    A Rare Presentation of Invasive Aspergillosis: An Asymptomatic Man with an Abscess Localized to a Parietal Pleura

    Aspergillosis is an infection caused by Aspergillus species, and it manifests in various clinical presentations. We describe the case of a 73-year-old man with a small area of thickening on the thoracic wall detected by computed tomography. Surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis of an Aspergillus abscess. We report this case in view of the rarity of Aspergillus abscess localized to a parietal pleura without any signs of lung parenchymal involvement. After a thorough literature review, we consider this could be the first report of this manifestation. Accumulation of similar cases will be necessary to help spread recognition of this condition

    Clonal spread of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli isolates among pups in two kennels

    Although the dog breeding industry is common in many countries, the presence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria among pups in kennels has been infrequently investigated. This study was conducted to better understand the epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli isolates from kennel pups not treated with antimicrobials. We investigated susceptibilities to 11 antimicrobials, and prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) in 86 faecal E. coli isolates from 43 pups in two kennels. Genetic relatedness among all isolates was assessed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Susceptibility tests revealed that 76% of the isolates were resistant to one or more of tested antimicrobials, with resistance to dihydrostreptomycin most frequently encountered (66.3%) followed by ampicillin (60.5%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (41.9%), oxytetracycline (26.7%), and chloramphenicol (26.7%). Multidrug resistance, defined as resistance against two or more classes of antimicrobials, was observed in 52 (60.5%) isolates. Three pups in one kennel harboured SHV-12 ESBL-producing isolates. A comparison between the two kennels showed that frequencies of resistance against seven antimicrobials and the variation in resistant phenotypes differed significantly. Analysis by PFGE revealed that clone sharing rates among pups of the same litters were not significantly different in both kennels (64.0% vs. 88.9%), whereas the rates among pups from different litters were significantly different between the two kennels (72.0% vs. 33.3%, P < 0.05). The pups in the two kennels had antimicrobial-resistant E. coli clones, including multidrug-resistant and ESBL-producing clones. It is likely that resistant and susceptible bacteria can clonally spread among the same and/or different litters thus affecting the resistance prevalence

    Surface Acoustic Wave Single-Electron Interferometry

    We propose an experiment to observe interference of a single electron as it is transported along two parallel quasi-one-dimensional channels trapped in a single minimum of a travelling periodic electric field. The experimental device is a modification of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) based quantum processor. Interference is achieved by creating a superposition of spatial wavefunctions between the two channels and inducing a relative phase shift via either a transverse electric field or a magnetic field. The interference can be used to estimate the decoherence time of an electron in this type of solid-state device

    Thoracoscopic Localization of Small Peripheral Pulmonary Lesions Using Percutaneous Computed Tomography-guided Pleural Dye Marking: A Retrospective Analysis

    Small pulmonary lesions are often difficult to localize during thoracoscopic surgery. We describe a new com-puted tomography (CT)-guided pleural dye-marking method for small peripheral pulmonary lesions that does not involve a visceral pleural puncture. We used this technique for 23 lesions (22 patients) who underwent tho-racoscopic partial lung resection (Nov. 2016-Jan. 2018). With the patient in the lateral decubitus position, pre-operative CT-guided marking on the skin over the lesion was performed. During the surgery, we marked the visceral pleura with a skin marker directly or with an infant-size nutrition catheter with crystal violet at the tip through a venous indwelling needle inserted perpendicular to the skin marking. We localized and resected the lesions in all cases, without complications. The median nodule size measured histopathologically was 8 (4-20) mm overall, and 7 (0-20) mm of the solid part; the median distance from the visceral pleura to the nodule was 9 (1-33) mm. The median operation time was 67 (37-180) min. The median postoperative hospital stay was 3 (3-11) days. Our CT-guided pleural dye-marking method is useful and safe for the localization of small periph-eral pulmonary lesions in thoracoscopic partial lung resections

    Generation and Decay Mechanisms of Ningaloo Nino/Nina

    Using an ocean model, generation and decay mechanisms of warm/cool sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) off Western Australia, or Ningaloo Nino/Nina, are investigated through the calculation of a mixed-layer temperature (MLT) balance taking the mixed-layer depth (MLD) variation into account. Since Ningaloo Nino/Nina develops owing to local air-sea interaction and/or remote forcing, events are classified into two cases based on alongshore wind anomalies and analyzed separately. It is revealed that the anomalous meridional advection associated with the stronger Leeuwin Current and the enhanced warming by the climatological shortwave radiation because of the shallower MLD generate warm SSTAs in the coastal region for both cases of Ningaloo Nino. On the other hand, the latent heat flux damps SSTAs only in a case without northerly alongshore wind anomalies. In the decay, larger sensible heat loss is important. Because of the reduced meridional temperature gradient, the meridional advection eventually damps SSTAs. The sensitivity change to the climatological shortwave radiation owing to MLD anomalies explains offshore MLT tendency anomalies for both cases throughout the events. The mechanisms for Ningaloo Nina are close to a mirror image of Ningaloo Nino but differ in that the latent heat flux damps offshore SSTAs. The seasonal phase-locking nature of Ningaloo Nino/Nina is related to the seasonal variations of MLD and surface heat fluxes, which regulate the amplitude and sign of the sensitivity change to surface heat fluxes. It is also related to the seasonal variations of the Leeuwin Current and meridional temperature gradient through advection anomalies

    Precise measurement of positronium hyperfine splitting using the Zeeman effect

    Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) in bound state. The hyperfine splitting (HFS) of positronium, ΔHFS\Delta_{\mathrm{HFS}}, gives a good test of the bound state calculations and probes new physics beyond the Standard Model. A new method of QED calculations has revealed the discrepancy by 15\,ppm (3.9σ\sigma) of ΔHFS\Delta_{\mathrm{HFS}} between the QED prediction and the experimental average. There would be possibility of new physics or common systematic uncertainties in the previous all experiments. We describe a new experiment to reduce possible systematic uncertainties and will provide an independent check of the discrepancy. We are now taking data and the current result of ΔHFS=203.3951±0.0024(stat.,12ppm)±0.0019(sys.,9.5ppm)GHz\Delta_{\mathrm{HFS}} = 203.395\,1 \pm 0.002\,4 (\mathrm{stat.}, 12\,\mathrm{ppm}) \pm 0.001\,9 (\mathrm{sys.}, 9.5\,\mathrm{ppm})\,\mathrm{GHz} has been obtained so far.     Analysis of mineral apposition rates during alveolar bone regeneration over three weeks following transfer of BMP-2/7 gene via in vivo electroporation

    Alveolar bone is not spontaneously regenerated following trauma or periodontitis. We previously proposed an animal model for new alveolar bone regeneration therapy based on the non-viral BMP-2/7 gene expression vector and in vivo electroporation, which induced the formation of new alveolar bone over the course of a week. Here, we analysed alveolar bone during a period of three weeks following gene transfer to periodontal tissue. Non-viral plasmid vector pCAGGS-BMP-2/7 or pCAGGS control was injected into palatal periodontal tissue of the first molar of the rat maxilla and immediately electroporated with 32 pulses of 50 V for 50 msec. Over the following three weeks, rats were double bone-stained by calcein and tetracycline every three days and mineral apposition rates (MAR) were measured. Double bone-staining revealed that MAR of alveolar bone was as similar level three days before BMP-2/7 gene transfer as three days after gene transfer. However, from 3 to 6 days, 6 to 9 days, 9 to 12 days, 12 to 15 days, 15 to 18 days, and 18 to 20 days after, MARs were significantly higher than prior to gene transfer. Our proposed gene therapy for alveolar bone regeneration combining non-viral BMP-2/7 gene expression vector and in vivo electroporation could increase alveolar bone regeneration potential in the targeted area for up to three weeks

    Post-antibiotic effect of orbifloxacin against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from dogs

    Orbifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone drug used widely in companion animal medicine. In this study, we firstly determined post-antibiotic effects (PAEs) and post-antibiotic sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) effects (PA-SMEs) of orbifloxacin for two strains each of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa from dogs, and these parameters were compared with those of enrofloxacin. At twice the MIC, the PAEs of orbifloxacin ranged from -0.28-0.93 h (mean, 0.29 h) for E. coli and -0.18-1.18 h (mean, 0.37 h) for P. aeruginosa. These parameters were not significantly different for E. coli and shorter for P. aeruginosa, compared to enrofloxacin (P < 0.05). Continued exposure to 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 the MIC of orbifloxacin resulted in average PA-SMEs of 0.55, 1.11, and 2.03 h, respectively, for E. coli, and 1.04, 1.40, and 2.47 h, respectively, for P. aeruginosa. These PA-SMEs, which had no significant differences with those of enrofloxacin, were significantly longer than the corresponding PAEs (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the PA-SME of orbifloxacin for E. coli and P. aeruginosa can be meaningfully prolonged by increase of sub-MICs
