Citation Analysis of Publications on the Australian Tariff Debate
Australia went from a highly protected trade regime (in the late 1960s-early 1970s) to a somewhat lower one (in the early 1990s). At the time of the Victorian Willis by-election in April, 1992, the Australian news media claimed that the tariff debate was already won by 'free-traders' and, that the two major political parties were committed to tariff reducing policies. They would 'ultimately levy' an effective rate from zero to 5%. Who were the economists taking part in the debate and what were their contributions? This paper employs citation analysis as a tool to explore and follow the development of the tariff debate during the post-war period. It distinguishes the main participants in the debate and their contributions
The Determinants of American Equity Investment in Australia
The purpose of this paper is to establish the determinants which motivate American equity investment in Australia. Both the literature on general investment theory and American direct investments in Australia have emphasised the importance of the return on income, investment diversification, market size, economic growth and, the negative effect of tariffs. This paper uses regression analysis to examine these concepts and contrast their effects with interest rates on the trend of direct American investment. The findings confirm the importance of diversification and the return on income and investment motives and acknowledges the shift in Australia of American equity investment from manufacturing to the mining and service industry sectors
Aspects of the Japanese Equity Investment in Australia
The purpose of this paper is to establish and correlate the incentives and disincentives that motivated Japanese equity investment to Australia. Japanese investment was primarily to secure procurement of raw materials for the manufacturing industry in Japan. Within this context, the paper explores Kojima's comparative advantage Japanese equity investment theorem. Australian commodity prices and exports to Japan correlated positively with Japanese equity investment, however, the Australian tariff rate and the Australian dollar/yen exchange rate correlated negatively with Japanese equity investment

The Research Output of Australian Econometrics and Economics Department: 1988-93
This paper attempts to measure an important component of the research output of econometrics and economics departments, namely, the number of pages published, during the period 1988-93, in journals listed by the Journal of Economic Literature. Based on standardized page counts it is found that econometrics and economics department rankings are similar over a broad range of journal groupings. It is also found that the median number of pages published by senior lecturers, associate professors is quite small indicating research output is highly concentrated
