Black brane solutions and their solitonic extremal limit in Einstein-scalar gravity

We investigate static, planar, solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity admitting an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. When the squared mass of the scalar field is positive and the scalar potential can be derived from a superpotential, minimum energy theorems indicate the existence of a scalar soliton. On the other hand, for these models, no-hair theorems forbid the existence of hairy black brane solutions with AdS asymptotics. By considering a specific example (an exact integrable model which has the form of a Toda molecule) and by deriving explicit exact solution, we show that these models allow for hairy black brane solutions with non-AdS domain wall asymptotics, whose extremal limit is a scalar soliton. The soliton smoothly interpolates between a non-AdS domain wall solution at r=∞r=\infty and an AdS solution near r=0r=0.Comment: 5 pages, no figure

Covariant density functional theory: The role of the pion

We investigate the role of the pion in Covariant Density Functional Theory. Starting from conventional Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) theory with a non-linear coupling of the σ\sigma-meson and without exchange terms we add pions with a pseudo-vector coupling to the nucleons in relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. In order to take into account the change of the pion field in the nuclear medium the effective coupling constant of the pion is treated as a free parameter. It is found that the inclusion of the pion to this sort of density functionals does not destroy the overall description of the bulk properties by RMF. On the other hand, the non-central contribution of the pion (tensor coupling) does have effects on single particle energies and on binding energies of certain nuclei.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Exact solutions with AdS asymptotics of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field

We propose a general method for solving exactly the static field equations of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field. Our method starts from an ansatz for the scalar field profile, and determines, together with the metric functions, the corresponding form of the scalar self-interaction potential. Using this method we prove a new no-hair theorem about the existence of hairy black-hole and black-brane solutions and derive broad classes of static solutions with radial symmetry of the theory, which may play an important role in applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to condensed matter and strongly coupled QFTs. These solutions include: 1) four- or generic (d+2)(d+2)-dimensional solutions with planar, spherical or hyperbolic horizon topology; 2) solutions with AdS, domain wall and Lifshitz asymptotics; 3) solutions interpolating between an AdS spacetime in the asymptotic region and a domain wall or conformal Lifshitz spacetime in the near-horizon region.Comment: Some references adde

    IC 4200: a gas-rich early-type galaxy formed via a major merger

We present the result of radio and optical observations of the S0 galaxy IC 4200. We find that the galaxy hosts 8.5 billion solar masses of HI rotating on a ~90 deg warped disk extended out to 60 kpc from the centre of the galaxy. Optical spectroscopy reveals a simple-stellar-population-equivalent age of 1.5 Gyr in the centre of the galaxy and V- and R-band images show stellar shells. Ionised gas is observed within the stellar body and is kinematically decoupled from the stars and characterised by LINER-like line ratios. We interpret these observational results as evidence for a major merger origin of IC 4200, and date the merger back to 1-3 Gyr ago.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; 18 pages, 13 figures; the tables of Appendix C can be downloaded at http://www.astro.rug.nl/~pserra/IC420

Commitment to Sustainability: How Sustainability is Reflected in UAE Universities: An Exploratory Study

    Get PDF
Vision, mission, and value statements are important elements in every organization in communicating the core values and practices the organization follows. In higher education institutions, they play an important role in the road map of the institution and how the institution is engaged with all its stakeholders. The aim of the research is to examine the visibility of information about sustainability on the websites of UAE universities. Universities are important players when it comes to communicating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as they have an important role in societal awareness about sustainable development. To what extent do the mission, vision, and value statements reflect the sustainability of the higher educational institutions that are investigated? The study employs a quantitative content analysis method to explore elements of SDGs by looking for keywords that are associated with the terms ‘sustainable’ or ‘sustainability’ and associated with the 17 SDGs. The sample includes 27 local universities across the UAE. The collected data from universities’ websites are analyzed using AntConc, a software for textual analysis. Only nine universities included a general term for sustainability in their documents. There was a mention of only six SDGs, and SDG9, followed by SDG4, were the most mentioned ones. The performance of the higher educational institutions in sustainability and how these are communicated should be focused strategically. The study will show the way to look at local practices when it comes to SDG communication and be the catalyst for comparative studies that can help establish best practices and guidelines for universities in the region

Public relations for the next generation: Middle East Public Relations Association (MEPRA)\u27s engagement with students

This paper discusses the importance and benefits for students of an outside the classroom learning experience, attending an event presentation and workshop organized as part of a class assignment with the Middle East Public Relations Association (MEPRA) and industry guest speakers. This study showcases MEPRA\u27s outreach attempts to students of public relations and communications, which turned into a learning process for the students where not only was the learning outcome of the course achieved, but also the engagement with the MEPRA empowered the students. Data was obtained from an exploratory questionnaire sent to all students who attended the event. The sample included 75 surveys, of which 57 were deemed usable. The results of the survey indicate that the greatest gain for the students was related to awareness and knowledge (information and cognition) about the subject matter gained from the presentation by industry guest speakers at the event. This paper provides insights into the importance of fostering collaborations between a professional association and students of a federal government university in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). The study suggests that future activities driven by students, the professional association and faculty can contribute to developing professionalism in a growing profession in the UAE, ultimately leading to an effective learning environment. This study also emphasizes the importance of experiential learning in an environment where students come from conservative, close-knit families.

The State and medicine in the governance of health care in Portugal

    Get PDF
According to Newman (2005), the way the state, public and private stakeholders, the health professions and the market connect with each other determines the structure of governance in health care in each particular country. This concept stresses a more complex and diversified set of regulatory mechanisms and practices than those provided by the broad typologies that divide Western health-care systems into national health services (the Beveridge model), social security systems (the Bismarck model) and private health insurance systems (the market model) (see van der Zee & Kroneman 2007 for a synthesis). Countries sharing the same typology may actually reflect different governance arrangements, depending on the threefold articulation between the state, the professions and the market. In some cases, network-based governance has pride of place (the Netherlands or Norway); in others that key position is taken either by the state (the United Kingdom) or health professionals (in which case medicine may stand alone (Germany) or be obliged to negotiate with other health professions (Denmark)) (Burau & Vrangbæk 2008).info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
