Terminal Ileum Perforation as a Consequence of a Migrated and Fractured Oesophageal Stent
Covered self-expanding metallic stents are commonly employed to relieve malignant oesophageal obstruction. We report a case of a patient with oesophageal cancer treated by stent insertion and curative chemoradiotherapy with subsequent stent migration to the stomach. The stent fractured with the distal fragment migrating as far as the terminal ileum where it caused perforation of the bowel
Shapes of the Proton
A model proton wave function, constructed using Poincare invariance, and
constrained by recent electromagnetic form factor data, is used to study the
shape of the proton. Spin-dependent quark densities are defined as matrix
elements of density operators in proton states of definite spin-polarization,
and shown to have an infinite variety of non-spherical shapes. For high
momentum quarks with spin parallel to that of the proton, the shape resembles
that of a peanut, but for quarks with anti-parallel spin the shape is that of a
bagel.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. C This corrects a

Parity Mixed Doublets in A = 36 Nuclei
The -circular polarizations () and asymmetries
() of the parity forbidden M1 + E2 -decays: MeV) and MeV)
MeV) are investigated theoretically. We use the recently proposed
Warburton-Becker-Brown shell-model interaction. For the weak forces we discuss
comparatively different weak interaction models based on different assumptions
for evaluating the weak meson-hadron coupling constants. The results determine
a range of values from which we find the most probable values:

and couplings in QCD
We calculate the and couplings using QCD sum rules on the
light-cone. In this approach, the large-distance dynamics is incorporated in a
set of pion wave functions. We take into account two-particle and
three-particle wave functions of twist 2, 3 and 4. The resulting values of the
coupling constants are and .
From this we predict the partial width \Gamma (D^{*+} \ra D^0 \pi^+ )=32 \pm
5~ keV . We also discuss the soft-pion limit of the sum rules which is
equivalent to the external axial field approach employed in earlier
calculations. Furthermore, using and the pole
dominance model for the B \ra \pi and D\ra \pi semileptonic form factors
is compared with the direct calculation of these form factors in the same
framework of light-cone sum rules.Comment: 27 pages (LATEX) +3 figures enclosed as .uu file MPI-PhT/94-62 ,

Irreducible Multiplets of Three-Quark Operators on the Lattice: Controlling Mixing under Renormalization
High luminosity accelerators have greatly increased the interest in
semi-exclusive and exclusive reactions involving nucleons. The relevant
theoretical information is contained in the nucleon wavefunction and can be
parametrized by moments of the nucleon distribution amplitudes, which in turn
are linked to matrix elements of three-quark operators. These can be calculated
from first principles in lattice QCD. However, on the lattice the problems of
operator mixing under renormalization are rather involved. In a systematic
approach we investigate this issue in depth. Using the spinorial symmetry group
of the hypercubic lattice we derive irreducibly transforming three-quark
operators, which allow us to control the mixing pattern.Comment: 13 page
Combinatorial Alexander Duality -- a Short and Elementary Proof
Let X be a simplicial complex with the ground set V. Define its Alexander
dual as a simplicial complex X* = {A \subset V: V \setminus A \notin X}. The
combinatorial Alexander duality states that the i-th reduced homology group of
X is isomorphic to the (|V|-i-3)-th reduced cohomology group of X* (over a
given commutative ring R). We give a self-contained proof.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure; v3: the sign function was simplifie
Charge-Symmetry Violation in Pion Scattering from Three-Body Nuclei
We discuss the experimental and theoretical status of charge-symmetry
violation (CSV) in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on 3H and 3He.
Analysis of the experimental data for the ratios r1, r2, and R at Tpi = 142,
180, 220, and 256 MeV provides evidence for the presence of CSV. We describe
pion scattering from the three-nucleon system in terms of single- and
double-scattering amplitudes. External and internal Coulomb interactions as
well as the Delta-mass splitting are taken into account as sources of CSV.
Reasonable agreement between our theoretical calculations and the experimental
data is obtained for Tpi = 180, 220, and 256 MeV. For these energies, it is
found that the Delta-mass splitting and the internal Coulomb interaction are
the most important contributions for CSV in the three-nucleon system. The CSV
effects are rather sensitive to the choice of pion-nuclear scattering
mechanisms, but at the same time, our theoretical predictions are much less
sensitive to the choice of the nuclear wave function. It is found, however,
that data for r2 and R at Tpi = 142 MeV do not agree with the predictions of
our model, which may indicate that there are additional mechanisms for CSV
which are important only at lower energies.Comment: 26 pages of RevTeX, 16 postscript figure
Electric field and exciton structure in CdSe nanocrystals
Quantum Stark effect in semiconductor nanocrystals is theoretically
investigated, using the effective mass formalism within a
Baldereschi-Lipari Hamiltonian model for the hole states. General expressions
are reported for the hole eigenfunctions at zero electric field. Electron and
hole single particle energies as functions of the electric field
() are reported. Stark shift and binding energy of the
excitonic levels are obtained by full diagonalization of the correlated
electron-hole Hamiltonian in presence of the external field. Particularly, the
structure of the lower excitonic states and their symmetry properties in CdSe
nanocrystals are studied. It is found that the dependence of the exciton
binding energy upon the applied field is strongly reduced for small quantum dot
radius. Optical selection rules for absorption and luminescence are obtained.
The electric-field induced quenching of the optical spectra as a function of
is studied in terms of the exciton dipole matrix element. It
is predicted that photoluminescence spectra present anomalous field dependence
of the emission lines. These results agree in magnitude with experimental
observation and with the main features of photoluminescence experiments in
nanostructures.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
Evidence for Color Fluctuations in Hadrons from Coherent Nuclear Diffraction}
A QCD-based treatment of projectile size fluctuations is used to compute
inelastic diffractive cross sections for coherent
hadron-nuclear processes. We find that fluctuations near the average size give
the major contribution to the cross section with contribution
from small size configurations.
The computed values of are consistent with the limited
available data. The importance of coherent diffraction studies for a wide range
of projectiles for high energy Fermilab fixed target experiments is emphasized.
The implications of these significant color fluctuations for relativistic heavy
ion collisions are discussed.Comment: Report number DOE/ER 40427-13-N93 11 pages, 3 figures available from

Modulational instability in nonlocal nonlinear Kerr media
We study modulational instability (MI) of plane waves in nonlocal nonlinear
Kerr media. For a focusing nonlinearity we show that, although the nonlocality
tends to suppress MI, it can never remove it completely, irrespectively of the
particular profile of the nonlocal response function. For a defocusing
nonlinearity the stability properties depend sensitively on the response
function profile: for a smooth profile (e.g., a Gaussian) plane waves are
always stable, but MI may occur for a rectangular response. We also find that
the reduced model for a weak nonlocality predicts MI in defocusing media for
arbitrary response profiles, as long as the intensity exceeds a certain
critical value. However, it appears that this regime of MI is beyond the
validity of the reduced model, if it is to represent the weakly nonlocal limit
of a general nonlocal nonlinearity, as in optics and the theory of
Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
