Graph Annotations in Modeling Complex Network Topologies
The coarsest approximation of the structure of a complex network, such as the
Internet, is a simple undirected unweighted graph. This approximation, however,
loses too much detail. In reality, objects represented by vertices and edges in
such a graph possess some non-trivial internal structure that varies across and
differentiates among distinct types of links or nodes. In this work, we
abstract such additional information as network annotations. We introduce a
network topology modeling framework that treats annotations as an extended
correlation profile of a network. Assuming we have this profile measured for a
given network, we present an algorithm to rescale it in order to construct
networks of varying size that still reproduce the original measured annotation
profile.
Using this methodology, we accurately capture the network properties
essential for realistic simulations of network applications and protocols, or
any other simulations involving complex network topologies, including modeling
and simulation of network evolution. We apply our approach to the Autonomous
System (AS) topology of the Internet annotated with business relationships
between ASs. This topology captures the large-scale structure of the Internet.
In depth understanding of this structure and tools to model it are cornerstones
of research on future Internet architectures and designs. We find that our
techniques are able to accurately capture the structure of annotation
correlations within this topology, thus reproducing a number of its important
properties in synthetically-generated random graphs
Inverse association between cigarette and water pipe smoking and hypertension in an elderly population in Iran: Bushehr elderly health programme.
The collected data in Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) Program which had detailed the data on participants' smoking status and habits, was analysed to investigate the association between smoking of both water pipes and cigarettes and hypertension in an elderly population. Three thousand elderly men and women who participated in the baseline assessment of the BEH Program-a prospective population-based study being conducted in Bushehr, Iran-were selected randomly through a multistage, stratified cluster sampling method. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured twice using a mercury sphygmomanometer, and researchers asked participants about medical history of hypertension as well as history of cigarette and water pipe smoking. Researchers used binary logistic regression models to assess the association of hypertension and smoking, and found an inverse, statistically significant association between current smoking and hypertension (odds ratio (OR)=0.50 (95% confidence interval (CI)=0.41, 0.60)). The association remained statistically significant after controlling for age, education and body mass index (OR=0.54 (95% CI=0.45, 0.66)). Findings were consistent for cigarette and water pipe smoking by sex (all ORs were inverse and statistically significant). Both cigarette and water pipe smoking were associated with reduced hypertension among older people, but the strength of association was different between men and women and also between cigarette and water pipe smoking. The reasons behind the association as well as the differences observed need to be investigated through more comprehensive, longitudinal studies
Using Random Subsets to Build Scalable Network Services
In this paper, we argue that a broad range of large-scale network services would benefit from a scalable mechanism for delivering state about a random subset of global participants. Key to this approach is ensuring that membership in the subset changes periodically and with uniform representation over all participants. Random subsets could help overcome inherent scaling limitations to services that maintain global state and perform global network probing. It could further improve the routing performance of peer-to-peer distributed hash tables by locating topologically-close nodes. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of RanSub, a scalable protocol for delivering such state. As a first demonstration of the RanSub utility, we construct SARO, a scalable and adaptive application-layer overlay tree. SARO uses RanSub state information tolocate appropriate peers for meeting application-specific delay and bandwidth targets and to dynamically adapt to changing network conditions. A large-scale evaluation of 1000 overlay nodes participating in an emulated 20,000- node wide-area network topology demonstrate both the adaptivity and scalability (in terms of per-node state and network overhead) of both RanSub and SARO. Finally, we use an existing streaming media server to distribute content through SARO running on top of the PlanetLab Internet testbed
Score-based Diffusion Models in Function Space
Diffusion models have recently emerged as a powerful framework for generative
modeling. They consist of a forward process that perturbs input data with
Gaussian white noise and a reverse process that learns a score function to
generate samples by denoising. Despite their tremendous success, they are
mostly formulated on finite-dimensional spaces, e.g. Euclidean, limiting their
applications to many domains where the data has a functional form such as in
scientific computing and 3D geometric data analysis. In this work, we introduce
a mathematically rigorous framework called Denoising Diffusion Operators (DDOs)
for training diffusion models in function space. In DDOs, the forward process
perturbs input functions gradually using a Gaussian process. The generative
process is formulated by integrating a function-valued Langevin dynamic. Our
approach requires an appropriate notion of the score for the perturbed data
distribution, which we obtain by generalizing denoising score matching to
function spaces that can be infinite-dimensional. We show that the
corresponding discretized algorithm generates accurate samples at a fixed cost
that is independent of the data resolution. We theoretically and numerically
verify the applicability of our approach on a set of problems, including
generating solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation viewed as the push-forward
distribution of forcings from a Gaussian Random Field (GRF).Comment: 26 pages, 7 figure
Conservative management of ovarian fibroma in a case of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome comorbid with endometriosis
Ovarian fibromas are the most common benign solid ovarian tumors, which are often difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Ovarian fibromas, especially in bilateral cases, may be cases of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS), a rare autosomal dominant disorder with predisposition to basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and other various benign and malignant tumors. This case report describes a 25 year-old female with GGS, bilateral ovarian fibroma, endometriosis and septated uterus, which was referred to the Gynecology Clinic of Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital in October 2016. This patient had facial asymmetry due to recurrent odontogenic keratocysts. In young cases of ovarian fibromas as reported here, conservative surgical management can preserve ovarian function and fertility. Social Internet of Things and New Generation Computing -- A Survey
Social Internet of Things (SIoT) tries to overcome the challenges of Internet
of Things (IoT) such as scalability, trust and discovery of resources, by
inspiration from social computing. This survey aims to investigate the research
done on SIoT from two perspectives including application domain and the
integration to the new computing models. For this, a two-dimensional framework
is proposed and the projects are investigated, accordingly. The first dimension
considers and classifies available research from the application domain
perspective and the second dimension performs the same from the integration to
new computing models standpoint. The aim is to technically describe SIoT, to
classify related research, to foster the dissemination of state-of-the-art, and

Identifying youth-friendly service practices associated with adolescents’ use of reproductive healthcare services in post-conflict Burundi: a cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Very little is known about reproductive health service (RHS) availability and adolescents’ use of these services in post-conflict settings. Such information is crucial for targeted community interventions that aim to improve quality delivery of RHS and outcomes in post-conflict settings. The objectives of this study therefore was to examine the density of RHS availability; assess spatial patterns of RHC facilities; and identify youth-friendly practices associated with adolescents’ use of services in post-conflict Burundi. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from a full census of all facilities (n = 892) and provider interviews in Burundi. Surveyed facilities included all public, private, religious and community association owned-centers and hospitals. At each facility efforts were made to interview the officer-in-charge and a group of his/her staff. We applied both geospatial and non-spatial analyses, to examine the density of RHS availability and density, and to explore the association between youth-friendly practices and adolescents’ use of RHS in post-conflict Burundi. RESULTS: High spatial patterning of distances of RHC facilities was observed, with facilities clustered predominantly in districts exhibiting persistent violence. But, use of services remained undeterred. We further found a stronger association between use of RHS and facility and programming characteristics. Community outreach, designated check-in/exam rooms, educational materials (posters, print, and pictures) in waiting rooms, privacy and confidentiality were significantly associated with adolescents’ use of RHS across all facility types. Cost was associated with use only at religious facilities and youth involvement at private facilities. No significant association was found between provider characteristics and use of RHS at any facility. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate the need to improve youth-friendly service practices in the provision of RHS to adolescents in Burundi and suggest that current approaches to provider training may not be adequate for improving these vital practices. Our mixed methods approach and results are generalizable to other countries and post-conflict settings. In post-conflict settings, the methods can be used to identify service availability and spatial patterns of RHC facilities to plan for targeted service interventions, to increase demand and uptake of services by youth and young adults
Novel therapies in breast cancer: what is new from ASCO 2008
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Breast cancer is the most common female cancer and the second most common cause of female cancer-related deaths in the United States. World-wide, more than one million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually. In 2007, more than 175,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. However, deaths due to breast cancer have decreased in the recent years in part because of improved screening techniques, surgical interventions, understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease, and utilization of traditional chemotherapies in a more efficacious manner. One of the more exciting areas of improvement in the treatment of breast cancer is the entrance of novel therapies now available to oncologists. In the field of cancer therapeutics, the area of targeted and biologic therapies has been progressing at a rapid rate, particularly in the treatment of breast cancer.</p> <p>Since the advent of imatinib for the successful treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia in the 2001, clinicians have been searching for comparable therapies that could be as efficacious and as tolerable. In order for targeted therapies to be effective, the agent must be able to inhibit critical regulatory pathways which promote tumor cell growth and proliferation. The targets must be identifiable, quantifiable and capable of being interrupted.</p> <p>In the field of breast cancer, two advances in targeted therapy have led to great strides in the understanding and treatment of breast cancer, namely hormonal therapy for estrogen positive receptor breast cancer and antibodies directed towards the inhibition of human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)2. These advances have revolutionized the understanding and the treatment strategies for breast cancer. Building upon these successes, a host of novel agents are currently being investigated and used in clinical trials that will hopefully prove to be as fruitful. This review will focus on novel therapies in the field of breast cancer with a focus on metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and updates from the recent annual ASCO meeting and contains a summary of the results.</p
