A Cluster of Compact Radio Sources in W40
We present deep 3.6 cm radio continuum observations of the HII region W40
obtained using the Very Large Array in its A and B configurations. We detect a
total of 20 compact radio sources in a region of 4 x 4 arcmin, with 11 of them
concentrated in a band with 30 arcsec of extent. We also present JHK photometry
of the W40 cluster taken with the QUIRC instrument on the University of Hawaii
2.2 meter telescope. These data reveal that 15 of the 20 VLA sources have
infrared counterparts, and 10 show radio variability with periods less than 20
days. Based on these combined radio and IR data, we propose that 8 of the radio
sources are candidate ultracompact HII regions, 7 are likely to be young
stellar objects, and 2 may be shocked interstellar gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 10 pages, 4

Reducible valgus flat-foot: Assessment of posterior subtalar joint surface displacement by posterior arthroscopy during sinus tarsi expansion screwing
AbstractIntroductionSubtalar arthroereisis corrects childhood and adult reducible valgus flat-foot in certain indications. Inserting an expansion screw in the sinus tarsi simultaneously corrects the calcaneal valgus of the talocalcaneal divergence and first-ray pronation if these are reducible. The displacement induced in the posterior subtalar joint (decoaptation, translation, rotation) is, however, poorly known. The present study involved arthroscopic assessment of posterior subtalar joint surface displacement during insertion of a talocalcaneal arthroereisis screw, with the hypothesis that displacement varies in three dimensions according to screw size.Material and methodEight specimens were used for the study. All ankles were supple, taken from adult subjects. A 4.5-mm arthroscope was used and measurements were taken with a graduated palpator in the posterior subtalar joint. Three sinus tarsi expansion screws of incremental diameter were assessed. Before and after insertion measurements were made of posterolateral and posteromedial talar exposure on the calcaneus, anteroposterior and lateromedial translation, and talocalcaneal joint-line opening.ResultsMedial rotation, varization and anterior translation of the calcaneus were comparable in all cases. Mean lateral opening of the posterior subtalar joint was 0.88mm with 8-mm screws and 1.25mm with 16-mm screws. Significant differences between 8 and 16mm screws were found for lateral subtalar joint opening (P=0.028) and for lateromedial translation (P=0.004).ConclusionSinus tarsi expansion screwing corrects hindfoot valgus and talocalcaneal divergence by inducing medial translation of the calcaneus under the talus and talar medial rotation and varization, proportional to screw size (medial translation and lateral opening of the subtalar joint).Level of evidenceIII
Temperature dependence of polarization relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots
The decay time of the linear polarization degree of the luminescence in
strongly confined semiconductor quantum dots with asymmetrical shape is
calculated in the frame of second-order quasielastic interaction between
quantum dot charge carriers and LO phonons. The phonon bottleneck does not
prevent significantly the relaxation processes and the calculated decay times
can be of the order of a few tens picoseconds at temperature K,
consistent with recent experiments by Paillard et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.

Allosterically Tunable, DNA-Based Switches Triggered by Heavy Metals
Here we demonstrate the rational design of allosterically controllable, metal-ion-triggered molecular switches. Specifically, we designed DNA sequences that adopt two low energy conformations, one of which does not bind to the target ion and the other of which contains mismatch sites serving as specific recognition elements for mercury(II) or silver(I) ions. Both switches contain multiple metal binding sites and thus exhibit homotropic allosteric (cooperative) responses. As heterotropic allosteric effectors we employ single-stranded DNA sequences that either stabilize or destabilize the nonbinding state, enabling dynamic range tuning over several orders of magnitude. The ability to rationally introduce these effects into target-responsive switches could be of value in improving the functionality of DNA-based nanomachines
Exciton-LO-phonon dynamics in InAs/GaAs quantum dots: Effects of zone-edge phonon damping
The dynamics of an exciton-LO-phonon system after an ultrafast optical
excitation in an InAs/GaAs quantum dot is studied theoretically. Influence of
anharmonic phonon damping and its interplay with the phonon dispersion is
analyzed. The signatures of the zone-edge decay process in the absorption
spectrum and time evolution are highlighted, providing a possible way of
experimental investigation on phonon anharmonicity effects.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Nonequilibrium Electron Interactions in Metal Films
Ultrafast relaxation dynamics of an athermal electron distribution is
investigated in silver films using a femtosecond pump-probe technique with 18
fs pulses in off-resonant conditions. The results yield evidence for an
increase with time of the electron-gas energy loss rate to the lattice and of
the free electron damping during the early stages of the electron-gas
thermalization. These effects are attributed to transient alterations of the
electron average scattering processes due to the athermal nature of the
electron gas, in agreement with numerical simulations
