The Brimbank atlas of health and education

Presents a detailed regional profile of the City of Brimbank, covering a range of health, education and other social and demographic characteristics. Overview This atlas, prepared by the Public Health Information Development Unit at The University of Adelaide for the Mitchell Institute, provides a range of information for decision-makers, planners, service providers, researchers and communities. It is hoped its production will bring a better understanding of the complex interactions between individuals and families, their environments and social structures over a lifetime, and how these factors influence the health, education and ultimately, the flourishing of current and future generations of Brimbank residents. In order to do this, a number of indicators have been chosen to describe different aspects of the population, and, by using them, to highlight differences, especially in health and education outcomes, across the community. The indicators have also been selected to cover the lifespan and offers a perspective on understanding inequalities across life and tracing outcomes at one stage of life, to the accumulation of experiences which occurred at earlier stages

The National Year of Reading: celebrating the role of literature in an academic culture

2012, the National Year of Reading (NYR), was celebrated in libraries, schools and community centres throughout Australia. At the University of Adelaide, we celebrated our academic culture of literary teaching and research with a range of programmes and initiatives based in the humanities faculty. The Barr Smith Library played an integral part in supporting the University's literary culture with our collections, services and expertise. This paper describes my role as an embedded librarian in the humanities, and the different areas of professional practice that I employed for NYR in 2012: collection development and promotion; teaching; collaboration with academic colleagues; the use of new educational technologies and social media. It provides an insight into some of the current trends and future opportunities that are shaping the role of the subject librarian in academic libraries.Jennifer Osbor

Response Validity and Writing : A Qualitative Investigation of an International Test of English

    Get PDF
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the major \u27gate-keeping\u27 tests required for entry by students from overseas into universities in the UK, Australia. New Zealand and Canada. This paper reports on a qualitative investigation into the response validity of the IELTS writing subtest. The aim of the study was to identify factors in the assessment context which might influence candidates\u27 achievement in writing their responses. The first part of the study looks at the readability of selected test prompts and identifies discourse and pragmatic features which may affect candidates\u27 interpretation of the prompts. The second part of the investigation describes and analyses test taking behaviours of intending test candidates on the writing subtest. The analysis in this section is based on researchers\u27 observation of subjects, on verbal protocols recorded as subjects wrote responses, and on post-test interview data recorded with the same subjects. The analysis for readability suggests that candidates\u27 interpretation of the test prompts is influenced by factors such as the purpose described for the tasks and the lexico-grammar of the tasks. The analysis of the test-taking behaviours of subjects points to socio-cultural influences on candidates\u27 demonstration of their writing ability. The investigation suggests the usefulness of qualitative procedures such as verbal protocols for exploring response validity, and has implications both for item writers and for teachers preparing candidates for IELTS examinations
