    Unsupervised MRI Super-Resolution Using Deep External Learning and Guided Residual Dense Network with Multimodal Image Priors

    Deep learning techniques have led to state-of-the-art single image super-resolution (SISR) with natural images. Pairs of high-resolution (HR) and low-resolution (LR) images are used to train the deep learning model (mapping function). These techniques have also been applied to medical image super-resolution (SR). Compared with natural images, medical images have several unique characteristics. First, there are no HR images for training in real clinical applications because of the limitations of imaging systems and clinical requirements. Second, other modal HR images are available (e.g., HR T1-weighted images are available for enhancing LR T2-weighted images). In this paper, we propose an unsupervised SISR technique based on simple prior knowledge of the human anatomy; this technique does not require HR images for training. Furthermore, we present a guided residual dense network, which incorporates a residual dense network with a guided deep convolutional neural network for enhancing the resolution of LR images by referring to different HR images of the same subject. Experiments on a publicly available brain MRI database showed that our proposed method achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Demographics, practice patterns and long-term outcomes of patients with non–ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome in the past two decades: the CREDO-Kyoto Cohort-2 and Cohort-3

    OBJECTIVES: To evaluate patient characteristics and long-term outcomes in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS) in the past two decades. DESIGN: Multicenter retrospective study. SETTING: The Coronary REvascularization Demonstrating Outcome Study in Kyoto (CREDO-Kyoto) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)/coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) Registry Cohort-2 (2005-2007) and Cohort-3 (2011-2013). PARTICIPANTS: 3254 patients with NSTEACS who underwent first coronary revascularisation. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was all-cause death. The secondary outcomes were cardiovascular death, cardiac death, sudden cardiac death, non-cardiovascular death, non-cardiac death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, stroke, hospitalisation for heart failure, major bleeding, any coronary revascularisation and target vessel revascularisation. RESULTS: Patients in Cohort-3 were older and more often had heart failure at admission than those in Cohort-2. The prevalence of PCI, emergency procedure and guideline-directed medical therapy was higher in Cohort-3 than in Cohort-2. In patients who received PCI, the prevalence of transradial approach, drug-eluting stent use and intravascular ultrasound use was higher in Cohort-3 than in Cohort-2. There was no change in 3-year adjusted mortality risk from Cohort-2 to Cohort-3 (HR 1.00, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.22, p=0.97). Patients in Cohort-3 compared with those in Cohort-2 were associated with lower adjusted risks for stroke (HR 0.65, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.92, p=0.02) and any coronary revascularisation (HR 0.76, 95%CI 0.66 to 0.87, p<0.001), but with higher risk for major bleeding (HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.47, p=0.008). The unadjusted risk for definite stent thrombosis was lower in Cohort-3 than in Cohort 2 (HR 0.29, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.67, p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: In the past two decades, we did not find improvement for mortality in patients with NSTEACS. We observed a reduction in the risks for definite stent thrombosis, stroke and any coronary revascularisation, but an increase in the risk for major bleeding

    Percutaneous coronary intervention using new-generation drug-eluting stents versus coronary arterial bypass grafting in stable patients with multi-vessel coronary artery disease: From the CREDO-Kyoto PCI/CABG registry Cohort-3

    AIMS: There is a scarcity of studies comparing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using new-generation drug-eluting stents (DES) with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with multi-vessel coronary artery disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: The CREDO-Kyoto PCI/CABG registry Cohort-3 enrolled 14927 consecutive patients who underwent first coronary revascularization with PCI or isolated CABG between January 2011 and December 2013. The current study population consisted of 2464 patients who underwent multi-vessel coronary revascularization including revascularization of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) either with PCI using new-generation DES (N = 1565), or with CABG (N = 899). Patients in the PCI group were older and more often had severe frailty, but had less complex coronary anatomy, and less complete revascularization than those in the CABG group. Cumulative 5-year incidence of a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction or stroke was not significantly different between the 2 groups (25.0% versus 21.5%, P = 0.15). However, after adjusting confounders, the excess risk of PCI relative to CABG turned to be significant for the composite endpoint (HR 1.27, 95%CI 1.04-1.55, P = 0.02). PCI as compared with CABG was associated with comparable adjusted risk for all-cause death (HR 1.22, 95%CI 0.96-1.55, P = 0.11), and stroke (HR 1.17, 95%CI 0.79-1.73, P = 0.44), but with excess adjusted risk for myocardial infarction (HR 1.58, 95%CI 1.05-2.39, P = 0.03), and any coronary revascularization (HR 2.66, 95%CI 2.06-3.43, P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, PCI with new-generation DES as compared with CABG was associated with excess long-term risk for major cardiovascular events in patients who underwent multi-vessel coronary revascularization including LAD

    Search for gravitational-lensing signatures in the full third observing run of the LIGO-Virgo network

    Gravitational lensing by massive objects along the line of sight to the source causes distortions of gravitational wave-signals; such distortions may reveal information about fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics. In this work, we have extended the search for lensing signatures to all binary black hole events from the third observing run of the LIGO--Virgo network. We search for repeated signals from strong lensing by 1) performing targeted searches for subthreshold signals, 2) calculating the degree of overlap amongst the intrinsic parameters and sky location of pairs of signals, 3) comparing the similarities of the spectrograms amongst pairs of signals, and 4) performing dual-signal Bayesian analysis that takes into account selection effects and astrophysical knowledge. We also search for distortions to the gravitational waveform caused by 1) frequency-independent phase shifts in strongly lensed images, and 2) frequency-dependent modulation of the amplitude and phase due to point masses. None of these searches yields significant evidence for lensing. Finally, we use the non-detection of gravitational-wave lensing to constrain the lensing rate based on the latest merger-rate estimates and the fraction of dark matter composed of compact objects

    Changes in Intervertebral Disc Properties after Intradiscal Injection of Condoliase for Painful Lumbar Disc Herniation

    The detailed changes in disc properties after intradiscal injection of condoliase remain controversial. At 3 and 9 months after administration, radiographic changes in discs were investigated. A total of 41 patients (men, 25; median age, 46 years) who underwent regular follow-up magnetic resonance imaging at 3 and 9 months after administration without additional invasive therapy were retrospectively investigated. The intensity changes of the nucleus pulposus based on the Pfirrmann disc grading system, midsagittal disc height, and maximum protrusion length of herniation were assessed. In addition, disc height changes were compared between 24 patients aged 11 mm had the greatest reduction in disc height than the over 50s group. In conclusion, the clinical outcomes in the over 50s group were comparable to those in the young group after injection of condoliase, whereas young patients with higher disc were more susceptible to disc height reduction

    Growth and characterization of strontium-substituted Ca2Al2SiO7 piezoelectric single crystals

    International audienceWe report the effect of Sr substitution on the structural, electrical, and mechanical properties of Ca2Al2SiO7 (CAS) piezoelectric single crystals for high-temperature pressure sensors. Single crystals of Sr-substituted CAS (Sr-CAS) with a nominal chemical composition of CaSrAl2SiO7 were grown by using the Czochralski technique. The single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that Sr atoms were placed in the Ca decahedral sites, which decreased the polyhedral distortion slightly. The piezoelectric modulus d′31 and electrical resistivity of Sr-CAS measured at 23°C were slightly lower than those of CAS, but still sufficient for the satisfactory performance of the produced sensors. The rupture strength of the Sr-CAS crystal was 230 MPa, 1.2 times higher than that of a CAS crystal. The obtained results suggest that Sr-CAS crystals can be candidate materials for high-temperature pressure sensors

    Size-controlled bimodal in vivo nanoprobes as near-infrared phosphors and positive contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging

    Rare-earth-doped nanoparticles (NPs), such as NaGdF4 nanocrystals doped with light-emitting rare earth ions, are promising bimodal probes that allow the integration of over 1000 nm near- infrared (OTN-NIR; NIR-II/III) fluorescence imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of live bodies. A precise control of the particle size is the key factor for achieving a high signal-to- noise ratio in both NIR fluorescence and MR images and for regulating their function in the body. In this study, size-controlled NaGdF4:Yb3+, Er3+ NPs prepared by stepwise crystal growth were used for in vivo bimodal imaging. Hexagonal NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+ NPs coated with poly (ethylene glycol)-poly(acrylic acid) block copolymer, with hydrodynamic diameters of 15 and 45 nm, were prepared and evaluated as bimodal NPs for OTN-NIR fluorescence imaging and MRI. Their longitudinal (T1) and transverse (T2) relaxation rates at the static magnetic field strength of 1.0 T, as well as their cytotoxicity towards NIH3T3 cell lines, were evaluated and compared to study the effect of size. Using these particles, blood vessel visualization was achieved by MRI, with the highest relaxometric ratio (r1/r2) of 0.79 reported to date for NaGdF4- based nanoprobes (r1 = 19.78 mM−1 s−1), and by OTN-NIR fluorescence imaging. The results clearly demonstrate the potential of the size-controlled PEG-modified NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+ NPs as powerful ‘positive’ T1-weight contrast MRI agents and OTN-NIR fluorophores
