Breakdown of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation for the A = 20 and 21 Multiplets
Using the Penning trap mass spectrometer TITAN, we performed the first direct
mass measurements of 20,21Mg, isotopes that are the most proton-rich members of
the A = 20 and A = 21 isospin multiplets. These measurements were possible
through the use of a unique ion-guide laser ion source, a development that
suppressed isobaric contamination by six orders of magnitude. Compared to the
latest atomic mass evaluation, we find that the mass of 21Mg is in good
agreement but that the mass of 20Mg deviates by 3{\sigma}. These measurements
reduce the uncertainties in the masses of 20,21Mg by 15 and 22 times,
respectively, resulting in a significant departure from the expected behavior
of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in both the A = 20 and A = 21
multiplets. This presents a challenge to shell model calculations using either
the isospin non-conserving USDA/B Hamiltonians or isospin non-conserving
interactions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon forces.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Precision mass measurements of magnesium isotopes and implications on the validity of the Isobaric Mass Multiplet Equation
If the mass excess of neutron-deficient nuclei and their neutron-rich mirror
partners are both known, it can be shown that deviations of the Isobaric Mass
Multiplet Equation (IMME) in the form of a cubic term can be probed. Such a
cubic term was probed by using the atomic mass of neutron-rich magnesium
isotopes measured using the TITAN Penning trap and the recently measured
proton-separation energies of Cl and Ar. The atomic mass of
Mg was found to be within 1.6 of the value stated in the Atomic
Mass Evaluation. The atomic masses of Mg were measured to be both
within 1, while being 8 and 34 times more precise, respectively. Using
the Mg mass excess and previous measurements of Cl we uncovered a
cubic coefficient of = 28(7) keV, which is the largest known cubic
coefficient of the IMME. This departure, however, could also be caused by
experimental data with unknown systematic errors. Hence there is a need to
confirm the mass excess of S and the one-neutron separation energy of
Cl, which have both come from a single measurement. Finally, our results
were compared to ab initio calculations from the valence-space in-medium
similarity renormalization group, resulting in a good agreement.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Ion Acceleration by Flux Transfer Events in the Terrestrial Magnetosheath
We report ion acceleration by flux transfer events in the terrestrial magnetosheath in a global two-dimensional hybrid-Vlasov polar plane simulation of Earth's solar wind interaction. In the model we find that propagating flux transfer events created in magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause drive fast-mode bow waves in the magnetosheath, which accelerate ions in the shocked solar wind flow. The acceleration at the bow waves is caused by a shock drift-like acceleration process under stationary solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field upstream conditions. Thus, the energization is not externally driven but results from plasma dynamics within the magnetosheath. Energetic proton populations reach the energy of 30 keV, and their velocity distributions resemble time-energy dispersive ion injections observed by the Cluster spacecraft in the magnetosheath.Peer reviewe
The effect of hexose ratios on metabolite production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains obtained from the spontaneous fermentation of mezcal
Mezcal from Tamaulipas (Me´xico) is produced by spontaneous alcoholic fermentation using Agave spp. musts, which are rich in fructose. In this study eight Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolates obtained at the final stage of fermentation from a traditional mezcal winery were analysed in three semisynthetic media. Medium M1 had a sugar content of 100 g l-1 and a glucose/fructose (G/F) of 9:1. Medium M2 had a sugar content of 100 g l-1 and a G/F of 1:9. Medium M3 had a sugar content of 200 g l-1 and a G/F of 1:1. In the three types of media tested, the highest ethanol yield was obtained from the glucophilic strain LCBG-3Y5, while strain LCBG-3Y8 was highly resistant to ethanol and the most fructophilic of the mezcal strains. Strain LCBG-3Y5 produced more glycerol (4.4 g l-1) and acetic acid (1 g l-1) in M2 than in M1 (1.7 and 0.5 g l-1, respectively), and the ethanol yields were higher for all strains in M1 except for LCBG-3Y5, -3Y8 and the Fermichamp strain. In medium M3, only the Fermichamp strain was able to fully consume the 100 g of fructose l-1 but left a residual 32 g of glucose l-1.
Regarding the hexose transporters, a high number of amino acid polymorphisms were found in the Hxt1p sequences. Strain LCBG-3Y8 exhibited eight unique amino acid changes, followed by the Fermichamp strain with three changes. In Hxt3p, we observed nine amino acid polymorphisms unique for the Fermichamp strain and five unique changes for the mezcal strains
Cerebrospinal fluid findings in patients with neurological manifestations in post-COVID-19 syndrome
BACKGROUND: Information on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings in patients with neurological manifestations in post-COVID-19 syndrome is scarce. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of 84 CSF samples in patients fulfilling post-COVID-19 criteria in two neurological post-COVID-19 outpatient clinics. RESULTS: In 68% of samples, all CSF parameters were normal. The most frequent pathological CSF finding was elevation of total protein (median total protein 33.3 mg/dl [total range 18.5-116.2]) in 20 of 83 (24%) samples. The second most prevalent pathological finding was a blood-CSF barrier dysfunction as measured by elevation of QAlb (median QAlb 4.65 [2.4-13.2]) in 11/84 (13%). Pleocytosis was found in only 5/84 (6%) samples and was mild in all of them. CSF-restricted oligoclonal bands were found in 5/83 (6%) samples. Anti-neuronal autoantibodies in CSF were negative in most cases, whilst 12/68 (18%) samples were positive for anti-myelin autoantibodies in serum. PCR for herpesviridae (HSV-1/-2, VZV, EBV, CMV, HHV6) showed, if at all, only weakly positive results in CSF or EDTA whole blood/plasma. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of samples did not show any pathologies. The most frequent findings were elevation of total protein and blood-CSF barrier dysfunction with no signs of intrathecal inflammation. CSF analysis still keeps its value for exclusion of differential diagnoses

Induction, expression and characterisation of laccase genes from the marine-derived fungal strains Nigrospora sp. CBMAI 1328 and Arthopyrenia sp. CBMAI 1330
The capability of the fungi Nigrospora sp. CBMAI 1328 and Arthopyrenia sp. CBMAI 1330 isolated from marine sponge to synthesise laccases (Lcc) in the presence of the inducer copper (110 M) was assessed. In a liquid culture medium supplemented with 5 M of copper sulphate after 5 days of incubation, Nigrospora sp. presented the highest Lcc activity (25.2 UL1). The effect of copper on Lcc gene expression was evaluated by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Nigrospora sp. showed the highest gene expression of Lcc under the same conditions of Lcc synthesis. The highest Lcc expression by the Arthopyrenia sp. was detected at 96 h of incubation in absence of copper. Molecular approaches allowed the detection of Lcc isozymes and suggest the presence of at least two undescribed putative genes. Additionally, Lcc sequences from the both fungal strains clustered with other Lcc sequences from other fungi that inhabit marine environments.M.
