Fracture energy of gels
To clarify effects of crack speed and cross-link density on fracture energy
of acrylamide gels, we evaluated the roughness of the fracture surface and
measured the fracture energy taking into account the roughness. The fracture
energy increases linearly with crack speed in a fast crack speed region,
and the increasing rate of fracture energy with decreases with increasing
cross link density in the gels. In a slow crack speed region the fracture
energy depends on crack speed more strongly than in the fast crack speed
region. This indicates that a qualitative change exists in fracture process of
the gels.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures. Some errors in the first version have been

Bouncing gel balls: impact of soft gels onto rigid surface
After thrown onto a solid substrate, very soft spherical gels bounce
repeatedly. Separate rheological measurements suggest that these balls can be
treated as nearly elastic. The Hertz contact deformation expected in the static
(elastic) limit was observed only at very small impact velocities. For larger
velocities, the gel ball deformed into flattened forms like a pancake. We
measured the size of the gel balls at the maximal deformation and the contact
time as a function of velocities for the samples different in the original
spherical radius and the Young modulus. The experimental results revealed a
number of scaling relations. To interpret these relations, we developed scaling
arguments to propose a physical picture.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (minor revisions, To appear in Europhys. Lett.

A note of Psychological Study on Caregiver's Self-help Group
Research on the relation between relaxation and promotion factors of stresses from home caregiving revealed that the number of years as a member of caregivers group had positive effect against such stresses. In this study, we prepared questionnaires focused on psychological function of caregiver's self-help group. Survey sheets were mailed to 385 caregivers joinning in such groups, and 176 valid answers were collected from February to March, 2000. The average age of caregivers was 64.5 years old, and most of them are spouses and daughters-in-law in 3 to 4 people families. The average period as a member of a group is 4.2 years. They satisfied with the activities, and are willing to be continuing members. One third of them always or often come to the meetings, and they ask public service when they attend. Demand for knowledge and technique on caregiving is high, and the group fulfill most of the demand. The members are also willing to tell information to others
A Note of Psychological Study on Family Care Givers for the Elderly
Load for caregiving is increasing as the number of elderly is increaing and their bedridden period is becoming longer. The load for caregiving should be shared by the entire society, but the fact is that actual load is on domestic caregivers. We carried out a survey on the load for caregiving from January to March, 1999. Questionnaires were delivered and collected from 239 home caregivers who have elderly over 65 years old. The average age of the caregivers were 65.0 years old. Our analyses indicate that the caregivers are exhausted mentaly and physically from the load, but they keep encouraging themselves with resposibility as families
