. A subsample of preservice teachers from both conditions (n = 8) were individually interviewed to examine the nature of Skill 1. The results revealed significant improvement on Skills 2, 3, and 4 following instruction, however the instruction provided to each groups had the same effect on the development of these three skills. The results demonstrated no difference on mean Skill 1 performance on the post-assessment. The interview data revealed qualitative differences in the nature of Skill 1. Specifically, compared to the preservice teachers in the Learning Goals group, those without Skill 1 training (Student Learning group) showed a greater tendency to focus on students’ behaviors to identify learning goals, and this limited their ability to specify learning goals across different teaching contexts. Overall, the results indicated that Skills 2, 3, and 4 do not develop naturally and are learned. As such, the results lend support for teacher training programs to incorporate instruction on these three skills

    An examination of the type of instruction that facilitates preservice teachers' development of specialized content knowledge of division with fractions

    Ball, Hill, and Bass (2005) proposed that facilitating the development of preservice teachers' specialized content knowledge (SCK) warrants investigation. Specialized content knowledge is mathematical knowledge that is used to teach mathematics and should thus be uniquely understood by teachers. Moreover, the type of mathematics content knowledge (i.e., conceptual and procedural) that would enhance preservice teachers' SCK is not well understood. In line with Ball et al., objectives of the present study were to (a) examine whether content-focused instruction addressing division with fractions would enhance preservice teachers' SCK of this topic and (b) examine the impact of instructional content (i.e., conceptual content, and a combination of conceptual and procedural content) on preservice teachers' gains in SCK of division with fractions (SCK-DF). Eight preservice teachers were assigned to one of two treatment conditions (i.e., conceptual content, and a combination of conceptual and procedural content) and their development of SCK-DF was measured using semi-structured pre- and post-interviews. The interview data were coded using the Analysis of Specialized Content Knowledge of Division with Fractions rubric, developed by the researcher. In general, the results supported the hypothesis that (a) participants' overall SCK-DF was enhanced after instruction and (b) the participants who received the combination of conceptual and procedural instructional content demonstrated greater gains in their development in SCK-DF.
